Springfield postal cancel [Feb. 23] and addressed in ink to a physician in Mt. Carmel, Wabash County, Illinois. Light wear, Very Good. McConnel of Morgan; B.C. Webster of Sangamon; and Edward Jones of Sangamon. The Committee members recommend scheduling the State Convention on April 24, 1848, for nominating an electoral ticket, delegates to the National Convention, and candidates for State offices. The Sangamon County members were well known to Lincoln. "Outgoing congressman Lincoln recommended to the Taylor administration 'that Abner Y. Ellis be appointed Post-Master at this place, whenever there shall be a vacancy. J. R. Diller, the present incumbent, I can not say has failed in the proper discharge of any of the duties of the office. He, however, has been an active partizan in opposition to us. Located at the Seat of Government of the State, he has been, for part, if not the whole of the time he has held the office, a member of the Democratic State Central Committee'..." Various. No binding. Near Fine. New York: Various, [ca. 1975-2000]. Set of 9 vintage original black-and-white photos, mostly 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm). Eight have photographer credits on verso as either a printed label or in holograph. One has diagonal creasing, overall near fine. Richard Foreman was a major American avant-garde experimental playwright, director and the founder of the Ontological-Hysteric Theater. Though highly original and singular, his work was influenced by Bertolt Brecht, Gertrude Stein, the Living Theatre, Surrealism and Dada. In the writing of his scripts the Dada cut-up technique was used. Foreman often played the central godhead puppet master during his plays as he sat in the center of the audience in the director/engineer's seat from which he controlled the sound effects and other stage craft. He often spoke parts of the script in an omniscient voice through pre-recordings. (Wikipedia) One photo (with Foreman standing with bent knees) is of him at a curtain call. One shows him in front of posters for his 1981 play Café Amerique, Two relate to his 2000 play Bad Boy Nietzsche.

Description
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1900. Map. Color lithograph. Image measures 13 1/2" x 11 1/2" This map depicting the islands of Masbate and Ticao was originally prepared as part of a series made by the Manila Observatory of the Jesuits in 1899. Led by director P. Jose Algue, the Observatory employed only native Philippine draftsmen to complete the technical work required for the project. Upon learning of the Jesuits' undertaking, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey entered into cooperation with the Observatory to produce a comprehensive atlas of the Philippine archipelago. The 30 maps were then brought to the U.S., redrawn slightly with regards to scale and projection, and published by the Survey in 1900 as the "Atlas of the Philippine Islands," the third edition in a series of special publications. This unique combination of American command and a wholly Spaniard or Filipino staff made the Observatory a rare example of cooperation during the period of the Philippine-American War, which continued from 1898 to 1902. Furthermore, the project is significant in its own right given the historic difficulty of mapping the islands, owing in particular to constant disputes between the warring imperial powers of Spain and Portugal. As the superintendent of the Survey describes in the atlas's introduction, the Jesuits spared no pains in securing all available data, and verified them by consultation with members of other religious orders, as well as with old residents, travels, and explorers. The map depicts the islands of Masbate and Ticao, as well as surrounding islands and sand bars. Topography is artistically rendered, and rivers, cities, towns, and lighthouses are labeled. An inset in the upper left shows the Port of Palanog, with depths by soundings. The map is in excellent condition with vibrant color. Small binding holes to upper margin, not affecting the image. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was first established in 1807. After the Civil War, the bureau took responsibility for mapping and conducting geodetic surveys of the the interior of the expanding country. The beautiful quality of this map of the Philippines, particularly with regard to geodetic detail, attests to the fascinating history and hard work that lay behind it.
