Description
1730. [EMLYN, Sollom; SALMON, Thomas]. A Complete Collection of State-Trials, and Proceedings for High-Treason, and other Crimes and Misdemeanours; from the Reign of King Richard II. To the End of the Reign of King George I. London: J Walthoe et al., 1730-35. Eight volumes. Folio, contemporary full brown sheep rebacked, raised bands, red morocco spine labels. $9000.Second edition, considerably expanded, of this collection of English state trials, giving detailed accounts of some of the most famous and consequential English trials.Sollom Emlyn ""practised successfully as a chamber counsel, and became a commissioner in bankruptcy and in the lead office, but his chief fame was as a writer. In 1730 there appeared in six volumes his A complete collection of state-trials and proceedings for high treason, and other crimes and misdemeanours; from the reign of King Richard II to the end of the reign of King George I. This was the second edition of the collection of state trials first edited by Thomas Salmon from material collected by the printer John Darby the younger, which had appeared in four volumes in 1719. Emlyn's edition made considerable improvements on its predecessor: the trials were arranged in chronological order, and the names of judges and counsel, dates, and notes and references were added. Emlyn included an appendix of records and wrote a preface assessing the merits of English law in comparison with other systems. He was critical of both the civil and the ecclesiastical aspects of English law and their delays, technicalities, and costs, but suggested that despite room for improvement, in their criminal law the English had 'by far the better' of their neighbours and were 'deservedly their admiration and envy' (S. Emlyn, preface, iii), principally through the public nature of English prosecutions and the use of trial by jury. Two further, supplementary, volumes appeared in 1735"" (DNB). A vast range of material is included: Volume I contains the famous proceedings against Mary, Queen of Scots, Guy Fawkes, Thomas More and Archbishop of Canterbury William Laud, to name a few. Occasional mispagination without loss of text. HLC II:989. Sweet & Maxwell 369:8. Owner signatures dated 1830.Interior generally fine, expected wear to nicely rebacked contemporary boards. An impressive compendium.

Description
Atlantic City, New Jersey, 1949. Unbound. Good. Large marquee sign measuring 83.5" wide with a height ranging from 32" to 48" at its tallest and a depth of 8". The neon tubing of the 5's of "500" are broken but the remaining tubes which reads "500 Club" twice lights up. The sign is overall very good with most of it in working order. It includes a curved side created so it nestled into the building it was hung from. A neon marquee sign for Atlantic City's infamous 500 Club for performances of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis as well as Harry James and Frank Sinatra. The sign is from the late 1940s when Martin and Lewis were in the middle of their 10 year working relationship and Frank Sinatra was rebuilding his career. Sinatra played the club so often that by the 1950s the club's sign would simply read "He's Back." Martin and Lewis began a decade's long act at the 500 Club which propelled them both into stardom when the two were scheduled to play separate acts and when they failed the two combined forces to save the night. The club was owned by Sinatra's friend the mobster Paul "Skinny" D'Amato from 1942 until it burned down in 1973. It was one of the most popular night spots on the East Coast and illegally started the first casino in Atlantic City. The sign itself lights using three plugs, two for each of the white lights behind the performers and one for the neon used for the club name. When plugged in each letter in "500 Club" lights up individually and then flashes twice as the full title. A unique artifact from the heyday of nightclubs in Atlantic City featuring superstar performers.

Description
The Macmillan Company, 1944. WINSOR, Kathleen. FOREVER AMBER. NY: The Macmillan Company, 1944. 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket; 972 pages. First Edition, first printing (so stated). Adapted into a successful 1948 movie, the 972-page novel was edited down to one-fifth of the manuscript Winsor originally presented to the publisher. Condemned for blatant sexual references, 14 states banned the book as pornography. Despite its ban, "Forever Amber" was the best-selling U.S. novel of the 1940s, selling more than 100,000 copies in its first week of release and eventually selling more than three million. Signed by Winsor on verso of the front endpaper. I have noted two variant dust jackets but I have little information to offer about them. This dust jacket, which is uncommonly fragile, is entirely printed in black- both text & the photograph on the rear cover. It is my experience that this is the more common dust jacket (the other is entirely printed in blue) but, if it is the earliest one, I do not know. Very Good (little wear covers; contents clean & tight); some edgewear (small chips & tears; price-clipped) d/j. $750.00.
