New York: Edward K. Clode, 1914 Introduction by John N. Wheeler. First edition, first printing. Original publisher's mustard cloth, spine and front board lettered in dark brown. Good or better with some soiling to cloth, light toning to spine, spine lightly frayed along rear edge, hint of soiling to a few pages, and previous owner’s signature to front free endpaper. Overall, a solid copy of a notoriously scarce and fragile book. Busting 'Em was Ty Cobb's first of three books, which was ghostwritten by John N. Wheeler, who also wrote Christy Mathewson's Pitching in a Pinch. The book focuses on Cobb's reflections of the 1914 season and various events, such as the demolition of Hilltop Park, the Baker spiking, and his contentious relationships with other players and teammates. Cobb is still regarded as the greatest hitter of all-time, with a career MLB record batting average of .366, a Triple Crown, and 12 batting titles, more than any player in history. Falconer’s Appendix appears in its second edition: the first was published as a separate book and was reissued separately. There are numerous references to contemporary chemists (e.g., Brownrigg, Cavendish, Glass, Henry, Macbride, and Priestley)… “Dobson (d. 1784), F.R.S., graduated at Edinburgh and assisted William Cullen in his experiments on the cold produced by evaporation. He successfully treated urinary concretions and abscess of the lungs with carbon dioxide and proved that the sweet taste of diabetic urine was due to glucose, and thus discovered hyperglycaemia [see Garrison-Morton 3928]…On page vii Falconer states that his Appendix has been ‘considerably enlarged’ in this edition.”–Neville, I, p. 373. [nice tight copy, light shelfwear to bottom edges; jacket has a tiny chip at the top of the front panel, an even tinier one at the bottom of the rear panel, some rubbing to the rear panel, slight fading to spine]. SIGNED and DATED (February 1948, the month of publication) by the author on the ffep. The screenwriter-almost-director's second novel, in which a labor agitator stirs up political and racial tensions in a small Southwestern town. A jacket blurb by Humphrey Bogart (who appeared that same year in KEY LARGO, written by Brooks) calls it "the most gripping novel I have read in many years," but the New York Times critic begged to differ, opining that the book was "preachy and melodramatic [and] unsatisfactory as a novel, [but] still quite a good scenario." Brooks made the leap from writer to director just two years later with CRISIS, returning just once more to the novelistic trenches, with "The Producer" (1951), before devoting himself exclusively to the cinema. Colorful reminiscences of the Trail and of the Mother Lode mining camps, 1849-1850, published here for the first time. "Along with Powell and Duval, this ranks as one of the most important (and rare) firsthand accounts describing the Southern Route. Duval and Harris were on the same trip. Harris left Panola County, Texas, on March 25, 1849, and headed for El Paso. From there, he went through Corralitos and Janos in Mexico before picking up the Southern Trail near Guadalupe Pass. He finally joined the Gila Trail at the Pima Villages. Around July 19, his party arrived at Warner's Ranch in San Diego County. After a short visit in Los Angeles with Benito Wilson, they proceeded up the Central Valley and on September 29, terminated their journey. Harris recorded his experiences in the Southern Mines around Agua Fria, Yorktown, and Sullivan's Creek. His account covers hunting bears, claim jumping, fights, lynch law, Mexicans, and gambling.
