Portland, Maine, 1850. Good to very good. Some toning, dust soiling, short tears or nicks. Sewing a little loose. Minor wear.. A fine group of artwork completed by a student for her lessons at Mrs. L.K. Wells' High School for Misses in Portland, Maine (also referred to as the "Park Street Boarding and Day School for Young Ladies", at 36 Park Street). Subjects offered at the school included modern languages, needle work, music, English, and, of course, art and drawing. The student, who identifies herself on some of these pieces as "E. Slater", shows clear improvement over the course of the drawings, going from basic pencil drawings of flowers to complex and finely detailed pastoral landscapes. Also of note is her distinctive style of working with watercolor and gouache that, coupled with what appears to be stenciling, effectively mimics chromolithography in a unique and very beautiful manner in some of the pieces. The student (or perhaps, her teacher's) chosen subjects appear to be largely botanical, tying the artist to a long tradition of women and girls creating herbaria. Interesting to see the clear progression of her artwork, which gains detail, insight, and skill as she practices. The artwork is housed in two albums:[Untitled sketchbook of botanical drawings and paintings by E. Slater. Portland, Maine, c.1850]. Unbound gathering of 16 blank leaves, with approx. eighteen (18) pencil sketches and watercolor/gouache paintings, mainly of botanical subjects (e.g. tiger lily, fruit) and with one very accomplished landscape depicting an Italian (?) villa against mountains and lake. Also includes three (3) scrap pieces of paper with paintings of similar subjects, for a total of twenty-one (21) pieces. Most of the botanicals are labeled in ink or pencil with a lesson number (e.g. "Lesson 2").[Untitled sketchbook of botanical drawings and paintings by E. Slater. Portland, Maine, c.1850]. Blank sketchbook (9" by 13"), approx. ten blank leaves with approx. four (4) inserted scraps/leaves from other sketchbooks, in original marbled wrappers back in black leather. Sketchbook contains approx. six (6) paintings in gouache or watercolor with pencil, with majority of leaves blank. Subjects include still life of fruit, landscapes with pastoral scenery. One particularly nice loose painting attributed in ink to "E. Staten" in lower left-hand corner of Romantic/pastoral European ruins.

TALLULAH BANKHEAD (1902-1968). Tallulah Brockman Bankhead was a stage and film actress, with a brief radio career. She accrued nearly 300 film, stage, television and radio roles during her career. Her family was a notable Alabama family, with her father being the Speaker of the House of Representatives and her grandfather and uncle being senators. Her most famous role was in Alfred Hitchcocks 1944 Lifeboat. In 1972 she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame, being regarded as perhaps the greatest actress this country has ever produced and in 1981 was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame.KATHARINE CORNELL (1893-1974). Katharine Cornell was a stage actress, writer, theater owner, and producer. She is known for her Broadway roles in serious dramas often directed by her husband, Guthrie McClintic, eventually forming C. & M. C. Productions, Inc. together. Her most famous role was as Elizabeth Barret Browning in the 1931 Broadway production of The Barretts of Wimpole Street and as Juliet in the 1935 Romeo and Juliet, being the first performer to receive the Drama League Award in this role.FRANCINE LARRIMORE (1898-1975). Francine Larrimore, born Francine La Remee, was a French-born American screen and stage actress. Her first role was in 1910 at the age of 12 in Where Theres a Will. She was famous for her portrayal of pouty girls and at the height of her career created the role of Roxie Hart in the Broadway premiere of Chicago in 1926.PS. 2 1/2" x 4". c. 1921. New York, New York. A black and white photograph with the signatures Francine Larrimore, Tallulah Bankhead, and Katherine Cornell. This small photo shows the three women in the comedy Nice People. This play was Katherine Cornells debut and was written for Tallulah Bankhead, who the writer, Rachel Crothers, had worked with before. It ran for 120 performances and was included in Burns Mantle's The Best Plays of 1920-1921. Part of Katherine Cornells signature is cut off. This image is in very good condition and laid to a slightly larger red backing.
