Description
Yosemite National Park: Ansel Adams, 1934 Book. Fine. No Binding. Original silver-print photograph. 7 7/8 x 6 inches. Original beige mount, 13¼ x10 1/8 inches. Very slight silvering to sky area. A fine example. One of the most important images of the photographer's career. This classic image, photographed in 1927, was normally titled, Monolith, the Face of Half Dome. Our image is a vintage print, produced c.1934. This copy of the image is titled, inscribed, and SIGNED on the mount by the photographer. Because of space limitations at the bottom border of the photograph, Adams has titled this copy, Half Dome - Yosemite. The image is presented to James Bryant Conant, President of Harvard University. The presentation inscription reads, 'Dr. and Mrs. Conant, with good wishes'. Dr. Conant "was a friend of Adams and they hiked Yosemite together several times in the 1920's." The image is SIGNED, 'Ansel Adams' (Adams eliminated his middle initial "E" in his signature, c.1934). Conant was President of Harvard University from 1933 to 1953. This is an incredibly important image. Ansel Adams was going to be a concert pianist. He was that good. However, It was this particular image that finally decided his career... as a photographer. "What he saw was the majesty of the sculptural shape of the Dome in the solemn effect of half sunlight and half shadow." The provenance of this image is impeccable..

Description
15 measures, titled and signed below the music: "Thème e Bal e La Symphonie Fantastique. H. Berlioz." Undated, but ca. 1840-1850. The complete main theme of the second movement, "Un Bal," carried by the violins in measures 38 to 54 of the full score. 1 leaf. Notated in dark brown ink within decorative dark gold borders on Lard-Esnault paper. Oblong quarto (227 x 300 mm). With: - ROGER, Gustave-Hippolyte 1825-1879. Autograph musical quotation signed "G. Roger," being a 12-measure song for voice and piano commencing "d'autiens tu beau miage" to lower portion of recto. With, to verso: - ADAM, Adolphe 1803-1856. Autograph musical quotation signed "Ad. Adam," being a 16-measure waltz for piano - HALÉVY, Fromental 1799-1862. Autograph musical quotation signed "F. Halévy," being a 22-measure work for piano titled "Suite" "The composition of the 'Symphonie fantastique' was a momentous event in Berlioz's career, his first full-scale masterpiece, and equally momentous in the history of music as the first unequivocal declaration of romantic ideas in style and musical language, and its echo has pervaded all music of passion and personal experience to this day ... Of Harriet Smithson's identity as the 'beloved', portrayed by an 'idée fixe' in the form of an obsessive theme that recurs in all the movements, there can be no question." MacDonald: Berlioz, p. 18. A unique artifact incorporating a rare quotation from one of the most outstanding works of the symphonic repertoire of the Romantic period, the whole uniting Berlioz with three important French musical figures of the mid-19th century.

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1877. 233 x 155 mm. (9 1/4 x 6"). Each volume with additional specially printed title page. Two volumes bound in six.. MOST ATTRACTIVE RED CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY KAUFMANN (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers bordered by gilt rules and drawer-handle ornaments, central panel with gilt fillet frame and oblique fleuron cornerpieces, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with large central fleuron in a lozenge of small tools, intricately scrolling cornerpieces, gilt lettering, turn-ins with decorative gilt rules and rolls, gilt griffin-patterned endpapers, top edges gilt. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 333 PLATES, composed of 288 portraits (two in color) and 45 views, all with guards Title pages with ownership signature of Sophia Augusta Brown, dated January 1878. Spines very slightly and evenly darkened, the vaguest hint of wear to extremities, perhaps 10 percent of plates a bit foxed (half a dozen noticeably browned), otherwise a very fine and handsome set--clean and fresh internally (the text protected from offsetting or foxing by the plate guards), and in lustrous bindings with few signs of use. This attractively bound set, lavishly illustrated with a variety of relevant portraits and landscapes, links two of America's most important bibliophilic legacies. The subject of the biography, George Ticknor (1791-1871), was an American author and academic, specializing in the subject areas of languages and literature, and is best known for his education reforms and scholarly work on the history and criticism of Spanish literature. In 1817, Ticknor was selected as Smith professor of French and Spanish languages and literatures and professor of belles-lettres at Harvard University, where he would teach for the next 16 years. In the years of his professorship, he amassed a valuable and extensive library, which became one of the largest private collections in the country and included an impressive collection of Spanish and Portuguese literature. In 1848, Ticknor helped found the Boston Public Library, to which he donated his collection. This copy of his biography was owned by Sophia Augusta Brown, the scion of another important family of bibliophiles. Brown's father was noted collector John Carter Brown, whose extensive library now resides at Brown University; her family was also instrumental in the founding of the Providence Library and the Providence Athenaeum. The binding here deserves special mention. According to Ramsden, our binder Simon Kaufmann joined the firm of Lucien Broca in London ca. 1875, and established his own premises in Soho three years later, operating a workshop there until 1889. This set, with its rich crimson leather sparkling with gilt, is particularly pleasing on the shelf—quite fitting for the sort of bibliophile's library the Browns and Ticknor cultivated..

Mexico City: En la Imprenta Arizpe, 1810. Fair.. [14],201,[17]pp., plus twelve (of thirteen) plates. Quarto. Contemporary tree calf, gilt ruled, with gilt-lettered spine label, edges painted red. Spine ends heavily chipped, rear board separating from foot; boards rubbed, moderate edge and corner wear. Defunct library ink stamp to title page. Some worming to initial sections of text, slightly affecting printed area. Scattered staining and foxing. Plates trimmed close at fore-edge, sometimes affecting images; second plate lacking. The first work on fencing written and published in Mexico, featuring eye-catching engravings by Manuel Araoz. The author includes descriptions of various attacks, defenses, proper foot work, posture, and equipment, including detailed descriptions of the fencing sword. He states that his motive in writing the book is to promote the art of self defense, which he stresses is important not only for personal use, but also for other causes, such as the defense of one’s nation. The engravings depict over twenty positions and maneuvers, as well as the critical pieces of equipment. According to Medina, the volume was published in 1810 rather than 1809, as stated on the title page, because of delays by the engraver. A wounded copy of an important work in a contemporary binding, with attractive illustrations by a significant Mexican engraver. The Mathes copy brought $3750 at Swann in 2014. Medina, Mexico 10251. Palau 95016.

Description
Vercello: Presso Il Panialis, 1768. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. First printed edition, octavo size, 80 pp., all text in Italian. Luigi Tansillo (1510-1568) wrote several volumes of poetry, one of which was "considered licentious enough" to be placed on the list of books banned by the Vatican, by Pope Paul IV (1476-1559) (per Wiki). This work, La Balia, is considered to be one of the earliest "Pediatric" poems; although written in first half of the sixteenth century, it was not discovered until the 18th century, this book being the first time it was published. It sets forth advice for mothers to nurture their own children instead of giving them to a wet nurse, apparently "prompted by an illness of his wife after abstaining from suckling her own child". ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in later marbled paper over boards, new-ish leather spine label, new-ish endpapers, lovely vignette engraving on the title page of a woman suckling an infant, while another child rocks a third child in a cradle, with notes by Giovanni Antonio Ranza (1741-1801) at the bottom of the pages, second engraving at the end of the book of a boy fishing, with a castle, and a ship with birds, in the distance; octavo size (approximately 8" tall), pagination: (iii)-viii, 1-74. Please note that all text is in Italian. ___CONDITION: Overall very good, the binding is sturdy, corners are straight and unrubbed, hinges are solid, the text block is square, and other than some pencil marks on the front endpapers (presumably from prior booksellers), the book is free of prior owner markings; the marbled boards are somewhat rubbed with some ink stains on the front (as though a letter with wet ink had been laid on top), since the volume opens with the title page which appears to be page (iii) we assume a half-title page is lacking, and whomever bound the book trimmed the bottom edges quite close to the text (to our knowledge there is no loss of text). ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Moskva/Leningrad (Moscow/St. Petersburg): Gosudarstvennoe izdatelstvo, 1928. Second Edition. Very good. Second edition, 1 of 5000 copies; 7 3/4 x 5 1/4; pp. [1], 4-168; olive wraps, with black and green illustrations; chips with loss of paper to tips of spine; lacking ffep, else complete; a bit of wear to ccorners and edges; illustrated with 102 drawings and photographic images; overall in very good condition. Although Russia had a long history of building complex machinery, going back to the 18th century, the first Russian-built car with an internal combustion engine was not manufactured until 1896 and, prior to the Soviet Era, the country practically had no automotive industry. In the years following the October Revolution, under Stalin's great pressure for industrialization, massive factories were constructed in several big cities and the need for capable, educated mechanics increased dramatically. The current book, one of the earliest on the subject, described and illustrated in details the parts of the various internal combustion engines and their main principles of operation, with part of it in an easy-to-understand question-answer format. Not in OCLC or in the trade (as of December 2018).

1901. London: Macmillan and Co., 1901. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth with Ganesha device in gilt. First English Edition of the book that "is acknowledged as Kipling's masterpiece in fiction... The novel is the finest written about the India of the British Empire" [CGEL]. It follows the adventures of an orphan son of a British soldier who is raised by an Indian woman, becomes a disciple to a Lama, and ultimately becomes an undercover agent as well. The illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling, the author's father. The American edition is considered to have been published earlier (though in the same month as the English one). As with most of Kipling's British editions published by Macmillan, the binding is red cloth with in gilt the "Ganesha" device -- an elephant's head with a swastika (the latter had been a ubiquitous symbol in India for millennia; its use ceased in the early 1930s, when events in Germany gave the symbol a whole new meaning). This is a very good copy (front endpaper slightly cracked at the gutter, light speckling of the cloth plus one small stain on the rear cover; as always, there is some foxing of the endpapers and of the frontispiece tissue guard, and there is minor rubbing of the gilt elephant). Richards A174; Stewart 254; Livingston 250. One of the books selected as a "Modern Library 100" for the 20th Century.
