Seller
Bartlebys Books (United States)
Description
[various places in Japan, 1880. Two oblong albums, 15 1/2 x 11 in., bound in 3/4 leather and koi fish patterned cloth. A collection of images of shrines, river views, hotels, natural settings, and villages of 19th century Japan. Studio photos laid down on stiff card stock mounted on cloth tape stubs. Images are on rectos and versos of the card stock, one to a page, each 7 3/4 x 10 1/4 in. Most are identified with printed captions and numbers. Some light rubbing to leather and soiling to binding, but overall very good, images all sharp, clear. Many can be recognized as the work of Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1943) or his studio. The first album of 62 hand-tinted albumen photos are primarily views of Nikko, a small city in the mountains north of Tokyo, famous for the Shinto shrine Tochigi. Photos include a group of stone statues lining a path; Chiusenji Lake; a Sacred Bridge; Dainichido Garden; Iyemitsu Tomb; Yomeimon, Great Gate; etc. There are also more general images of a flower seller; women gathering tea leaves; a sleeping girl; a tattooed man; a basket cellar; rice planters; and a photo of a group of Japanese men and women posing with five Western men and women at tea in a room in front of a painted screen. Perhaps someone in this group was the owner of the albums. The second album of 40 hand-tinted, and 6 untinted albumen photos show views from Matsushima; Honmoku, near Yokohama; Noge Hill, Yokohama; the Room of Hot Spring Place, Hakone; Spring Scenes of Koganei near Tokyo; Nishi Honganji Temple Carving Gate at Kioto; Kurodani Graveyard at Kioto; any many more. Cameras for the amateur photographer were just beginning to become available in the 1880s, so travellers were still dependent on other ways of capturing their memories. Professional photographers often supplied images of tourist spots, either individually or in souvenir albums available for purchase. Many, if not all of the images in these two albums are products of the photographic studio of Kusakabe Kimbei in Yokohama. Although they do not bear his stamp, the numbered photos and captions can be identified in catalogues of his work. Kusakabe Kimbei trained under Felice Beato (ca.1825-1907), an Italian living in Japan, first as a colorist and later as a photographer. He opened his own studio in 1881 and his images often captured the fast vanishing world of old Japan. [see: Chris Kincaid's essay "Felice Beato and Kimbei Kusakabe, Photographers of 1800s Japan," (Japan Powered: 2018)].

New York: Ives Washburn Inc, 1930. First Edition. First edition. Signed by Danny Ahearn, inscribed on the bottom half of the title page to Hollywood columnist Jimmy Starr, "Best of Good-Luck in[?] anything you ever [?] take to. May our friendship go on for decades to come, from one Human guy to another. Sincerest regards [signed] Danny Ahearn." Hollywood bookstore (The Satyr Book Shop) ticket on rear endpaper. 254 pp. with photo frontispiece. Bound in publisher's red cloth with yellow lettering. Fine in Good pictorial dust jacket with chip to bottom of front panel, interior chip to spine panel, head chipped as well, tape mends to verso, unclipped ($2.50). Back in print in 2022, scarce signed. One career criminal's how to guide for the uninitiated, crimes certainly not limited to murder. The chapter titles tell it all: "How to Rob a Jewelry Store" (classic), "How to Stick Up a Fur Joint" (nowadays not so easy to do), "Straight Stickups," "How to Run a Crap Game" paired with its logical rejoinder "Taking a Crap Game" (heads I win, tails you lose), "Pulling a Phony Pinch," "Easy Money," "The Political Racket" (another timeless classic), "The Automobile Racket," "Beating a Frameup," and lastly the titular "How to Commit a Murder--" with the all-important next chapter "-- And Get Away with It." All told in '20s hoodlum slang. This is one Ahearns guide with an appeal to a much broader audience than book collectors and sellers, basically to anyone with an id.

Description
Mostly Flagstaff, Arizona; also San Francisco, 1967. Very good. 81 items ranging from 2¼" x 3¼" to 6" x 10½": see description for details. Generally very good or better: a few items gently worn and a few like new. This is a collection of letters, forms, reports and printed ephemera showing the drive of African American residents of Flagstaff, Arizona to increase membership in their local NAACP chapter. A few items also represent the San Francisco NAACP, including a typed letter signed by a noted female leader. The end days of World War II saw an influx of Black migration to the small logging town of Flagstaff for sawmill and lumber work. Where the 1930 census reported 115 African American residents, that of 1950 claimed 667. The town stayed segregated, with Black and Mexican homes and businesses lying south of the railroad tracks. The Northern Arizona chapter of the NAACP was founded in Flagstaff in 1951 by a group that included Annie Watkins. A former school teacher, Watkins turned to local politics when she saw that Black voters' ballots were being thrown away. She was vice chair of the county Democratic committee and led voter registration drives and education sessions for the Black community. This small collection shows the growth of the Flagstaff chapter in the 1960s, and includes 56 membership campaign envelopes filled out with names and addresses. There are membership cards, reports, endorsed checks and handwritten notes on officers, members and donations. Autograph and typed signed letters to New York headquarters reveal donations and requests for recruitment material, there's a response on HQ letterhead, and most are in their original envelopes. Notably, one of these envelopes holds pristine printed materials including a photographic brochure and the NAACP Life Membership Bulletin of June 1962, which ran "Civil Rights Round-Up" news, upcoming events and "sales hints." Three items reflect similar work in California, including a TLS on San Francisco chapter letterhead from Acting Regional Secretary Tarea Hall Pittman, asking branches to send in their 1960 reports. Pittman had been president of the California State Association of Colored Women's Clubs and of the California Council of Negro Women, and served as Director of the NAACP West Coast Region from 1961 to 1965. Vivid documentation of the efforts of African Americans to organize in Arizona and California. An inventory of contents is available.

This map appears in the Desert Magazine issue for February of 1963 on page 18, and accompanies the article 'Mineral Mecca at Darwin' by Mary Francis Berkholz. This excellent map depicts the Darwin Hills mining district near Darwin, California. The Calcite Hole, Anaconda Company, Belle Union, Lucky Jim Mine, Christmas Gift Mine, Zinc Hill Mine, and Darwin Falls. Norton Allen (1909-1997) was an American artist and archaeologist who worked in the American Southwest. For nearly four decades he was one of the in-house draftsmen who drew the outstanding maps that appeared in many issues of Desert Magazine. Unique. "A visit to the Darwin District is not complete without a stop at beautiful Darwin Falls. Here, from a sharp cleft in the barren hills, a ribbon of life-giving water dance down the fluted walls into the fern grotto and pool below. A quiet, peaceful, oasis hidden in the heart of one of the Mojave Desert's most arid regions.

London: Printed for the Author, 1737. First edition. 1737 NICOBAR PIGEON, RELATIVE OF THE EXTINCT DODO, FROM THE FIRST BIRD BOOK TO INCLUDE COLOR PLATES HANDCOLORED BY THE AUTHOR AND HIS DAUGHTER. 9x11 1/4 inches handcolored engraving from Eleazar Albin's Natural History of Birds. Bright, bold colors, heavy paper, very good. ELEAZAR ALBIN (1690 – 1742) was an English naturalist and watercolorist illustrator who wrote and illustrated a number of books including A Natural History of English Insects (1720), A Natural History of Birds (1731–38) and The Natural History of Spiders and other Curious Insects (1736). Nothing is known of Albin's early life, though he may have been German-born; he claimed to have been in Jamaica in 1701. In 1708 he is known to have been married and living in Piccadilly, London. Albin taught watercolor painting before being instructed in natural history by silk weaver and naturalist Joseph Dandridge. A Natural History of Birds has colored engravings by Albin and his daughter Elizabeth Albin. In that book Albin writes "As for the paintings, they are all done from life, with all the exactness I could either with my own hand, or my daughter's, whom I have taught to draw and paint after the life". This was the first book on birds to include color plates. Fewer than 100 copies were printed, accounting for its rarity. THE NICOBAR PIGEON (Caloenas nicobarica) is found on small islands and in coastal regions from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, east through the Malay Archipelago, to the Solomons and Palau. It is the only living member of the genus Caloenas, and may be the closest living relative of the extinct dodo,

(price-clipped) [solid copy, a bit soiled on top edge, property stamps of Ross's News Store, Scranton, Pa. on front pastedown and ffep (no other markings of any kind); jacket is worn and soiled, with tiny bits of paper loss at several corners and edges]. "A startling novel of love, crime and redemption, by an Illustrious Anonymous Author." OK, now hold it just a minute -- is it really possible to be both "illustrious" and "anonymous"? I mean, really, what's the point in THAT? Anyway, this seems like a thoroughgoing potboiler, about a "prominent criminal attorney, well versed in the art of fixing juries," who falls in love with a debutante, who is also loved by "daring young news photographer" Jimmy Cronin. The flies in the ointment of this three-way romance are gangster brothers Butch and Larry McCabe, disgruntled clients of the aforementioned lawyer, and the ensuing plot involves "an avalanche of masterfully portrayed incidents including a jail-break and the appearance of a mysterious nun on an ocean voyage." That's right, a mysterious nun. .

Stated First Printing. 9 1/4" X 6". 306pp. Very mild shelf wear to covers, corners and edges of unclipped dust jacket. Bound in black paper over boards with spine backed in white and lettered in purple. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. A very presentable signed first edition of this irresistible novel from the bestselling, award-winning author Memorial and Lot. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Cam is living in Los Angeles and falling apart after the love of his life has died. Kai's ghost won't leave Cam alone; his spectral visits wild, tender, and unexpected. When Cam returns to his hometown of Houston, he crashes back into the orbit of his former best friend, TJ, and TJ's family bakery. TJ's not sure how to navigate this changed Cam, impenetrably cool and self-destructing, or their charged estrangement. Can they find a way past all that has been said - and left unsaid - to save each other? Could they find a way back to being okay again, or maybe for the first time? When secrets and wounds become so insurmountable that they devour us from within, hope and sustenance and friendship can come from the most unlikely source. Spanning Los Angeles, Houston, and Osaka, Family Meal is a story about how the people who know us the longest can hurt us the most, but how they also set the standard for love. With his signature generosity and eye for food, sex, love, and the moments that make us the most human, Bryan Washington returns with a brilliant new novel.(Publisher).
