Description
London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1929. First English language edition. Fine/Near Fine. First impression, in the first state jacket with "German Opinions" on the front flap. A Fine copy. Publisher's tan buckram, spine and front board stamped in green; original dust jacket; chemise and slipcase. Dust jacket unclipped (priced "7s. 6d. net"); very minor edgewear with a few small chips and short tears; small closed tear to rear panel; uncommonly bright. An extraordinary example of this important World War I novel. All Quiet on the Western Front is Remarque's elegy to the generation that had been "destroyed by war, even though it might have escaped its shells." The novel was first serialised in the Vossische Zeitung in late 1928 and published in German as Im Westen nichts Neues in January 1929. This first edition in English was published in London three months before the American edition. A remarkable bestseller, the novel sold 2.5 million copies in twenty-two languages in its first eighteen months in print (Falls, War Books, p. 293). It was adapted into a critically acclaimed film, directed by Lewis Milestone, in 1930. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
