Description
1/12/61. Although he is not able to attend due the ramping up of the Civil Rights movement, ""but for this I would be more than happy to serve you.” We are not aware of another letter having reached the market connecting him with this important African American institution, to which he is so closely tiedWhile the Civil Rights movement had been gaining momentum for several years prior, with key events like the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 and the Greensboro sit-ins in 1960, the year 1961 marked a significant escalation and expansion of the movement. Some historians say that 1961 was when the movement truly gained national attention and began to coalesce as a more unified force. In 1961, Martin Luther King Jr. was actively involved in the Movement, delivering speeches, participating in protests, and supporting the cause generally. The was the first year after his return to Atlanta that his activities routinely went beyond his home base there. In May 1961, King's support of the Freedom Rides in Alabama, which aimed to challenge segregation on interstate buses, was crucial. In October, he spoke at Columbia University in New York about the need for an executive order to outlaw segregation in federal programs and other areas of American public life. King visited Seattle in November 1961, and was initially scheduled to speak at First Presbyterian Church, but the invitation was rescinded. He ultimately spoke at the University of Washington, Temple De Hirsch Sinai, Garfield High School, and the Eagles Auditorium. On December 15, King famously spoke at a mass meeting in Albany, Georgia, which began the Albany Movement. That movement aimed to end all forms of racial segregation in the city, making it the first major effort in the modern civil rights era to desegregate an entire community. The next day, King and Ralph Abernathy joined hundreds of black citizens behind bars on charges of parading without a permit and obstructing the sidewalk. King’s involvement attracted national media attention and inspired more people to join the protests. Albany and King entered into an agreement that if King left Albany, the city would release jailed protesters on bail. However, after King left Albany the city failed to uphold the agreement, and protests and subsequent arrests continued into 1962.Thus, with the Albany speech imminent, and many other speaking engagements upcoming, his schedule was full. He had to turn down an invitation to speak at Texas Southern University for April 1962, as there were just too many conflicting obligations. In that month he had arranged a visit to Augusta, Georgia, to speak at Tabernacle Baptist Church alongside other SCLC leaders, and was set to preach a sermon to a large crowd of around 3,500 people in the Princeton University Chapel. His sermon there would focus on the importance of understanding and concern for others in the fight against racial hatred, emphasizing that no race was superior and that both black and white people shared the responsibility to love their fellow humans. In April 1962, King was also involved in the development of the newly formed Gandhi Society for Human Rights, an organization focused on non-violent civil rights activities.Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men.In 1956, Martin Luther King was given the Alpha Award of Honor for “Christian leadership in the cause of first class citizenship for all mankind” at the 50th-anniversary convention of Alpha Phi Alpha. King called the event one of the happiest moments of his life and said that the award gave him “renewed courage to continue in the great and momentous struggle for justice”.Founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, Alpha Phi Alpha was the first fraternity created by African American students. Operating under the guiding principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity, the fraternity counts Thurgood Marshall, W. E. B. Du Bois, and King among its notable members. King joined the Boston Sigma chapter of Alpha in June 1952, while a student at Boston University. Fraternity brothers supported King during the Montgomery bus boycott, sitting behind him at his trial and donating money to the Montgomery Improvement Association.Typed letter signed, on his personal letterhead, Atlanta, December 1, 1961, to Willard C. McCleary of Texas Southern University, who had invited King to speak in Houston in April 1962. “This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter of recent date inviting me to speak in Houston, Texas under the auspices of Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in April, 1962. First, let me say how deeply grateful I am to you and the men of Delta Theta Chapter for extending this invitation. Unfortunately, however, my calendar reveals that I have accepted as many speaking engagements as my schedule will allow for the 1961-62 academic year. But for this I would be more than happy to serve you. Please know that I deeply regret my inability to come.”Letters of King connecting him to his own fraternity and one with such significance in the African American story are very uncommon.

Description
Paris: L. Carteret, 1910. No. 69 OF 100 COPIES printed on Japanese Vellum. 218 x 140 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 1/2"). Two volumes. Preface by René Vallery-Radot. SUPERB CRIMSON CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY CHAMBOLLE-DURU (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed by floral roll with shell cornerpieces, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with central floral sprig enclosed by volutes, gilt titling, gilt-framed pastedowns, beige moiré silk endleaves, all edges gilt. With decorative paper wrappers bound in. Housed in suede-lined, morocco-lipped, red marbled slipcases. WITH 63 ILLUSTRATIONS, ALL IN TWO STATES, by Adolphe LaLauze and engraved by Léon Boisson, 21 of these full-page plates. A breath of rubbing to leather, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY with virtually no signs of use, inside or out. Printed on luxurious Japanese vellum, charmingly illustrated, and opulently bound, this is an insider's look at the court of Versailles under Louis XVI, authored by a close confidante of the queen. Jeanne-Louise-Henriette Genêt Campan (1752–1822) first came to court as teacher to the daughters of Louis XV, and became a lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette when the young princess first arrived from Austria in 1770. She remained in that position until the storming of the Tuileries Palace by revolutionaries in 1792. Her engaging memoir recounts the glittering life that the Dauphine, then Queen, led at Versailles, as well as the terror of the revolution. Though she lost all her material possessions during the Terror, she held onto her life and was able to rebuild her career under Napoleon I, when she became a leader in the education of French girls, heading up a school founded to educate female relatives of recipients of the Legion of Honor. Our bindings come from one of the finest workshops active in France during the Belle Époque. A rough contemporary of, and certainly the equal in technique to, binders like Trautz, Marius Michel père, Lortic, and Cuzin, the elder Chambolle served his apprenticeship under Hippolyte Duru and later formed a partnership with him. Chambolle's son continued the business when his father retired in 1898, and in "Modern Bookbindings," Sarah Prideaux says of her contemporary, "Chambolle most worthily continues the traditions associated with the name of his father. As an interpreter of the past, he has a place apart and almost untouched by the main revolutionary movement that has penetrated nearly every atelier in Paris, and modified, if not overturned, its inherited traditions. To him are confided the classics of former times, which he clothes in the styles appropriate to them, keeping to a simplicity of ornamentation which reveals great taste and feeling for composition." Chambolle has done just that here, creating bindings that would have looked at home on Madame Campan's bookshelf..

Description
London & New York: The London Printing and Publishing Company, [ca. 1860]. 283 x 217 mm. (11 x 8 1/2"). Two volumes.. FINE PUBLISHER'S PEBBLE-GRAIN DARK BROWN MOROCCO, ELABORATELY GILT, covers with a thick gilt-tooled medallion encircling an image of Hogarth sitting in a chair and holding a palette and brushes, at the bottom of the medallion a gothic capital with a bust, books, and palette, each corner with a lacy floral garland in the shape of an "L," all this framed by a thick and thin gilt rule, raised bands, spines ruled and decorated in gilt, gilt lettering, all edges gilt. WITH 150 STEEL ENGRAVINGS (on 145 plates) BY WILLIAM HOGARTH, all with original tissue guards. Front free endpaper of volume I with unmarked ex-libris on a decorative piece of paper; titles with blue ink stamp of J. B. Bennett of Cincinnati, Ohio. One spine band slightly rubbed, trivial wear to the corners, but the bindings otherwise virtually perfect. Volume II with two very small tears to gutter of frontispiece (and its tissue guard), hinges of that same volume with paper covering partly gone, otherwise only trivial imperfections. A REMARKABLY WELL-PRESERVED SET. This is a very fine copy of a substantial set featuring the art of a man whose name is nearly synonymous with social satire. William Hogarth's persistently fascinating engravings are here accompanied by explanatory text commissioned by the artist's widow Jane in 1766 and supplied by the Rev. John Trusler (1735-1820), described by DNB as "an enthusiastic and fearless compiler of others' works." He provides commentary on some of Hogarth's popular series of engravings, including "The Harlot's Progress," "The Rake's Progress," "Election," "Marriage a-la-Mode," "Industry and Idleness," and "Four Stages of Cruelty," plus a number of single works, among them "Sleeping Congregation" and "Southwark Fair." One of the most popular artists of the period, William Hogarth (1697-1764) is today considered to be the first great English painter. Someone who learned to draw from real life, rather than through copying the masters, he is remembered for group portraits such as "The Wedding," for satirical works such as "The Denunciation," and especially for the popular engravings noted above. In addition to his visual offerings, he also contributed to the profession of artist, pushing through what is still referred to as "Hogarth's Act," a statute that protects the copyright of an artist's original designs. Trusler was one of the most enterprising and eccentric figures in the British publishing world. A former priest, he launched an entrepreneurial career (said to be successful) by advertising ready-made sermons (one shilling each), printed in cursive type to look like manuscripts; later, as a printer and publisher, he issued a wide range of books on everything from etiquette to law to get-rich schemes. Finding one edition or another of Hogarth's engravings is not at all difficult, but finding a glowing copy that seems almost untouched--like the present one--is quite difficult..

Pagination: [20], 375, [1] pages (lacks p. 10). Collation: a(6), b(4), A(5 of 6, lacking A5), B-Z(6), AA-GG(6), HH(8). Title and rear verso leaf with woodcut printer’s device of the virtue of Peace, inscribed Pax, holding olive branch within cartouche border with masks. Title verso with full-page woodcut of the muse of architecture, raising ruler in right hand. The Plantin woodcut device “Labore et Constantia” printed in red ink supplied and mounted on blank verso of b4. Woodcut illustrations throughout of diagrams and geometric graphs of architectural interest (cross-sections of classical buildings, molds, and friezes) and other mathematical lines and planes, also including illustrations for the Vitruvian man (p. 89), the Venetian lagoon (p. 204), laborers at a hydraulic mill (pp. 348-349), parts of an organ (p. 351), and a racing charioteer (p. 353), all after Andrea Palladio (1508–1580). Woodcut four-line chapter initials throughout. Dedicated to Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517–1586). Text in Roman, Italic and some Greek. Contemporary limp vellum with manuscript title to spine VITRUVIUS CUM COMMENT BARBARI; (lacking ties, top of spine chipped, book block partly loose in binding; some intermittent foxing and stains, wormhole through text block affecting some text; otherwise good). This copy with a curious addition of a 16th-century doodle of a hybrid bearded man with animal body and long tail to title page. Later inscriptions with names on rear leaf, some smudged, but “Mexico” and “1766” visible. Another Spanish inscription mentioning Mexico again on rear pastedown. Unidentified branded ownership mark on top edges, possibly of a crowned heart. Second Venetian edition of Vitruvius’s ten books De Architectura, with Latin commentary by the Italian humanist Daniele Barbaro (1514–1570) and printed by Francesco de Franceschi in 1567. Barbaro, a well-known Venetian patrician and patron of the arts, made editions of Vitruvius’s works in Italian (Venice: Francesco Marcolini, 1556) and Latin, as here, a revised edition in smaller format. According to Barbaro, his commentary took over nine years to complete. The work is a landmark contribution to Vitruvian studies of the Renaissance; many of his peers regarded Barbaro as an “intellectual light” of his time and his architectural treatises useful in current practice. The illustrations in this volume, including the famous Vitruvian man, were the result of a fruitful collaboration with Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508–1580), begun probably in the early 1540s. Together, their development of the illustrated architectural book greatly impacted the study of classic architecture and design aesthetics in the Renaissance. This revised edition is uncommon outside of the usual institutions.

His seminal biographies, including "Eminent Victorians" (1918) and "Queen Victoria" (1921), revolutionized the genre by introducing a novel style characterized by wit, irreverence, and psychological insight. "Eminent Victorians" dissected the lives of notable figures from the Victorian era, offering a candid and often satirical portrayal that shattered prevailing myths and exposed the complexities of their characters. Similarly, "Queen Victoria" provided a nuanced examination of the iconic monarch, challenging conventional perceptions and shedding light on her personal struggles and political influence. This work, Books and Characters, is an in-depth history of English and French literature, with an emphasis on Racine, Shakespeare, and Rousseau.

Description
Westport, Connecticut and London: Greenwood Press, 2008. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Part of the Daily Life Through History Series / American Soldiers' Lives. "Military history is usually about history's great captains or campaigns ... What is often lost in the great stories of battles and generals is the daily life of the soldiers and junior officers who occupied, in the words common at the end of the cold war, 'the tip of the spear.' What was war like from their perspective? What did they think of their military service? What was their training like? How did they and their families live? ... These and many more questions, often overlooked, are essential to understanding the experience of war. This book looks at this period and asks the simple question, What was the soldier's experience at the end of the cold war?" (preface). Size: 8vo. Green illustrated glossy paper covered boards with beige title to front board and to spine. Pristine interior with illustrations. Index, 191 pages. Military History. Fine.MIL/042508.
