Description
Frankfurt: Varrentrapp und Wenner, 1806. FIRST EDITION. With 5 engraved plates (4 duplicates in outline) by G. Rücker and J. C. Eckardt after drawings by C. Köck. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards. A fine uncut copy. First edition of a magnificent anatomical study of the human ear by Soemmerring (1755-1830), one of the most famous anatomists of the early nineteenth century. According to Choulant-Frank, "this work was produced at the request of Professor Lichtenberg of Göttingen, to furnish him greatly enlarged reproductions `for his lectures on physics. Soemmerring, with the aid of Köck, at once undertook the task. Specimens of such enlargements were cast for Göttingen, Bamberg, and Utrecht, but before Soemmerring had a chance to make a cast for himself, the forms, through some accident, were spoiled. After that Soemmerring and Köck, now perfectly familiar with the subject, worked out pictorial representations instead of plastic models . . . they represent the parts in natural size, some very much enlarged, and rank among the most excellent works that have been produced." This work is extremely scarce in the original German. G&M, 1554.

Description
1867. PARIS. Paris Guide par les principaux ecrivains et artistes de la France. Two volumes. I: xiv, 902, 27, [1] pp. II: xiv, 903-2139, [1] pp., illustrated throughout, including many folding plates and maps. Thick 8vo, 190 x 120 mm., bound in publisher's red cloth, gilt armorial at center of front panels, title gilt on spine. Paris: Librairie Internationale, 1867. First edition. One of the most interesting guide books to nineteenth-century Paris with essays on every aspect of the city by leading French writers and artists. In addition to the author of the introduction, Victor Hugo, well-known contributors include: George Sand, Nadar, Alexandre Dumas, Ernest Renan, Sainte-Beuve, Viollet-le-Duc and Ambroise Thomas. The first volume of this comprehensive guide covers art and science, with sections on important libraries, art schools, museums, and palaces, among other institutions and cultural sites. Volume two addresses the practice of everyday life in Paris, ranging from promenades and politics to transportation, prisons, and morgues. Both volumes are illustrated throughout with intricate wood engravings depicting views of historical sites, panoramas, and scenes of city life, with such diverse images as a view of the city taken from the Trocadero to an image of the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. Additionally, each volume includes wonderfully detailed folding maps with an extensive corresponding street index in volume one. At once practical and poetic, this Haussmann-era guide paints a vivid portrait of Paris at the dawn of the modern age. Occasional light foxing, gilt on spine faded, joints tender, but overall an exceptionally well preserved set of this important guide book.

Description
Ann Arbor, Michigan: The Institute of Continuing Legal Education, August 20th-21st, 1970. First Edition. Quarto. 29pp. Bound in a Smead Pressboard Binder. 278pp. printed to rectos only. Clean, strong and bright, internally clean, a very good, solid copy. Essentially all of the relevant literature for a two day course on student protests on US campuses, divided into three sections detailed in the text: "The Campus During Crisis" discussing the roles of the faculty, the legality of police involvement in campus protests, the role of student leaders etc.; "The Campus After Crisis" with particular focus on the Kent State atrocity, the makeup of post demonstration tribunals and hearing committees, and a comparison of student rules regarding protest from the perspective of the campus, and when the "rules" are organized from the perspective of the students (the test case here is contributed by the students of UC Berkeley); and the final part, "The Aftermath of Crisis" which contains an article entitled "Universities and Political Involvement: A Tentative Agenda" alongside sections detailing the Free Speech policies of a number of prominent US universities and colleges, the legality of demonstration at various institutions, and a clear inference that campus authorities regularly break the law and behave unconstitutionally when suppressing students exercising their rights to free speech and assembly on the sites set aside for this purpose. 54 years old at the date of cataloging, this academic and extremely considered and detailed text suggests that nothing changes but it stays the same, and that few democratic rights survive their first encounter with aggressive institutional self interest.
