Description
Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag, 1912. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST PRINTING IN EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of arguably Thomas Mann's most celebrated work. "At the beginning of 1911, Mann's health was poor and his development sluggish. Nothing he had published since Buddenbrooks had been received with such universal acclaim. He had planned but abandoned several long works, and had published chiefly short stories. Convinced that he needed to make a mark with a new piece that would appeal to current tastes, he poured all his mastery into Death in Venice ... The story was written between July 1911 and July 1912 ... Mann had intended it for S. Fischer's magazine, by that time merely called Die Neue Rundschau, but was uncharacteristically hesitant about submitting it once it was done-it was too innovative and personal. His wife convinced him to send it in. It was first published in the October and November 1912 issues" (S. Appelbaum). The publication in the October and November issues of Die Neue Rundschau preceded the rare limited edition printed by Hans von Weber. In: Die neue Rundschau (October and November issues, 1912; pp. 1368-1398; 1499-1526). Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag, 1912. Octavo, original publisher's printed wrappers; custom box. Minor foxing to text block edges, very light edgewear to wrappers. SCARCE IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS.

Description
(Princeton): original holograph 0. No Binding. Very Good. Holographed version of the two-stanza, 14-line poem "Browning's Lineage" in Van Dyke's hand and signed by him. On notepaper measuring 5" x 8" in black in, signed by Van Dyke (1852 - 1933) at the bottom of the sheet, with the sheet labeled "Dr. Henry van Dyke Princeton NJ February" in a different hand in different pen and ink. The poem differs from the printed version that was published in THE WHITE BEES AND OTHER POEMS (NY: Scribner's, 1909). The last two lines of the first stanza in the published version read: "Through all the world, -- the poets laurel-crowned/ With wreaths from which the autumn takes no toll." In this presumably earlier version, the last two lines read;" In foray through all the world, and around/ With faceless light that shines from pole to pole." We don't know what to make of the note "February" at the top od the page, except to speculate it may be a record of when this version was composed. Small hole in upper part of sheet and some smudges to ink suggesting previous owners wanted to confirm the ink would run.

Description
London, 1858. [Taylor, Alfred Swaine (1806-80).] The Englesham [sic] poisoning case. Galley proofs, with pencil notes and corrections, of an unsigned article published in the Medical Times and Gazette, n.s., 16 (1858): 36-38. [London, 1858.] 2 sheets printed on rectos only, the longer measuring 570 x 156 mm. A few marginal tears (mended with clear tape) affecting one or two lines of text, some creasing, but on the whole very good. Docketed in Taylor's hand. From the archive of Alfred Swaine Taylor, founder of forensic toxicology and the leading medical jurist in England in the mid-nineteenth century. Taylor held the professorship post of medical jurisprudence at Guy's Hospital from 1831 until 1877 and was the author of several books on forensic medicine, including Elements of Medical Jurisprudence (1836; Garrison-Morton.com 1738). He also served as chief editor of the Medical Times and Gazette from 1844 to 1851. "The Englesham poisoning case" discusses the chemical forensic evidence used in the trial of Peter Walker for the murder of Agnes Montgomery, a native of Eaglesham, Scotland, who died on 13 September 1857 after drinking beer that Walker had poisoned with prussic acid. Walker's trial was the first in Scotland for prussic acid poisoning; it resulted in only the third conviction in Britain for murder by this method. The present article is unsigned but is certainly by Taylor; it includes some pointed criticisms of the toxicological arguments used by Walker's defense team. .

Clark: The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd., 2011. x, [11]-487 pp. ISBN-13:9781616190897 ISBN-10:1616190892. Paperback. New. $39.95 * In 1817 David Hoffman published A Course of Legal Study, an ambitious, systematically organized program of readings for aspiring attorneys. It was widely acclaimed upon publication; Joseph Story said it offered "by far the most perfect system for the study of the law which has ever been offered to the public." Hoffman published this book while helping to establish the Law Institute of the newly founded University of Maryland. He expounded the principles of the Course in his lectures. A few were published as pamphlets to promote Hoffman's ideas and attract students. In 1837 he re-published them, along with a few related texts, in a book entitled Introductory Lectures, and Syllabus of a Course of Lectures, Delivered in the University of Maryland. The Law Library of the Library of Congress holds the only known copy. Sleeman returns this rare volume to print and adds an illuminating biographical sketch of Hoffman and a consideration of his library that reprints an auction catalogue of his books prepared for his estate by Henry Wheaton. DAVID HOFFMAN [1784-1854] was a prominent pioneer in the establishment of university-based legal education. He helped to found the University of Maryland Law School in 1816 and was its first professor. His A Course of Legal Study (1817) and Legal Outlines (1829) played a critical role in the development of law school curricula and provided guidance to hundreds of antebellum law students and attorneys. BILL SLEEMAN is the Assistant Director for Technical Services and Special Collections, Supreme Court Library.
