Description
Warsaw: Wydawnictwo “Sztuka”, 1953. COMMEMORATIVE PRINTING. With 45 numbered loose plates and 12 unnumbered loose plates, all in the publisher’s blind-stamped folio with the publisher and title printed in red on the front cover. Errata slip laid in. An excellent copy. A commemorative publication of the anniversary of the birth of Copernicus first pubished in 1933. The plates include portraits of Copernicus and da Vinci, photographic reproductions of manuscripts, photographs of the monument in Torun, Poland as well as places of interest related to Copernicus, and other illustrations. The introductory booklet was written by Birkenmajer. Rare; only 1 copy of this edition located by OCLC in America (Penn) and no other earlier copies found. Both Stanislaw (1909-1971) and his cousin Wojciech (1923-1967) were Polish graphic artists and architects. Stanislaw was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. Birkenmajer (1890-1967) was a Polish historian of science and philosophy and professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the University of Warsaw. He published the first edition of the De revolutionibus of Nicolaus Copernicus (1953).
