He is best known for publicly championing a terminal patient's right to die via physician-assisted suicide; he claimed to have assisted at least 130 patients to that end. He famously said, "dying is not a crime". In 1999, Kevorkian was arrested and tried for his direct role in a case of voluntary euthanasia. He was convicted of second-degree murder and served eight years of a 10-to-25-year prison sentence. Exceptionally detailed, bespoke, contemporary full morocco, signed on the cover by Jill Smith, intricately inlaid, white silk moiré, framed endpapers, bearing a gilt inscription from a husband to his wife on their wedding day (Jan. 1, 1859, probably dating the binding as 1858), all edges gilt, light wear to covers, neatly rebacked, small chips to the corners of the vignette title page, a trace of foxing but printed on paper vastly superior to what was general on American books in 1847, and still near fine. 50 unprecedented engraved plates of anthropomorphic plants (simultaneously poetical and satirical) dressed in flower and leaf enhanced French couture of the day, when seamstresses were independent, hired individually and came to the customer. The 50 plates are professionally and, in this copy, artistically, hand colored (the publisher’s choice of the painters he employed varies from copy to copy), with 2 additional botanical plates in black and white, all as called for and as issued. Complete with the errata, the contents, the Modern Botany for Ladies, The Cultivation of Flowers (Ladies Horticulture), and the Supplement to Ladies Botany. The book is a famed one, the binding on this copy is an additional beautification. It’s the quality sometimes seen on French editions of Grandville’s works but not encountered on his translations into English. And for a mid–century binding on an American book, it’s extraordinary. Collation: 385pp. + 152p., 8p. In these illustrations, Grandville followed in the steps of the likes of Bosch, Bruegel, and Goya as ancestors in the first hazy light before sunrise, of what became the grotesque in surrealism, more evident (to me) in the 2nd of the 3 plates opposite page 136, the one opposite page 230, the one opposite page 252, and that opposite page 261. And these were 18 years before Tenniel’s assault on reality in Alice in Wonderland, and 70 years before surrealism was named, when it hatched out of Dada in the 1920s. Grandville’s other major works, (including The Animals and Another World) combined with this one to express the varieties and possibilities of the concept and marked him as an inventive genius without peer in his time.

Ferlinghetti is remembered first as a poet (A Coney Island of the Mind remains among the best-selling books of American poetry) and as the co-founder of City Lights Books, the San Francisco bookshop and publishing house that became the nerve center of the Beat movement. But he was also a playwright, and Unfair Arguments with Existence was his first published work for the theater. The seven short plays move from the relatively conventional realism of The Soldiers of No Country toward progressively more abstract forms, culminating in the pure, premeditated action of The Nose of Sisyphus, in a territory Ferlinghetti called "third stream theatre," just short of the unrehearsed happening. Each play isolates a single figure within his own world and obsessions; what Ferlinghetti proposed as the modern replacements for the fatal flaws of classical drama. Acknowledging debts to Artaud, and closer in form and content to Ionesco, Genet, and Tardieu than to any American playwright of the period, the plays brought to the stage the same restless, anti-establishment energy that had defined his poetry, applied now to a medium he believed was overdue for the same liberation.

THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE BOOK THAT INTRODUCED THE IDEA OF "SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION" AS A FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTIC OF SOCIAL NETWORKS. One of the key characteristics of social networks is what is known as the "small world phenomenon" - the idea that every individual can be linked to every other individual through a relatively short chain of acquaintance relationships. "[T]he first significant empirical study of [the phenomenon] was undertaken by the social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who asked randomly chosen 'starter individuals' to each try forwarding a letter to a designated 'target' person living in the town of Sharon, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston... Roughly a third of the letters eventually arrived at the target, in a median of six steps, and this has since served as basic experimental evidence for the existence of short paths in the global friendship network, linking all (or almost all) of us together in society" (David Easley and John Kleinberg, "Networks, Crowds, and Markets: Reasoning About a Highly Connected World" (2010)). Since the time of Milgram's original research - first published in the charter issue of the magazine Psychology Today - the concept has been validated by, among other things, analysis of Facebook and Twitter data. (See Mark Newman, "Networks" (Oxford 2018), ch. 10.) It is Milgram's work, however, that led John Guare to give the phenomenon its modern name, "six degrees of separation" - actually something of a misnomer since the 44 paths reported in Milgram's original study had a mean length of 5.4 and a median length of 5 (although, to be fair, the modal path length was 6). But the idea, if not the empirical and theoretical research to back it up, long preceded Milgram. In fact, it originated in 1929, in the work offered here, a collection of stories by the Hungarian author Frigyes Karinthy. In the short story "Láncszemek" ("Chain Links"), the narrator explains that "one of us suggested performing the following experiment to prove that the population of the Earth is closer together now than they have ever been before. We should select any person from the 1.5 billion inhabitants of the Earth - anyone, anywhere at all. He bet us that, using no more than five individuals, one of whom is a personal acquaintance, he could contact the selected individual using nothing except the network of personal acquaintances." Karinthy's story "investigated in abstract, conceptual, and fictional terms many of the problems that would captivate future generations of mathematicians, sociologists, and physicists within the field of network theory... " (CTI Reviews: Elementary Statistics). "Without any pretensions to scientific rigor or proof, Karinthy tackled and suggested answers to one of the deep problems in the theory of networks. In 'Chains,' Karinthy argues, as Jules Verne did fifty years earlier, that the world is getting smaller. Unlike Verne in 'Around the World in Eighty Days,' however, Karinthy proposes to demonstrate his thesis not by physical means - circumnavigating the globe - but by a social argument. Printed in black, white, and red aside from the full-color nude of Marilyn Monroe, the "Sweetheart of the Month." Publisher's white wrappers titled in red and printed with an illustration of Monroe. Crease to one corner of front wrapper and a small smudge near the illustration of Monroe. Otherwise, an excellent copy. The very first issue of Playboy, which marks the beginning of both the iconic and controversial men's magazine and the global brand. In conceptualizing the magazine, Hugh Hefner (1926 - 2017) imagined an audience of sophisticated, city-dwelling men who eschewed the outdoor activities that preoccupied most contemporary men's magazines in favor of an evening spent "mixing up cocktails and an hors d'oeuvre or two, putting a little mood music on the photograph, and inviting a female acquaintance for a quiet discussion on Picasso, Nietzsche, jazz, sex" (p. 3). Of course, the magazine also owed much of its popularity to its full-color nude photographs of the "Playmate of the Month" (originally the "Sweetheart of the Month," as here), beginning with Marilyn Monroe in this first issue. Along with the nude features that made the magazine notorious, Playboy has also published the work of prominent writers and activists over the course of its nearly seventy-five-year run. The writing of Vladimir Nabokov, Ian Fleming, Gabriel García Márquez, Margaret Atwood, Kurt Vonnegut, James Baldwin were all featured in the magazine throughout the twentieth century, and the famous "Playboy Interview" featured countless famous subjects including Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lennon and Yoko Ono, David Bowie, Grace Kelly, and the Beatles. The combination of nude photography, high-quality writing and reporting, charming artwork (including the cartoons of Shel Silverstein and Pulitzer winner Jules Feiffer), and shrewd promotion by Hefner drove Playboy to a peak circulation of over five and a half million throughout the 1970s. The magazine eventually expanded into dozens of international editions, about ten of which are still operating digitally or in print, and into clothing, alcohol, and other merchandise labels globally - the Playboy bunny is probably one of the most easily recognizable modern trademarks. Though the magazine's readership has significantly diminished, and print operations have been inconsistent since 2020, Playboy still represents a massive pop cultural force that has, for better or worse, influenced American attitudes around sex and masculinity for the better part of a century. October 1992 was the home stretch of the re-election campaign of President George HW Bush.  Although he had successfully managed and won the war in Iraq, a flagging economy and strong challenge from Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton did not bode well.  And on October 1, Ross Perot, who had announced his candidacy in February and then withdrawn in July, re-entered the campaign, meaning there would be a challenge of a third party likely to draw votes away from Bush.Bush had a close friend and political backer who helped him during campaign season, and whom he appointed to the American Battle Monuments Commission. This backer had a young son with Cystic Fibrosis who had hit a rough patch and needed surgery.During this trying and busy time, Bush took the time out from his hectic schedule to write this sick boy, who was just 14 at the time.  Autograph letter signed, on White House letterhead, Washington, October 2, 1992. Second edition after the first published in Madrid in 1601.Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas published Historia general del Mundo, written in the time of Philip II and divided into three parts, each of which is divided into books, and each book into chapters. The first part covers the years from 1559 to 1574 (although it begins with the marriage of Philip II, before his accession, to Mary I of England in 1554) and was published in Madrid in 1601 and in Valladolid in 1606, after which an improved second edition appeared. The second part covers the period from 1575 to 1585 and was published at the same time as the first, also appearing in a later second edition. Finally, the third part was published in Madrid in 1612, and covers the period from 1585 to 1598, ending with the death of the king. In it the author relates the "tumult, rebellions, acts of sedition and treason, uprisings, wars between peoples, captures of cities and castles, sackings, fires, truces, accords, broken treaties, massacres, deaths of princes, and other events from 1554 to 1598." In 1784, Connecticut passed a law that all slaves born after March 1, 1784, were to be freed before or when they reached the age of 25. In 1790, a group of clergymen, lawyers, and academics formed the Connecticut Society for the Promotion of Freedom and for the Relief of Persons Unlawfully Holden in Bondage to support the law. Yale University president and Congregationalist minister Ezra Stiles, formerly a slave owner, served as the society's first president. Here, Rev. Doctor James Dana reviews the history and extent of slavery in the world. Calling it unjust, unchristian, and against the principles of the American Revolution, he urges abolition. Dana's sermon, and those preached at the Society by Jonathan Edwards Jr., Theodore Dwight, and others, were among the most popular anti-slavery literature from the period. Have they been treated as children of the same family with ourselves? as having the same Father, whose tender mercies are over all his works? as having the same natural prerogatives with other nations? Or have they been treated as outcasts from humanity?... Admitting these just principles, we need not puzzle ourselves with the question, whether a black complexion is a token of God's wrath? In 1758, he was ordained and made the pastor of the Congregational church in Wallingford, Connecticut. That caused a rift in Connecticut Congregationalism, as opponents viewed him as representative of the liberal school in Boston. In 1768, the University of Edinburgh conferred on him a Doctor of Divinity degree. He returned to America, and gained support due to patriotic sermons in the period leading up to the American Revolution. In 1789, he became the pastor of the first church in New Haven, remaining there until 1805. The record of a 4000 mile sailing journey from Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands to below the Antarctic Convergence and on to Anvers Island aboard the Bermudian yacht War Baby. The text is composed of excerpts from the log of Warren Brown, skipper, and quotations from the Irish ice-sailor John Gore Grimes. The photographs of ice and sea are evocative and accomplished. Laid in are three letters from Trissel (the designer) about binding the book, mounting the photographs and delivering the sheets to the binder (Greg Campbell). A wonderful record of blue water sailing at it's best!

Washington DC, 1829. Unbound. Very good. This free-franked stampless letter signed by Senator Mahlon Dickerson measures 15.5” x 9.75” unfolded. It is datelined “Washington 12th Feby. 1829” and was sent to James Parker, the Collector of the Port of New Jersey at Perth Amboy. It bears a circular Washington City postmark dated the same day. In nice shape. The letter reads in part: “The Legislature of New Jersey are about to pass if they have not already passed an act for making the Delaware & Raritan Canal to be suspended . . . until Congress shall subscribe 500,000 Dols for that purpose. . .. I wrote to the Governor the passage of this bill might be considered as an indefinite postponement of the whole concern. It will be years before we can obtain a subscription to the amount under current circumstances. . .. “I will use my utmost endeavors to accomplish the wish of the Legislature on this subject – but I consider the passage of the bill as reported a serious misfortune to the state. . ..” . The intended purpose of the canal was to provide expedited shipping through New Jersey between New York City and Philadelphia, specifically for the transportation of eastern Pennsylvania anthracite coal. Many miles and hundreds of hours would be cut from the existing route from the Pennsylvania coal region down the Delaware, around Cape May, and up the occasionally treacherous Atlantic Ocean coast to New York City. The route was strongly opposed by politically powerful riverbank property owners, especially those who owned mills, who feared increased river traffic would impede their livelihood. Surprisingly, after years of opposition, the legislature granted a charter to the canal a year later; however, most of its funding was required to come from private sources. Just when it appeared all private sources had dried up, Robert F. Stockton pledged his immense family fortune as collateral and work began in earnest. The canal was almost entirely dug by Irish immigrants using hand tools. It wasn’t completed in 1834, at a cost of nearly $3 million (about $90 million in today’s dollars). Its heaviest use occurred between 1850 and 1870 when Pennsylvania coal fueled America’s industrial revolution. At the time of listing, nothing similar is for sale in the trade, the Rare Book Hub shows nothing similar has appeared at auction, and OCLC shows no records of similar institutional holdings. .

Our Wool Market is dull and buyers complain of your American Wools being imperfectly washed and not regular in quality. Your wool dealers having something to learn in the trade … I thank you for a Newspaper. When you write next pray tell me what you think of the Anti-Rent movement, is it possible for that to succeed? Woe to your boasted liberty and constitution if it does and the tyranny of a King or an Aristocracy is better than that of selfish Mob. Do you in the States read Cooper's Novels? His latest series ending with Ravens Nest are occupying attention on this side of the Water." The so-called "Anti-Rent War" of 1839-45 was a movement for land reform in upstate New York, where wealthy "patroons" owned all the land on which Hudson Valley tenants lived, and used feudal leases to maintain control of the region. After a virtual insurrection was suppressed by militia, and leaders of the revolt were tried on charges of riot and conspiracy, delegates from 11 counties met to create an Anti-Rent Party to redress their grievances by political action. As a result, by the time this letter was written in 1846, a new state Constitution had been adopted, adding provisions for tenant's rights, abolishing feudal tenures and leases, and, in effect, dissolving the remaining patroon manors. The "selfish" democratic "Mob" had triumphed.
