Description
London: George Allen and Unwin, 1952. First UK Edition, preceding all others. Tremendous association copy, INSCRIBED by author and director Lindsay Anderson to noted Czech-British filmmaker Karel Reisz, with a quote from the film: "Karel and Julia / from Lindsay / Woman: as a warning / Louis: as a lesson / Secret People E. 13." A remarkable and extremely detailed breakdown of the classic 1952 British film noir, "The Secret People," directed by Thorold Dickinson. Anderson, here in the role of film historian, was a prominent figure of the Free Cinema and British New Wave movements as a filmmaker and film critic, later directing films such as "If..." (1968), which won the Palme d'Or in 1969, "O Lucky Man!" (1973), and "Britannia Hospital" (1982). Anderson and Reisz co-founded the influential film criticism publication "Sequence" in 1947. Very Good plus in a Fair to Good dust jacket. Slightly cocked. Jacket has large pieces missing from the top edges, a four-inch diagonal closed tear to the rear panel, and a diagonal crease running across the bottom of the front panel.

First edition of this embroidery book for children, complete with silk thread and iron-on pattern transfers that feature Attwell's beloved Boo-Boos. Best known for her Boo-Boos series, Mabel Lucie Attwell's art was quite a hot commodity in this period. In addition to illustrating numerous children's books, her darling little babies appeared on everything from tea sets to thimbles to handkerchiefs. This delightful book invites children to try their little hands at making their own Attwell merchandise, and remains remarkably intact - the thread is still vibrant and bright. 8.75'' x 6.5''. Original color pictorial boards. Front board with card flap, with five colors of thread wrapped around it. Illustrated in color and black and white. [12] pages. Six iron-on transfers in wax paper envelope tipped onto inner rear board. Binding with light edgewear, tiny area of loss to spine. A bit less of one thread color remains. Leaves with a hint of toning.

Description
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: John Campbell, 1863. Second edition. 8vo, paper wraps, 64pp. Wraps with wear to edges, library stamps, and some manuscript notes; contents excellent to Near Fine. Overall excellent to Near Fine.. A short booklet by William H. Winder (1808–1879), son of the Brigadier General and Baltimore lawyer of the same name, concerning his 1861 arrest and imprisonment for treason for his opposition to the Civil War. Winder attributes his arrest to his correspondences with Secretary of State William H. Seward and Secretary of War Simon Cameron. In his letters, Winder laid out his case that not only would a war spell the end of any union between North and South, but that an agreement between the two would be easy to reach. Winder was imprisoned in Fort Lafayette, where the "abominable treatment of prisoners [...] is too well known to require any notice in this statement” (23), and then at Fort Warren. He was released in 1862 after fifteen months. Secrets reproduces Winder’s correspondence alongside his editorializing: that he was falsely arrested under the Secretary of State’s name without the Secretary’s knowledge, that he was denied his Constitutional rights, and especially that the Republican government’s “corruption and imbecility” in its suppression of opposition to the war amounted to “terrorism” (vii). OCLC locates twenty copies of the second edition.

Description
1948. Nicoll, Gordon. London: William Heinemann, (1948). Original red cloth lettered in silver, with dust jacket. First Edition of Maugham's last novel, published two months before the American one. Set in Spain during the Inquisition, it told of a crippled girl to whom the Blessed Virgin appears in a vision. She will be healed by one of three brothers, the one who has best served God. One brother is a bishop, another is a soldier, and the third is a baker. It comes as no surprise that the humble panadero succeeds in healing the girl... In the slackness of the writing, the descent into cliche, and the contrived plot devices, CATALINA betrayed Maugham's declining powers... [It] was a feeble book with which to end a fifty-year career as a novelist. [Morgan] This copy has its lettering in silver (the publisher started out using silver but finding it unsatisfactory switched to imitation gold -- "both variations were delivered to the bookshops simultaneously"). It is a fine, bright copy; the colorful jacket, with a wraparound pictorial scene by Gordon Nicoll, is nearly fine as well (spine a bit faded, front flap price-clipped). Toole Stott A67a.
