Basel: J. Oporinus, 1555. Struthius, Josephus [Stru , Józef] (1510 - 1568/69). Sphygmicae artis iam mille ducentos annos perditae & desideratae libri V. 8vo. [16], 366, [16]pp. 2 folding tables, woodcut text illustrations. Basel: Oporinus, [1555]. 155 x 100 mm. Limp vellum ca. 1555, remains of leather ties, old paper labels on spine. Portion of upper title cut away affecting author's name and title; missing portion supplied in facsimile. Very good. A few marginal notes in an early hand on first few text leaves. First Edition. Sphygmicae artis is the most significant work on the pulse between Galen and Harvey; it includes what is probably the earliest graphic representation of the pulse. Struthius, a Polish physician, "suggested a method for quantitative estimation of blood pressure by displacement of graded weights, and he provided the first study of the pulse illustrated in graphic form. First published in 1555 by Johannes Oporinus of Basel, [Struthius's] book was used by Harvey in his work on the circulation of the blood but ignored by most standard historians of medicine" (Compston). Struthius also anticipated the development of the polygraph, stating in the Sphygmicae that "if you wish to find out, based on the pulse, if someone you suspect to be guilty is guilty or not, touch their arteries and by that you scare them . . . If someone feels guilty he will immediately fall into a spiritual disorder such as fear, sadness or fear connected with anger. Many people try to hide these experiences; however, their pulse discovers and reveals them against their will" (quoted in Varvounis, Made in Poland: The Women and Men who Changed the World [2016]). Description
London: Hugh Rees Ltd, 1930. FIRST EDITION. Complete with author’s portrait on frontispiece, 3 folding maps, 38 plates (31 colored) after G.E. Lodge, Roland Green and H. Gronvold, text illustrations throughout. Original green cloth, gilt lettering, some rubbing to corners and edges of spine; despite minor browning to preliminary and blank leaves, a very nice wide-margined copy, uncut, from the library of Dr. James M. Dolan Jr., with his blind-stamp on title page. First edition of the most systematic account on Egyptian birds. The work is based on Nicoll’s manuscript with notes and description of the Egyptian avifauna. The book first treats birds of ancient Egypt and the concept of bird protection. Some ninety species of birds in the paintings on ancient tombs are identified; it is noted that many species became extinct because of the disappearance of the papyrus thickets due to the aridity of the country. The majority of the text contains a fully annotated list of the birds of Egypt, and for each species there is a complete physical description, including plumage, as well as information on distribution, nidification and field characteristics. A full bibliography appears in one of the appendices. Nicoll (1880-1925), assistant director of the Zoological Gardens at Giza, was an outstanding naturalist. It had always been his intention to publish a detailed account of the birds of Egypt, but he died before the completion of this work. His friend Meinertzhagen (1878-1967), a British war hero and ornithologist, was approached by Nicoll’s widow to complete and publish the manuscript. Meinertzhagen was friends with many prominent figures such as Winston Churchill and T. E. Lawrence. He has been known as the spy who didn’t kill Hitler when he met him while carrying a loaded gun in his pocket. He wrote numerous papers for scientific journals such as the Ibis. Anker, 363; Casey Wood, 492.

London: William Heineman, 1935. FIRST TRADE EDITION. Black publisher’s cloth, in original black and gold dust-jacket; minor foxing, otherwise an excellent copy. First trade edition of Maugham’s second book about Spain. Apparently Maugham felt that his original impressions of Spain were rather conventional and typical of any other young person visiting a foreign country for the first time. So he looked beyond his first impressions to author a second book on Spain, providing a riveting portrayal of its food & drink, people, places and culture. Description
1925. [Women's Education]. Photo Album: Truro Cornwall Teacher Training College. Truro, Cornwall UK: 1925-1927. Oblong octavo. Bradbound brown boards patterned for leather effect, "Album" stamped in gilt on cover. Modest rubbing to the front hinge, and slight bumping at the corners. 164 glossy-finish snapshot photographs of the female college students and their life at Cornwall in a variety of sizes, including 3.5" x 5.5", 2.5" x 4.5", 3.5" x 2.5" inches, both black and white and sepia. Most are captioned in white ink. Slight warp to some photographs from being pasted to the pages, and occasion residue from fingerprints. Beautiful, impressionistic portraits of the life of these hopeful young teachers in Cornwall. In addition to the many vivid photos of the teachers going for outings and picnicks ("Help yourself to the cream") and lively portraits ("the long and short of it" under a photograph of a tall young woman smiling ruefully), there are photographs of the ancient city of Cornwall, which carry a beautiful, spectral quality. In the 1920s, teaching was one of the only pursuits available to women who wanted economic enfranchisement outside of waged domestic service. However, there were many restrictions placed on female teachers; The women we see smiling in these photos, although choosing liberation in one sense, also faced much personal sacrifice. These women had to live morally exemplary lives by the rigorous contemporary standards, since they were entrusted to raise the youth. Additionally, until 1944 in the UK, no married women were allowed to work as teachers. If a woman teacher married, she had to resign from her job; if she was already married, she was sacked. Some women found a way around the marriage bars by marrying in secret and then living apart from their husband, or by having a very long engagement. Most female teachers, however, remained single in a time when marriage and motherhood signified adult female identity. The tensions between two identities-- that of the professional teacher and that of the feminine woman-- coupled with the influence of the suffrage movement and systematic unfair treatment in the teacher's unions, led to teachers becoming some of the most ardent feminists of the movement.

"Published by the Ray Society in 1848, 'British Naked-eyed Medusae' covers a group which was little-studied at the time. Much of the nomenclature has since changed, but the species descriptions and the 13 plates of hand-coloured illustrations remain invaluable."--Pisces Conservation Ltd. EDWARD FORBES (1815 - 1854) was a British naturalist, pioneer in the field of biogeography, who analyzed the distribution of plant and animal life of the British Isles as related to certain geological changes. One of Forbes' achievements was to have advised and helped the young Thomas Henry Huxley before, during and after the latter's voyage on HMS Rattlesnake. During the voyage Huxley sent details of his discoveries back to Forbes, who arranged for their publication. These publications were instrumental in Huxley's early election to the Royal Society at the age of 25.
