Description
Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1895. FIRST EDITION. With lovely text illustrations and large folding colored map. Publisher’s cloth, a bit worn on the edges of the spine, and with a small label of the Norfolk & Norwich Library on the front cover and large bookplate of the Library on the front paste-down; minor browning and spotting to preliminary and endleaves only, other wise a very nice copy. First edition of the memoirs of Sir Edward Nicholas Coventry Braddon, KCMG (1829–1904) following his departure from India (he had previously published Life in India in 1872) where he had been a government magistrate. In 1878 he moved to Tasmania, becoming a member of Parliament in 1879. He later represented Tasmania on the Federal Council, the predecessor to the Constitutional Conventions of the 1890’s. He was a member of the first Australian parliament in the House of Representatives (at the age of 72 the oldest member ever elected up to that time). He ultimately became the Premier of Tasmania, a post held from 1894 to 1899. Braddon (1829-1904) was the brother of the famous novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Both the suburb of Braddon in the Australian Capital Territory and the Division of Braddon in Tasmania are named after him.

Description
Leyden: Joannem Maire, 1619. Half-vellum over marbled boards; interior lightly browned with minor stains and a few tears. An unknown annotator (T8v) refers to Claudius Salmasius's Plinanae exercitationes of 1629 or 1689. From the library of the noted and distinguished French classicist and Greek scholar Jean François Boissande de Fontarabie (1774-1857). His image is pictured in Sandys' A History of Classical Scholarship, Cambridge, 1908, III, p. 248. He is best known for his work as an editor of Greek texts, including the editiones principes of Babrius and Maximus Planudes's Greek translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses (Sandys, pp. 249-50). Another signature of Schwin[...]', front paste-down, plus other assorted marks. Scriverius (1576-1660), an independent scholar, remains best known for this, his edition with commentary of the Roman epigrammatist Marcus Valerius Martialis. His edition possesses additional interest to scholars because of quotations from Josephus Scaliger (1540-1609).

Description
New York: Schubert Piano Co, 1890. Softcover. Very Good. Manufacturer's catalogue with sheet music. Quarto. 12pp. Stapled wrappers. Illustrated in black and white with a full color ad on the rear wrapper. Wrappers splitting along the bottom of the spine, wrappers lightly soiled, and corners bumped, very good. Contains four instrumental pieces for use with the Schubert Mandolin-Piano, "Schubert Two-Step or March," "Schubert Mazurka or York," "Schubert German Melody," and "Schubert Caprice or Schottisch." The Schubert Mandolin-Piano was an upright piano with an internal device controlled via foot pedal that pressed against the strings in such a way as to mimic the sound of a mandolin, or according to the front cover, nearly any other plucked string instrument. The Antique Piano Shop website states of the Mandolin-Piano, "This unique sound quickly caught on and became widely known as the “rinky tink” or “honky tonk” piano sound used in saloons and bars across the land for decades." A neat bit of music ephemera.

Binding tight and square. 2007 Hard Cover. x, 497 pp. An account of the family life of Louisa May Alcott, American Transcendentalist and author of Little Women. Louisa May Alcott is known universally. Yet during Louisa's youth, the famous Alcott was her father, Bronson―an eminent teacher and a friend of Emerson and Thoreau. He desired perfection, for the world and from his family. Louisa challenged him with her mercurial moods and yearnings for money and fame. The other prize she deeply coveted―her father's understanding―seemed hardest to win. This story of Bronson and Louisa's tense yet loving relationship adds dimensions to Louisa's life, her work, and the relationships of fathers and daughters.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: Drawing on philosophy, the history of psychology and the natural sciences, this book proposes a new theoretical foundation for the psychology of the life course. It features the study of unique individual life courses in their social and cultural environment, combining the perspectives of developmental and sociocultural psychology, psychotherapy, learning sciences and geronto-psychology. In particular, the book highlights semiotic processes, specific to human development, that allow us to draw upon past experiences, to choose among alternatives and to plan our futures. Imagination is an important outcome of semiotic processes and enables us to deal with daily constraints and transitions, and promotes the transformation of social representation and symbolic systems - giving each person a unique style, or 'melody', of living. The book concludes by questioning the methodology and epistemology of current life course studies.(Publisher).
