Description
Dijon: L.N. Frantin, 1777. FIRST EDITION. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, two folding typographic tables, two folding and one half-page engraved maps, eight full-page engraved busts, nine full-page engraved plates of medallions and coins, one full-page engraved plate of a Florentine monument. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines (damage to hinges and spines, but bindings are sound). From the Royal Military College Library of Canada. Internally perfect. First edition, a comprehensive study of the Roman Republic based on the contemporary writings of Sallust. In addition to a complete translation of his Historia, the author examined maps, archaeological sites, and ancient artifacts to contextualize his recension with accurate data. Charles de Brosses dedicated the final thirty years of his life to this massive project that he died without finishing, but the result is a monumental exploration of seven hundred years of European history much prized by the scholarly community. De Brosses (1709-1777) was a politician and academic writer who made his way into the ranks of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, the Académie des Sciences, and the Arts et Belles-Lettres de Dijon. He was an enemy of Voltaire and endured exile twice. Querard VIII: 413, Brunet V: 90.

Fair to good. Toned with short tears, stains and water staining. Letter folds, dust soiling.
Description
United States: Gazette Office, Prin, 1790. Fair to good. Toned with short tears, stains and water staining. Letter folds, dust soiling.. A rather incredible (and incredibly scarce) example of type design, resulting in a religious acrostic that can be read from left to right and from top to bottom, and utilizing type ornaments to create three crosses. "Curious Piece" was popular through the 19th century in the United States through prints and samplers. Printed quarter sheet measuring approx. 12.5" by 7.5", verso blank. Accompanied by a modern transcription of a later (1858) example. The earliest example of "Curious Piece" we have been able to identify was printed c.1765, "by W. Bailey, at No 28, Great Tower-street, London" (ESTC Citation No. T34510); we suspect that this present example was printed in the United States in the 1790s, around the same time as the 1793 Samuel Sower printing (ESTC Citation No. W26372). We have, however, been unable to identify another copy of the present printing. There is an "Explanation" of the design at the foot: "The initials, INRI, at the head of the piece, is expressive of the Superscription of Pilate--Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews:--The middle column, by reading from the top down is Christ's exclamation--that on the right, the petition of the penitent thief, and the derision of the other, on the left.

Good. Toned with short tears and chipping, including one large short tear to upper right-hand corner. Minor water stains.
Description
Bismark, North Dakota: United States Public Health Service, 1930. Good. Toned with short tears and chipping, including one large short tear to upper right-hand corner. Minor water stains.. A 1930's-era public health pamphlet issued by the United States Public Health Service, warning young American men against the dangers of venereal diseases and quack doctors. Interestingly, the front cover gives little indication of the contents inside (probably for modesty's sake), but it swiftly gets to the point once it is opened. Emphasizes the importance of seeking qualified medical treatment over questionable quack doctor remedies (including shot after shot of mercury). On the subject of prevention, the pamphlet advises young men to "keep away from the kind of women who are willing to 'give you a good time,' whether they want money for it or no. DON'T FORGET IT! KEEP AWAY FROM PROSTITUTES AND LOOSE WOMEN." Folding pamphlet measuring approx. 6.25" by 3.25" folded.

Description
New York: Vintage Books, 2003. Reprint. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5x0x7. Reprint. Faint edge wear. 2003 Trade Paperback. "The protagonist of Tobias Wolff’s shrewdly -- and at times devastatingly -- observed first novel is a boy at an elite prep school in 1960. He is an outsider who has learned to mimic the negligent manner of his more privileged classmates. Like many of them, he wants more than anything on earth to become a writer. But to do that he must first learn to tell the truth about himself. The agency of revelation is the school literary contest, whose winner will be awarded an audience with the most legendary writer of his time. As the fever of competition infects the boy and his classmates, fraying alliances, exposing weaknesses, Old School explores the ensuing deceptions and betrayals with an unblinking eye and a bottomless store of empathy. The result is further evidence that Wolff is an authentic American master.
