Description
Boston, Massachusetts: H.W. Huguley Co, 1910. Very good. Letter folds, toning, the occasional spot or nick.. Typewritten circular and advertising ephemera for H.W. Huguley Co. Distillers of Boston, selling whiskey and rum to customers through the mail in the early 1910s before the onset of prohibition in 1920. In total there are eight (8) items, including: a typewritten circular on company letterhead (11" by 8.25"); a blue printed envelope for returning order blanks (3.5" by 6.25"); an unused printed order blank (9" by 6"); and five (5) small printed leaflets marketing different brands sold by the company (largest measuring approx. 6.25" by 3.5"). Harrison Whitfield Huguley (1845-1913) was born in Alexandria Virginia and moved to Boston after the Civil War to begin his mail-order liquor distribution business. He learned the trade from his father, a grocer. By the time this ephemera was published, the company was selling over 30 different brands of liquor, including the popular Myopia Club Whiskey. It is interesting to see how the company marketed the different brands, as evidenced by the advertising ephemera here. For example, Myopia Club Whiskey is shown to have a label that depicts an upper class woman out for a drive, suggesting it as a classy drink.
