Description
New York: Viking Press, 1939. FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE. Original brown publisher’s pictorial cloth with illustrated endpapers. Dust jacket unclipped with “First Edition” on lower corner of front flap. Copyright page states “First Published in April 1939.” Includes like new folded advertisement booklet entitled “What America thinks of The grapes of wrath by John Steinbeck” by Newbegin’s Book Shop, San Francisco. Dust jacket a bit ragged on top edges with minor rubbing on joints, but otherwise very good; book in fine condition. First edition, first issue; a fine copy of Steinbeck’s most iconic novel. One of the most important pieces of twentieth-century American literature, Steinbeck’s colorful dialogue and haunting prose brought global attention to the plight of the farmers and migrant workers of the Dust Bowl. Almost one hundred years later, the novel’s central themes of economic disparity, labor rights, climate change, and religious conflict will still resonate with modern readers. This is an extremely crisp, near pristine first edition copy. As a young man, Steinbeck (1902-1968) worked with migrant laborers on the farms of his native central California coast, an experience which became a rich source of inspiration for several of his novels and short stories. Goldstone, A12.

Description
Paris: Delalain, 1805. FIRST EDITION. Engraved frontispiece in Volume 10, title vignettes, large decorative headpiece at beginning of each chapter. With 20 folding tables and charts (a few oversized) and 269 engraved plates. Contemporary half-calf over hand-blocked marbled boards; a couple of signatures browned, otherwise a superb set, with a number of signature printed on blue paper. First edition of this celebrated work on agriculture and related subjects, written by the Abbé Rozier (1734-93), distinguished French botanist and president of the Société d'Agriculteurs. Rozier, probably the most prolific writer of the eighteenth century on agriculture, completed the first nine volumes before he was killed in his house by a bomb during the 1793 siege of Lyons. The last three volumes, which also included an essay on his life and work, were edited by Chaptal, Parmentier, Biot, Lasteyrie and others. This series is still considered the most significant work on the subject at the time. Rozier also edited the Journal de Physique for the ten years between 1771 and 1780.

Description
Oxford: for the author, 1884. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION; FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. I: Printed on recto only within double-ruled border. In excellent condition. II: Text printed within double borders on E. Towgood’s cream-laid large post fine paper, as watermarked. Issued without wrappers; other than some minor stain on the inner edge of the fourth (blank) page, an excellent copy. I: First separate edition. A short holiday poem, written in 1867 which was first included in Phantasmagoria in 1869. II: First edition, first issue, with “Dear Child” on the second page and “gray-headed” and “Righteousness shall arise” on the third page. Williams at one time called this is “the rarest of the Carroll items with the exception perhaps of the first issue of the first edition of Alice in Wonderland. He was apparently referring to this first printing of Easter greeting. Copies were intended to be included with Hunting of the Snark and other books but Carroll decided to both distribute them to friends as well as sell them separately. This short pamphlet is a delightful and personal letter to his young fans reminding them that each day is new and worth looking forward while leaving behind the dreams of the past night. Williams, Madan, Green 162; 116.

Description
octavo, 106, [2] pp., at head of t.p. "De Witt's "Special Report.", in double columns, lacking wrappers, and portraits, removed from bound pamphlet volume, else good. "A murder in one's past is generally considered an impediment to a career, and one might think that this would be particularly so if the victim were the district attorney. Sickles, a congressman from New York who shot and killed the son of the author of our national anthem, may have had his advanced by it. Proof of cuckoldry is almost uniformly considered ample justification for homicide, and Sickles was acquitted for shooting his wife's lover on the streets of Washington. Thereafter he became a general in the Civil War, lost a leg at Gettysburg, and went on to be ambassador to Spain." – McDade, Annals of Murder 871
