New York Hurd and Houghton, 1868. 8vo., publisher's pebbled green cloth with a gilt blocked portrait of Carter at work on a drawing, brush between his teeth; repeated in blind on the lower cover. Title and gilt decoration on the spine. First edition of a book about JOHN CARTER'S REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS AS AN ARTIST after an accident that left him completely paralyzed. The work is illustrated with photographs, color plates and facsimile etchings and lithographs of the artist's work in several media.
