Description
Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1930. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Very good/very good. First edition, first printing of Charlie Chan Carries On by Earl Derr Biggers.. Octavo, 334pp. Orange cloth, title in blue on front cover and spine. Top edge dyed blue, now faded. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Slight lean to text block, toned spine and joints, foxing to fore edge, and transference to endpapers. A very good example. In the publisher's dust jacket, $2.00 retail price on front flap, with professional restoration on verso to reinforce closed tears. Light shelf wear, bright spine, vibrantly illustrated cover. (Steinbrunner & Penzler 72) An attractive example. This is the fifth book in a mystery series by Earl Derr Biggers featuring a fictional Honolulu-based police detective named Charlie Chan. Chan was a Chinese-American designed by Biggers to combat the common villainous, Yellow Peril-induced stereotypes of the time.

Description
Brooklyn, New York: The Pearl Press, 375 Pearl Street, 1908. Octavo (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), 87 pages. Advertisements throughout. FIRST EDITION. An attractive community cookbook, from the aptly named Westchester County hamlet of Pleasantville. It's unclear the connection between Pleasantville's St John's Guild and Peg Woffington. Margaret "Peg" Woffington was a popular 18th century English actress, linked romantically to David Garrick. A tea house in Teddington, UK, with a two hundred fifty year history, was established by Woffington, but otherwise the connection seems tenuous. A few small stains on the front board of black and red printed cloth binding, otherwise near fine. Scarce. [OCLC shows four copies].
