Description
New York, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. Very good. Light dust soiling and toning.. A charming trivia game booklet published by Charles Scribner's Sons, advertising a new 1929 edition of their six-volume set "Andrews' History of the United States". Includes several pages of trivia questions, each which can be answered by looking in the set. The last two sets of questions offer corresponding volume and page numbers. Answers are provided for the first three sections, which have questions for children aged 9 to 12, 12 to 15, and 15 to 18. Note the final two sections for adults, which are divided by gender, with vastly different topics: "Questions for Mother" and "Questions for Father". The cover depicts a father reading from the booklet to his son on his knee, surrounded by illustrations of scenes from American history: covered wagons traveling West, Presidents Lincoln and Washington gazing at the viewer, the Pilgrims settling in the New World. Includes a motto at the bottom: "Know America First". Single vol. (9" by 6"), pp. [12], illus. in original illus. wrps. The "Questions for Mother" section contains some particularly interesting insight into contemporary attitudes about race and gender: 4. Who was the first white woman to marry and remain loyal to an Indian? 6. What is the true story about President Andrew Jackson and the beautiful, much slandered widow, Peggy O'Neil? 7. What was the origin of the Ku Klux Klan?
