Description
1/1/25. The archive documents important moments in both these efforts Included is a sub-archive of letters of Mrs. BarnesAlbert C. Barnes was an American chemist, businessman, art collector, writer, educator, and the founder of the Barnes Foundation. Barnes made a fortune as the developer of the antiseptic Argyrol, and subsequently amassed an impressive collection of more than 2,000 pieces of rare art. His extensive holdings include many European and American impressionist masterpieces and early modern art, including works by Cezanne, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Picasso. His collection of 181 Renoir paintings continues to be the largest number of the artist’s paintings gathered in one location.Barnes started the Barnes Foundation in 1922 as an educational institution, with strict limits to its use and very specific rules about its operations. Barnes was known for his ambition and his artistic sensibility, as well as his eccentricity. At the Foundation, he insisted that the art be displayed in a unique way, exhibiting the works by their formal and expressive similarities rather than using the traditional method of grouping items by the date they were created, the place of origin, the type of item, or its medium.Barnes was an early advocate for educational opportunities for African Americans. As the Barnes Foundation writes, ""Committed to racial equality and social justice, Albert C. Barnes believed that education was the cornerstone of a truly democratic society. At his West Philadelphia factory, where many of his employees were African American, Dr. Barnes structured the workday to include seminars on art and philosophy. In 1927, he established a scholarship program to support young Black artists, writers, and musicians who wanted to further their education. The beneficiaries included poet and essayist Gwendolyn Bennett; artist and professor Aaron Douglas; violinist David Auld for study at the Juilliard School in New York; and composer Frederick Work for training in Europe.""Henry Hart first met Dr. Barnes in the early 1920s while Hart was employed as a journalist for the Philadelphia Record. The two developed a close friendship, and maintained a personal relationship until Dr. Barnes’s unexpected death. Henry Hart transitioned from journalism and became an editor at Scribner, where he published “The Art of Henri-Matisse.” The book was released on January 13, 1933.The archiveThe 1920s: educational opportunities for African Americans, early Barnes Foundation history. Approximately 50 letters letters, typed documents, as well as some copies, relating to early incidents and issues around the founding of the Foundation. Among them are letters of Barnes to Hart touching on his efforts to bring educational opportunities to African Americans.1930s-1940s. A combination of hundreds of ALSs (these are surely unpublished), TLSs (comprising the majority), and carbon copies, some typed. Topics include: Galleries in Europe, Education, his book proposed book Adventures of a Young Man, publications he has read, literary and artistic figures such as Hemingway, Matisse, contemporary painting and painters, the Philadelphia social and educational scene, Barnes' travels around the world and to visit exhibitions, and printed by-laws of the Barnes FoundationAn archive from Mrs. Barnes1960s: Approx. 40 letters from the widow Mrs. Laura Barnes, touching on the state of the Foundation, a book she hoped to write, the gardens, her deceased husband. Included are letters from her doctor on her declining health.Pamphlets:Some formal printed mateiral includes: Sabotage of Public Education: - with a note of Barnes; The Progressive Decay of the PA Museum of Art; The Case of Bertrand Russell vs Democracy and Education.Barnes' copies of ""Les Arts a Paris, Actualites Critiques des Arts et de la Curiosite, Paul Guillaume"", 1923-1929, with 2 inscriptions by Guillaume, one to Mrs. Barnes and another to Mr. Barnes.""A Plan for Negro Education,"" by Paul HogansThe first 3 copies of the ""Journal of the Barnes Foundation,"" Volume 1, Nos 1-3, ""An experiment in education”An exceptional archive of relevance to both art and civil rights.

Description
1978. U.S. Army and Defense Department Soviet-threat instruction archive documenting late Cold War American intelligence on Soviet ground forces into battle-simulation tables, field doctrine, weapons comparisons, and nuclear battlefield procedures. "Soviet Military Power," carrying Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger's printed preface, shows Soviet tanks, artillery, helicopters, SS-20 and ICBM and SLBM launchers, bombers, naval construction, Afghanistan, and technology acquisition. The technology-transfer passage offers one of the clearest Cold War intelligence arguments stating that "The communist countries are some of the National Technical Information Services' best customers," and that before the Soviet subscription was terminated in February 1980 the Soviets bought an estimated 80,000 NTIS documents each year. Set beside Army manuals on Soviet organization, antitank weapons, SCUD-B missiles, PT-76 tanks, electronic warfare, and nuclear battlefield doctrine, the passage records an information war fought through public documents as much as espionage, the same government warning of Soviet acquisition of American technical literature was producing its own unclassified guides to Soviet equipment and tactics for battle simulation, officer training, and operational planning. Archive of five U.S. government publications and extracts on Soviet military organization, operations, tactics, weapons, electronic warfare, technology transfer, and nuclear battlefield doctrine. The group consists of staple-bound, punched, and wrappered government manuals and reports with organizational charts, contents pages, doctrinal summaries, weapons tables, captions, printed prefaces, equipment photographs, and restricted-distribution or field-manual markings. 1] United States Army Combined Arms Combat Developments Activity. HB 550-2, Organization and Equipment of the Soviet Army. Fort Leavenworth, Kansas: Threats Division, Concepts, Doctrine and Literature Directorate, Combined Arms Combat Developments Activity, 31 July 1978. Approximately 70 pages. 2] Defense Intelligence Agency. Review of the Soviet Ground Forces. RSGF 1-80. Washington, D.C.: Defense Intelligence Agency, January 1980. 39 pages. 3] United States Department of Defense. Soviet Military Power. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1981. 99 Pages. Approximately 55 pages. 4] United States Department of the Army. FM 100-2-1, The Soviet Army: Operations and Tactics. Washington, D.C.: Headquarters, Department of the Army, 16 July 1984. Approximately 110 Pages. 5] United States Department of the Army. Extract FM 100-2-1, The Soviet Army: Operations and Tactics. Washington, D.C.: Headquarters, Department of the Army, after 16 July 1984. Approximately 40 Pages. These materials come out of the most dangerous turn of the late Cold War, the years when détente collapsed and the United States rearmed against an adversary it believed it was losing ground to. Afghanistan, the failure of SALT II, and the Reagan buildup hardened the conviction that American intelligence had undercounted Soviet strength, and out of that conviction came an industry of threat assessment whose working products these are. This archive shows the American manufacturing knowledge of its enemy: Soviet organization, armor, and doctrine reduced to simulation tables at Fort Leavenworth, codified into field manuals, and repackaged as public argument under the Secretary of Defense's name. Containing many references to nuclear, biological, and chemical operations as routine doctrine, while Soviet Military Power tallies the SS-20, ICBM, and SLBM launchers aimed at the West. Working copies containing scattered annotations and highlighted portions in some. Overall in good condition.

Description
Quarto, two pages, plus stamp less address leaf, old folds, some archival tape repairs at fold joints, some light creasing and wrinkling, else very good. Davis writes to Jasper Yeates of Lancaster, Pennsylvania seeking his support for appointment to the prothonotaryship of Chester County: "Sir, Under the permission of Mr. Burd, I have presumed to address this to you, requesting you will not be offended at the liberty I have taken. In consequence of an idea that prevailed sometime since that the prothonotaryship of Chester County would soon become vacant – and encouraged thereto by the recommendation of the Chief Justice, Mr. Rush, Mr. Shippen, Mr Burd, and the several Gentlemen of the bar residing in this city. I had prepared an application to council praying for the appointment, that event not taking place my application was never presented. The assembly at their present session it is expected will pass a bill for the division of Chester County, which petition I flatter myself will be recommended by the several Gentlemen who honored me with their former signatures – Having thus assumed the freedom of acquainting you with these circumstances, will you permit me respectfully to solicit your interest in my behalf, and, if you should be pleased to consider me deserving your good opinion, that you will honor me with recommendatory letters to your friends in Council, which I may present in time, as other applications I believe are now onfoot; and if you should not think me too humblesome I would earnestly solicit your influence with the other Gentlemen of the bar in Lancaster who are acquainted with me, for their names to a Recommendation in my favor, which signed by yourself and them will be in addition to that at the foot of my petition, I hope I shall here be able to obtain … Geo. Davis" Jasper Yeates (b. Philadelphia 1745 – d. Lancaster, 1817), lawyer, jurist. Studied law under Edward Shippen (1728-29-1806). Admitted to the bar, 1765, he practiced successfully in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was active in local politics, Yeates was a moderate Whig and chairman of the Lancaster County committee of correspondence, 1775. He opposed the Pennsylvania constitution of 1776; later he was instrumental in ratification of the Federal Constitution at the Pennsylvania convention. Associate justice, Pennsylvania supreme court, from 1791 until his death.

Description
Boston: Ginn & Company, The Athenaeum Press, 1897. First edition. 1897. SCARCE PROVOCATIVE ESSAY ON THE NATURE OF PROTOPLASM BY PIONEERING FEMALE BIOLOGIST BEFORE THE RISE OF CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY. 25 x 18 cm volume in publisher's green printed paper wraps, [4], 176 pp. Covers detached with edges chipped, paper spine partially perished, binding secure, all pages present in a custom protective mylar cover. A complete copy of the first edition of this rare volume. SARA GWENDOLEN FOULKES (1863 – 1936) was an American zoologist, marine biologist and poet. She was initially educated at private schools and subsequently attended Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania. She conducted research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and at the Station Biologique de Roscoff. During the 1880s, Foulke focused her research on infusoria and rotifers, microscopic water inhabiting animals. She later focused on the properties of protoplasm, and in 1897 published The Living Substance as such, and as Organism as a supplement to The Journal of Morphology. Although initially harshly criticized, in writing her obituary, Henry Van Peters Wilson claimed it as a work of "genius". The book delves into the concept of life and the nature of living organisms. Andrews explores the idea that all living things are made up of a "living substance" that is different from non-living matter. She argues that this substance is capable of self-organization and self-regulation, and that it is the basis for all life on Earth. Andrews also discusses the role of this living substance in the development and evolution of organisms. She examines the ways in which living things adapt and change over time, and how they are able to maintain their integrity and identity despite these changes. Throughout the book, Andrews draws on a range of scientific and philosophical sources to support her arguments. She discusses the work of prominent scientists such as Charles Darwin and Ernst Haeckel, as well as the ideas of philosophers such as Immanuel Kant and Arthur Schopenhauer. The book offers a unique perspective on the subject that is still relevant today, more than a century after it was first published. OBITUARY BY H. V. WILSON, Science No 158Feb 26, 1937 (condensed): "On December 13, 1936, there passed away a woman with the rare gift of genius, Mrs. Ethan Allen Andrews, the wife of Professor E. A. Andrews, of Johns Hopkins. Her earlier investigations dealt with infusoria and rotifers, but she became deeply interested in the structure and habits of protoplasm in general. And this is the theme of her classic memoir, "The Living Substance as Such: and as Organism," published as a special supplement of the Journal of Morphology in 1897, a memoir which carried her name and aroused admiration in biological circles throughout the world. It has both depth and a grasp of many ideas. And one can read to advantage and with pleasure to-day this record of the multifarious experiences of a very thoughtful mind and a remarkable pair of eyes, aided by the best microscopic equipment of the time, in an exploration of the appearance and behavior of living protoplasm in protozoa, myxomycetes, leucocytes of invertebrates, sea-urchin and starfish embryos, fish eggs and other things. The histological section of this notable work is followed by a survey of the various phenomena of living nature as exhibited by individual organisms, all looked on as the outcome of the activities of substances, species-plasms or idioplasms, conceived of as isomorphic, everywhere differentiative and directive, and not optically analyzable. All these are designated "substance organs." Whether such ideas are tenable time and the future history of our present concept of genes as persistent and self-perpetuative entities will show. However that may be, the reader turning the pages of this memoir, now forty years old and which did not come into its own at once but encountered some inept criticism, will readily recognize, employing the words of von Baer, that we have here "observations and reflections" of genius."--H. V. Wilson was the world's leading authority on the morphology, taxonomy and behavior of sponges for over three decades.

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1924. Reissue. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 8x5x1. Reissue. Jacket edges rubbed, light stain to jacket spine base, front hinge just beginning to weaken. 1924 Hard Cover. 281 pp. "He who laughs last, laugh best," goes the saying. But it is a question in the Romley family who will be the last. Certainly not Sidney, though, who at fifteen asserted a strange independence and was probably the least of the famous Joseph Romley's children to look like a poet's daughter. But Sidney, determined to escape the stigma of poetry just for a summer, goes to visit her Aunt Achsa on Cape Cod. In the wharves and boats of Provincetown she finds a whole cargo of glorious adventures, including the capture of a band of ultra-modern pirates, with a five-thousand dollar reward. And, to her great surprise, she comes to play an unexpected part in sister Trude's romance, too.
