Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1859. 1859, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864. Hardcover. Covers VG (rebindings); Front and last pages of each volume are covered in crude preservation tissue, which has caused some extreme wrinkling with age, but could potentially be removed. Contents mostly VG-/Good with a bit of age toning here and there, occasional light foxing, as with many period newpapers there are a few printers errors the worst being creases to the lithos page 321 of 1861 and the broadsheet illustration page 792 of 1864. There are several smaller closed tears throughout most of which do not affect the text block, but there are a few intrusions into the text or plates in each volume, but only in only in a few circumstances is information missing or badly damaged: Page 709 1861 full sheet foldout map has a lot of tearing and damage to the center crease, Page 123 1862 has a piece torn out of the top corner with some missing text and plate opposite, Page 33-36 1863 has had a large chunck of the bottom 1/4th torn out with various incomplete scraps of the missing pages laid in. Definetly a reference copy, but all around still in good condition with a very small percentage of flaws.. Utilitarian academic cloth binding, with each volume containing a range of years. 5 volumes: April 9, 1859 - March 31, 1860. April 7, 1860 - August 3, 1861. August 10, 1861 - January 24, 1863. January 31, 1863 - January 9, 1864. January 16, 1864 December 31, 1864. 600-800 pages per volume. Heavy and oversize and will require extra postage. Includes scarcer 1859 and 1860 issues documenting the lead up to the US Civil War continuing through emancipation, with news articles, illustrations of battles, military personnel, devastation, etc. Also includes the latest fiction (Wilkie Collins, Thackeray, etc., Paris fashions, news of the world, and advertisements. The January 1861 issue continues with Chapter 10 of Dickens' Great Expectations and his Christmas Story, A Message from the Sea. A later issue includes the two maps prepared specially for Harper's Weekly of the United States and the Southern States. As this is a bound copy (no longer folded), the halves of each map are separated by a few pages. The 1862 Volume includes the wreck of the "City of New York" from the Burnside Expedition. The 1863 volume contains an interesting 2-page illustration of Emancipation Past/Future, the Sioux War, the Rush Street Bridge accident in Chicago, etc. The volume for 1864 covers the late and current kings of Denmark, the Brooklyn Fair in Aid of the Sanitary Commission (with a two-page illustration), and a facsimile of a photograph of the moon (2-page spread) taken by Dr. Henry Draper's telescope (along with corresponding article).

Description
Leipzig: Typographia Giesecke & Devrient [for] Emilio Biel, Portugal, 1880. 400 x 305 mm. (15 3/4 x 12"). 2 p.l., LVI, 375, [1], XCII pp. IMPOSING CONTEMPORARY BLACK CALF, upper cover with sunken central panel framed by gilt and blind rules, raised gothic window frame with gilt tooling, large ship embossed and painted at center, gilt lettering above and below, lower cover gilt-stamped "Companhia Portugueza Editora / Porto," raised bands, spine panels with blind-stamped floral frames, gilt lettering, patterned endpapers, apparently later hinges, all edges gilt and elaborately gauffered. In a later green felt-lined cloth slipcase. Illustrated half title, engraved portrait frontispiece, dedication, and portrait of the dedicatee, engraved decorative half frames at beginning of each Canto and tailpiece at the end, 10 section titles printed in colors, and 19 plates, all with original tissue guards. Front pastedown with modern color-printed bookplate dated 1980. ◆Spine slightly sunned, leather with a few minor scrapes, scratches, and other small signs of wear, plates variously foxed because of paper used (usually mildly or moderately, though occasionally more noticeably); nevertheless, a striking volume with its main attractions (the front cover and shimmering gauffered edges) retaining all of their appeal. This is an impressive commemorative edition of the masterpiece of the Portuguese language's greatest poet, in a binding that celebrates that country's history of exploration. First published in 1572, the epic poem "Os Lusíadas" relates the adventures of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (ca. 1460s - 1524), the first European to reach India by sea. Sailing via the Cape of Good Hope in 1497, he established the first ocean route from Europe to India, landing in Calicut in 1498. His navigation skills provided Portugal with more than bragging rights for accomplishing a feat attempted for decades at the cost of hundreds of sailors' lives: the Portuguese now had unprecedented access to the spices of the East, and came to dominate that market. A master of verse whose skills have been compared to those of Shakespeare, Milton, and Dante, Luís de Camões (ca. 1524/25 - 1580) also had firsthand experience of the voyage: he travelled to India on the carrack São Bento in 1553. He composed parts of this work while dwelling in a cave in Macau, and managed to save the manuscript when he was shipwrecked in the Mekong delta. After 17 years in the East, Camões returned to Portugal and completed "Os Lusíadas." When it was published two years later, he was rewarded with a royal pension. The binding here depicts a Portuguese caravel--the small, very maneuverable ship Portugal's explorers used in the Age of Discovery--at full sail on choppy seas, in a sunken space framed within a Moorish-style arch bearing the Portuguese Coat of Arms. Dedicated to Dom Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, this luxurious production was issued to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Camões' death..

About very good.
Description
Peiping, China: June 4, 1936. About very good.. [2]pp. Folio. Old fold lines, minor wear, a few contemporary annotations. Letter written by a nurse visiting China, relating her itinerary in China which includes numerous trips to local hospitals and leper colonies. Minnie Goodnow was a registered nurse who served in France during the Great War. After her return to the U.S., she was a nursing administrator in several hospitals before embarking on this journey. She writes: "I am having a trip that is no less than wonderful. I had three objectives in mind for it, -- to see the world, or some bits of it; to see hospitals and learn something of what was being done in nursing education in several lands; and to see something of missions at first hand. I'm doing all three of them -- superficially, but with great profit to myself. ... I went up to Chiengmai with some of the mission people, staid with Dr. and Mrs. Cort, saw the wonderful leper colony, and had a marvellous time. Here in China I have had a steady diet of missions and hospitals and done sight-seeing, too." She goes on to relate her itinerary, which includes trips to Shanghai, Nanking, Hankow, and Changsha, as well as a stay at a Buddhist monastery -- "Can you fancy the thrill I got from spending the night on top of a sacred mountain, in a Buddhist monastery, in the heart of China!" She continues: "Miss Stephenson went with me to two 'country' hospitals -- to complete -- or add to -- my education! They were those at Siaokan and Tiean, and were most interesting. I also saw the old-fashioned leper asylum at Tiean, which is on the way to becoming new-fashioned. Then I came here to Peiping, where I have been for nearly four weeks. I am giving a short course in History of Nursing and doing sight-seeing, also meeting people." She tells her reader that after China she plans to travel on to Indian with a similar mission. An interesting look into the culture of American travel and mission work in China in the 1930s.
