Florence: Cosimo Giunti, 1612. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. (2) ff, 77 pp, (1), (1) f with printer's emblem. Bound with: [GALILEI, Galileo & CASTELLI, Benedetto]. Risposta alle Opposizioni del S. Lodovico delle Colombe, e del S. Vincenzo di Grazia... Florence, Cosimo Giunti, 1615. (1) ff, (2), 319 [ie 335] pp with numerous mispaginations, (5) including printer's emblem. Bound in contemporary limp vellum with MS title on spine, "Galileo Galilei Opera', internally very fresh, an excellent copy in all respects. A remarkable pairing of two Galileana bound together by a contemporary follower of the power struggle between Galileo and the Aristotelians. The second augmented edition of Galileo's classic on hydrostatics, published the same year within months of the first edition, represents his first published work in physics (Drake, p. 179). The Discorso is hailed by historians of science as having united for the first time two previously separate disciplines: statics and dynamics, resulting in a new science of mechanics, containing his first published statements on the concept of moment, an abstract concept of physical force which has been shown to have dominated his early physical thinking, and contains several first announcements concerning some of his great astronomical discoveries relating to sunspots, the triple form of Saturn, and the phases of Venus. The present 2nd edition contains significant additional text concerning this important concept. The Risposta, one of the scarcest of Galileo's works on the market, contains his lengthy and scathing replies to his critics only a year before his official castigation by the Catholic Church. Two years after the publication of the Sidereus Nuncius which assured his place in the history of science, and after displaying his telescopic discoveries in Rome, Galileo returned to Florence and devoted himself to the study of floating bodies, "the real, intrinsic and total cause why some bodies float and others sink." In the Discorso, Galileo supports Archimedes and opposes Aristotle on the behavior of bodies in water, arguing that the reason some solids sink is the excess of their weight over the weight of water. Employing the concept of moment- "the force with which the mover moves and the floating body resists" -and the principle of virtual velocities, Galileo far surpasses the hydrostatic considerations of Archimedes: "The new method enables Galileo to unify statics and dynamics into a new science of mechanics which became the foundation of modern physics" (Rose, The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics, p. 287). As noted above, the second edition may be distinguished from the first by the additional material contained therein; notably, Galileo drew attention to these additions by printing them in Roman type rather than Italic. Among these additions are Galileo's first announcements of the Sun's rotation period, his announcements of sunspots, and his discovery of the "horns" of Saturn.

Limp vellum c. 1603. Minor foxing and toning, but very good. Seventh edition. Clavius (1538-1612), a member of the Jesuit order, was one of the most respected astronomers in Europe. He was the main architect of the Gregorian calendar (which we use today), and his astronomical textbooks were widely used for over fifty years. His commentary on the "Sphaera" of Sacrobosco, first published in 1570, demonstrates his adherence to the geocentric model of the universe. .

Illustrations in the present issues include a map of Sinaloa, Heath's Spiral Spice Mill (and various other machines), the Coffey & Risdon Boiler Factory, and sectional illustrations of the Colorado River, among others. There are also articles related to encouraging emigration to Sinaloa, Mexico and notices of local "theatricals;" along with a wealth of advertisements for scientific equipment, services, and local businesses. The June 9, 1862 issue even prints a "Business Directory" of almost seventy commercial interests who have subscribed to the periodical. A nice batch of issues of Mining and Scientific Press from its early few years of publication.

Description
1950. Homelessness press photography archive, 1951 to 1990s, documents displaced people in American cities through images of soup kitchens, public sleeping spaces, roadside survival, emergency shelters, and encampments. The archive provides primary visual evidence for the study of urban poverty, public welfare, veteran reintegration, housing insecurity, and the changing visibility of homelessness in the second half of the twentieth century. Its strongest historical value lies in the range of settings recorded: postwar charitable food assistance, men sleeping in parks and public spaces, Vietnam veterans gathered beneath highway infrastructure, shelter-based aid, and women living in vehicles with personal belongings and pets. The archive consists of eight black-and-white silver gelatin press photographs from the United States, dated from 1951 to the 1990s, most measuring approximately 7.25 x 9 inches, with several retaining original press captions or newspaper clippings mounted on the verso. The earliest image shows a 1951 soup kitchen scene assisting homeless residents. Later photographs show Vietnam veterans beneath an underpass, using mattresses and boxes for seating; a Queens, New York veterans' shelter where an African American veteran shops for clothing with a staff supervisor; and Gabrielle Mendosa resting on a mattress near the Miami River beside the encampment identified as "Tent City under the Xway." Additional images show men sleeping on park benches or lawns, including a scene associated with the Boston Freedom Trail Walk for the Homeless, two men attempting to sell recovered household appliances by the roadside, and a woman identified as Lynn living in her car with her belongings and dog while seeking assistance. The photographs are significant because they record homelessness not as a single condition but as a set of lived circumstances shaped by food insecurity, military afterlives, public space, shelter access, informal economies, and the absence of stable housing. The retained press captions and clippings connect the images to their original journalistic use, showing how homelessness was presented to newspaper audiences across several decades. Minor edge wear, light handling marks, and typical press-photo surface wear; verso caption material and clippings present on several photographs; images remain clear and usable; overall very good. Concentrated documentary archive showing American homelessness from institutional relief to street encampment, with particular strength in veteran homelessness and urban public visibility.

Description
St. Louis: TV Personalities. (c.1957). (Volume 3). Plastic comb binding. Near Fine. [nice clean copy, no signfiicant wear, plastic comb backstrip completely intact]. (B&W photographs) "Interesting Biographical Information about ... well known Television Stars," averaging a bit less than a page in length for each (about 185 people are covered in 158 pages), with each entry accompanied by a head shot. Many of the names we recognize today as iconic stars of early television were covered in Volumes 1 and 2, and while there are still quite a few recognizable big names in Volume 3 (Frank Sinatra, Dick Powell, Gene Kelly and Orson Welles, for example), the preponderance is of mid-range talent, supporting players and the like, with an occasional movie star whose career was on the wane (Betty Grable, Mickey Rooney, Buster Crabbe), along with a smattering of up-and-comers (Julie Andrews, Robert Shaw). Even one dead guy made the cut: James Dean! (A rather curious entry, given that Dean appeared in only one filmed teleplay; most of the entry discusses his film career and his still-nascent posthumous celebrity.) There are number of familiar TV news names, as well: Mike Wallace, David Brinkley, and Ralph Story. One particularly charming element is that the name index (essential because the entries are not in alpha order) includes numerous character names, e.g. there are index entries for William Frawley and Hugh O'Brian, but also for "Mertz, Fred" and "Earp, Wyatt." (The non-alphabetical arrangement also results in some hilarious juxtapositions, such as Orson Welles and Gumby appearing on facing pages.) There was no duplication from one volume to the next, i.e. each one contains a unique set of entries -- and yet this Volume 3 (from 1957) chronicles an awful lot of people who were around and quite prominent at the time Volume 1 (1954) was published, but for whatever reason hadn't "made the cut" for the first two books. In the back of this book are ads for the two previous editions, each with a complete list of the personalities contained therein; good luck in assembling a complete set, though -- all volumes are pretty scarce. .
