Very good, overall.
Description
Tokyo: Shinkosha, 1924. Very good, overall.. [2],4,[2],4,[26],192,[4]pp., plus three folding maps at rear. Original printed cloth boards, with contemporary glassine wrapper affixed to pastedowns; in original cardstock box with printed paper labels. Minor fading and soiling to cloth. Early ownership inscription and owner's ink stamps on rear pastedown. Light toning internally. Moderate wear and a couple of repaired tears to card box, but still a nice example. "A guidebook for Hawaii based on personal impressions, with notes on Hawaii's history, industry, agriculture, education, social organizational activities, and individuals."— The Japanese in Hawaii. According to the same reference, the author was an early immigrant to Hawaii and a promoter of the islands to other citizens of Japan. In his introduction to the present book, Uehara explains that he is offering a guide book to the islands because he was not aware of any other guides published in Japanese and most Japanese visitors to the United States relied on Baedekers, which did not include the Hawaiian Islands. The book is illustrated with 26 half-tone photographs of Hawaiian scenes, including surfers, Japanese immigrants, agriculture, and Hawaiian people and with scattered, additional in-text images. The three folding maps at the rear delineate Oahu, Kuwai, and Hawaii. A rare and significant guidebook to 1920s Hawaii by a Japanese immigrant to the islands -- OCLC locates only three copies, two in Japan and one at the University of Hawaii. The Japanese in Hawaii 370.

Description
New Castle: M. Angus & Son, 1801. First edition. Featuring eight woodcuts by Thomas Bewick. Nineteenth century pebbled cloth with gilt to spine. Yellow coated endpapers. Corners gently bumped and some bubbling to cloth of front board; rear hinge a bit tender and rear pastedown faintly soiled. Internally pleasing, with some offsetting to the title page and occasional light scattered foxing as is typical in imprints of this period. Some leaves unopened. A scarce work on educating both men and women in elocution, OCLC reports copies at only 10 institutions in the U.S. At the turn of the century, there was a strong sense that a good citizen must be an eloquent citizen. To train the rising generation, elocution and rhetoric manuals began to flood the market. Yet women were often neglected by the authors of these manuals, who focused on helping young men "rise in the world by demonstrating how to speak correctly and confidently...Most elocution texts only considered males, as they alone were being trained for public life. Women were routinely satirized for their incorrect use of language. The ignorance of the best known caricature, Mrs. Malaprop in R. B. Sheridan's The Rivals, was perpetually horrifying" (Franklin). One of the earliest examples of an elocution book written by a woman for women was Mary Wollstonecraft's pseudonymously published Lady's Preceptor (1792), which predated her cornerstone feminist tract Vindication of the Rights of Women. Within a decade, works like the present New Preceptor began to recognize and address this educational gap. Echoing the title of Mr. Cresswick's (Wollstonecraft's) work, R. Kay drew on his own experience as an instructor to empower both men and women to be competent speakers. Notably, Kay does not overtly acknowledge what a progressive move he makes. Never does he make an argument for including the ladies in these lesson. The result is simply the assumption that any youth of England should be given the opportunity for clear self expression. A well organized guide, signaling a change in women's education.

Description
New York: Hearst's International Library Co, [1915]. First American Edition. 280 x 215 mm. (11 x 8 1/2"). 187, [1] pp. HANDSOME DARK BLUE MOROCCO, GILT, covers framed by decorative roll and multiple gilt rules, floral spray cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments with central floral spray within a delicate frame, gilt lettering, PICTORIAL DOUBLURES using plates from the book (Arthur Rackham's "Unconquerable" at front; Waterlow's "Harvest Moon" at rear), each picture with gilt tooling at edge, within a wide frame of red and dark blue morocco tooled in gilt, blue morocco hinges, ivory watered silk free endleaves, all edges gilt. WITH 25 PLATES, consisting of a photographic frontispiece portrait of King Albert, 14 color plates mounted on heavy stock, and 10 black & white plates printed on glossy stock, almost all of these with original tissue guards. Just the faintest hint of shelf wear, one color plate with minor tear, but still a fine and handsome copy--clean and fresh internally, in a lustrous decorative binding. This sumptuously illustrated publication celebrating Belgium and its King Albert I is offered here in a lovely contemporary binding. Assembled in the early days of the First World War, this publication aimed to raise broader awareness and support for the plight of the Belgians at the hands of the Kaiser's armies, as well as honoring the nation's bravery. Novelist Hall Cain (1853-1931), who edited the anthology, wrote in the introduction that "Belgium has fought not only her own battle but also the battle of France, the battle of Great Britain and the battle of Freedom. By her brave stand against incalculable odds she has added a new and inspiring chapter to the heroic annals of humanity and perhaps lifted to a higher level the future destinies of man." Following the 1914 British edition by only a few months, our American printing includes a note that the publisher's proceeds are to be donated to the Belgian Fund. "King Albert's Book" includes text, music, and illustrations by nearly 240 contributors, including religious leaders (Aga Khan, the Archbishop of Canterbury), politicians (William Howard Taft, Winston Churchill), authors (Rudyard Kipling, Baroness Orczy), scientists (Guglielmo Marconi, Flinders Petrie), composers (Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns), and, of course, artists: the plates include works by Arthur Rackham, Charles Dana Gibson, Kay Nielsen, Maxfield Parrish, Edmund Dulac, and others. Two of these plates, by Rackham and Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow, have been mounted as doublures in the present copy. The luxury binding, though unsigned, was evidently the work of a very skilled artisan. The quality of the finishing is excellent, and the design is harmonious, though sufficiently restrained to be respectful of the subject matter..
