Description
New York: Random House, 1972. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A sharp, Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Some fading to the board edges, as usual, but clean and unmarked internally. Dust jacket with the spine a trifle faded, faint dampstain at the base of the spine and a crease to the rear flap. Overall, an appealing copy of Thompson's most famous work. The crackling and infamous roman à clef, the genre-defining work of "gonzo journalism" from the man Tom Wolfe called "the twentieth century's greatest comic writer in English." Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was based on the experiences Thompson had travelling with activist Oscar Zeta Acosta (nicknamed "Dr. Jonzo" within the work). Thompson had originally wanted to speak to Acosta as part of a story he was writing on a Mexican journalist who had been killed by the Los Angeles Police Department, and the two men had gone to Las Vegas to find a safer and less charged place to speak, away from the racial tensions of the city. The account was originally published in Rolling Stone in November 1971; publication in book form followed in 1972, in dust jackets dated "6/72" on the rear flap (as here). Fear and Loathing was later adapted into the 1998 cult classic film directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. "The whole book boils down to a kind of mad, corrosive prose poetry that picks up where Norman Mailer's An American Dream left off and explores what Tom Wolfe left out" (contemporary New York Times review). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description
1959. Christian, Paula. Edge of Twilight. Aldrich, Ann. Carol in a Thousand Cities. Flora, Fletcher. Take Me Home. Roberts, Herb. Strange Wife. Hilton, Hilary. The Shadowy Sex. These mid-twentieth century paperback works document the circulation of lesbian identity, relationships, and social networks within a commercial publishing environment shaped by censorship, moral regulation, and widespread pathologization of homosexuality. Issued between 1959 and 1970, these texts provide primary evidence of how same-sex desire and queer life were narrated across both fiction and hybrid literary forms. Paula Christian's Edge of Twilight, identified in Barbara Grier's evaluative framework with the highest tier designation, presents sustained lesbian characters and a narrative that avoids the punitive conclusions common in the genre, while Ann Aldrich's Carol in a Thousand Cities expands beyond pulp fiction into a collection format incorporating both fictional and nonfictional treatments of lesbian life, engaging broader intellectual and cultural discourse. Additional works in the group explore romantic relationships between women, marital conflict, and the negotiation of identity within heterosexual frameworks, reflecting the limited but significant space lesbian narratives occupied in mid-century print culture. Christian, Paula (pen name of Yvonne MacManus). Edge of Twilight. New York: Crest Books, 1959. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Flora, Fletcher. Take Me Home. Connecticut: Monarch Books, 1959. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Aldrich, Ann (pen name of Marijane Meaker). Carol in a Thousand Cities. Greenwich, Conn.: Fawcett Publications, 1960. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Roberts, Herb (pen name of Robert Carney). Strange Wife. New York: Softcover Library, 1970. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Hilton, Hilary (pen name of Keith Ayling). The Shadowy Sex. New York: Softcover Library, 1970. First edition. Mass-market paperback. Group of five paperback volumes spanning 1959 to 1970, each measuring approximately 4.25 x 7 inches and generally ranging between 150 and 250 pages. Illustrated covers follow mid-century pulp conventions, depicting women in intimate or emotionally charged poses alongside promotional language such as "One of the most candid and challenging novels ever written about today's women who dare to live in that outcast world of 'twilight' love" (Edge of Twilight) and "What would you do if you were married to a lesbian?" (Strange Wife). Narrative content includes romantic relationships between women, explorations of identity within and outside heterosexual marriage, and depictions of emotional and social conflict. Take Me Home centers on a relationship between two women framed as socially forbidden, while The Shadowy Sex situates its narrative within professional and urban environments, tracing the development of same-sex relationships within broader social constraints. Carol in a Thousand Cities differs in form, combining multiple perspectives and literary approaches to lesbian life. These works circulated within a rapidly expanding paperback market that enabled the wide distribution of controversial subject matter, even as publishers relied on sensationalized cover art and language to navigate obscenity regulations and attract readership. Lesbian pulp fiction provided one of the few accessible venues for representation of same-sex relationships prior to the emergence of organized gay and lesbian liberation movements, and works such as Edge of Twilight demonstrate early efforts to present lesbian identity outside of purely tragic or moralizing frameworks. The inclusion of both women-authored texts and pseudonymous works reflects the complex authorship landscape of the genre, where identity, marketability, and censorship intersected. Light wear including minor edge handling and a price marking to the front page of Strange Wife; otherwise clean interiors and tight bindings; overall good to very good condition. The grouping supports research into sexuality, censorship, and mid-century mass-market publishing.

Fine in Near Fine dj
Description
Secacus NJ: The Citadel Press. Fine in Near Fine dj. 1975 (c.1969). 6th printing. Hardcover. [a nice clean copy, no discernible wear to the book; the jacket is slightly rubbed and lightly soiled along the front hinge, and has a tiny puncture wound near the upper left corner of the front panel, but still has a bright and fresh appearance; a nicer copy you are not likely to find]. (B&W photographs) A relatively early entry in the long-running "Films of" book series, which follows the formula -- biographical front material, followed by a chronological film-by-film rundown of the subject's career -- but is also an exemplary volume in the series. This is largely because it eschews the "filler" that too often clutters up these books -- i.e. perfunctory plot synopses accompanied by snippets/excerpts from contemporary reviews of each films -- instead presenting a concise (but well-researched and informative) account of each film's production, along with some intelligent critical commentary, where warranted. (Which means the authors don't waste any more space than necessary on dreck like MARU MARU and CROSSED SWORDS.) You might not think that it would have taken three authors to put something like this together, but these three gentlemen were longtime friends and collaborators -- and lifelong fans and admirers of Errol Flynn. Thomas, in fact, some years later became one of the most prominent writers to push back -- hard -- against the scurrilous portrait of Flynn presented by the Charles Higham in his book "Errol Flynn: The Untold Story." Thomas's 1990 book "Errol Flynn: The Spy Who Never Was" remains the definitive rebuttal to Higham's sensational but unfounded (even fabricated) accusations that Flynn had served as a Nazi spy before and during World War II. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** (xx) .

Description
New York/Los Angeles/Toronto/London: Samuel French. Very Good. (c.1939). Unstated edition. Softcover. (printed wraps) [small tear in binding at top of spine, light handling wear and age-toning; a few pencil annotations in Act One]. (stage diagram) A comedy with an all-female cast, about a wise grandmother counseling her granddaughter, who is nervous about attending her first dance, with a flashback to how she, as a young woman, helped her six young cousins to rebel against parental strictures, and in the process found romance herself. "A charming, ideal comedy for girls' colleges, schools, and clubs. Fourteen good acting parts -- ten ingenues; four character women." As a screenwriter, the author was probably best known for writing several of the Val Lewton horror films at RKO in the 1940s, including CAT PEOPLE and THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE. Although he was associated for a number of years with the Pasadena Playhouse, I've found no evidence that was ever professionally produced there, or anywhere else. (Bodeen wrote dozens of plays, but the only one to ever make it to Broadway was "Harvest of Years," which had a two-week run in 1948.) .
