With mezzotint frontispiece portrait. Title-page in double-ruled border. The final leaf [pg 438] in an early state with "The end of the first volume" printed and no correction slip reading "THE END." Although it states "the end of the first volume, there were no more volumes published. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked with original spine laid down. Boards paneled in gilt. Spine tooled in gilt. Two red morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Some rubbing to board edges and spine. Previous owner's bookplates, two on front pastedown, one on rear pastedown. Bookplates of James Norman, H. Bradley Martin and William Marchbank. Minor paper flaw at bottom margin of a2, not affecting text. Bottom outer corners of leaves G2 and G3 torn, but not affecting text. Minor toning to endpapers from glue. Overall a very good copy, and internally very clean. "This is the most famous of literary mezzotints and is rarely found in such magnificent state still prefixed to this volume as intended." (Pforzheimer, 1101). Except for the piece 'Upon the Idleness of Business' the contents of this volume do not appear ro have been reprinted except in the Nonesuch collected edition of this author." The correspondence concerns Julia's response to Llewellyn Howland III's request for a contribution to Boston's Birthday Book. In the first letter she reluctantly agrees, citing the demands of her schedule. The second letter has her more engaged and reacting to the plans for the book and suggesting a few of her own. Attached to the second letter is a copy of Howland's "welcome" letter to the project. Also included is a re-addressed envelope. Fine.

Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, and influential clergyman. His sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, achieved worldwide acclaim for her abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. During Beecher's lifetime, his sermons focused on God's love, a notable departure from his Calvinist upbringing. He was a religious guide to multiple Republican presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, who said that no one in history had "so productive a mind." A recent work on his life by Debby Applegate, titled "The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher," won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 2007.

Single sheet measuring 8½” x 20”, printed both sides and folded to create a 10-panel pamphlet. Very good: faint offsetting to front panel; else internally bright with minimal wear. This is a rare promotional brochure for Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 presidential campaign, focusing on “total war on prejudice and poverty.” It features great photographic images of notable Black leaders and a list of African Americans in federal positions at the time. The brochure includes an excerpt from Johnson's 1964 State of the Union message extolling the 1963 congressional session, “which did more for civil rights than the last hundred sessions combined.” The text stressed that: “All of these increased opportunities in employment, in education, in housing, and in every field, must be open to Americans of every color. As far as the writ of Federal law will run, we must abolish not some, but all racial discrimination, for this is not merely an economic issue, or a social, political, or international issue. It is a moral issue, and must be met this session by the passage of the bill now pending in the House.” Along with a cover shot of the president, the pamphlet holds five images of Johnson meeting and conferring with African American leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr., “Mrs. Rosa Gragg of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs and Miss Dorothy Height of the National Council of Negro Women,” Hobart Taylor of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity and Carl Rowan, Director of the United States Information Agency. The rear was dedicated to “a partial listing of federal posts held by Negro decision-makers” including U.S. attorneys and federal judges, commissioners and representatives of the White House, regulatory agencies, the District of Columbia and more – nearly 100 names in all. It also held a form to “become an enrolled member of the Democratic Party” as well as text eulogizing John F. Kennedy, “the greatest leader of our time . . . struck down by the foulest deed.” A rare and compelling piece of African American political history. OCLC shows two holdings.
