First edition of James Harrison's eight volume compendium of important eighteenth century periodicals with essays by such figures as Samuel Johnson, Richard Steele, Joseph Addison, George Lord Lyttelton, Launcelot Temple, Isaac Bickerstaff, and Adam Fitz-Adam among others. As is evident in the reprinting of these essays, letters, and newspaper issues, the eighteenth century was a time of great knowledge, exploration, rapidly growing technology and expanding archives of information made possible by advances in the printing press. Bound in contemporary leather in generally very good condition. Interior pages have spotting and foxing scattered throughout the eight volumes. An occasional loose page. Still very good. Volume I: Samuel Johnson's "The Rambler" in four volumes with 463 pages; and George Lyttleton's "Letters from a Persian in 81 pages. Volume II: "The Adventurer" - a newspaper with 140 issues that continued Samuel Johnson's prose with 366 pages. Volume III: "The Tatler" written by Isaac Bickerstaff in four volumes with 641 pages. Valenti Angelo (1897-1982) was a highly-regarded designer, illuminator, and decorator of books over a career that spanned decades, doing much of his early work for the Grabhorn Press and the Book Club of California; he also printed his own books in extremely limited editions under the imprints of "The Golden Cross Press" and "The Press of Valenti Angelo". This publication of The Book Club of California celebrates Angelo's fiftieth anniversary as a printer, and is a detailed collection of his work up to 1975. Many of the facsimiles in the book are printed in colour and some are even hand-coloured by Angelo himself; he contributed greatly to the design of this book. Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) was an American playwright and novelist renowned for exploring universal themes of human connection and resilience. 1898. London: William Heinemann, 1898. 4 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated Autumn 1897. Original dark grey cloth with life preserver in gilt. First English Edition of Conrad's third novel (the slightly earlier American edition was titled THE CHILDREN OF THE SEA); 1,519 copies were printed, and the actual date of publication was in late 1897. This tale was the novel which he saw as a turning point in his imagination and in his career... [It] was to shift his concern from Malay subjects to a much deeper and more intense concern with life and death, the mythical sea and the transient individual, survival itself, themes which in ensuing years would become his major subject matter [Karl]. Conrad planned THE NIGGER to be a short story, to accompany several others he was writing (which would become TALES OF UNREST) -- first referring to it as consisting of "25,000 words at least," six days later projecting it to consist of 30,000, and ultimately bringing it in at well over 50,000. This copy has the ad catalogue in the earliest state (16 pp dated Autumn 1897), and is in Supino's binding state "A" (and Cagle's "a") -- with the HEINEMANN spine imprint in non-uniform large letters (no definite priority established). It is a very good copy, with some wear at the spine ends and a faint crack in the spine; atypically, the brittle laid endpapers are not cracked. Supino A3.7.0 binding state A, and Plate 4 (this copy, with Supino's notation on the front endpaper); Cagle A3.c.1, binding state a. S. l.: New Times, 1952. First Edition. Very good. Issued as a supplement to the "New Times" journal; 10 1/4 x 7 3/4; pp. [1], 4-24; beige wraps, printed in black; edges of wraps a bit brittle, with a few small nicks and chips; age-toning and a few spots to margins; in about very good- condition. The Katyn Massacre reffered to a series of mass executions of Polish officers and intelectuals in the Spring of 1940, following the Soviet invasion of Poland, in several prison camps, although it was named after the region of the Katyn Forest, where mass graves were first discovered. Investigations into the murders were conducted by various countries and agencies and it was determined that the massacre was initiated and carried out by the NKVD (the Soviet Secret Police). The Soviets vehemently denied their involvment and claimed the Nazis had killed those 20 000+ Poles. It was not until the early 1990s, when Russia finally accepted responsibilty for the executions, but refused to identify them as war crimes. In the meantime, in 1951 and 1952, a new, US Congressional investigation was initiated, led by the so called Madden Committee, which yet again confirmed that the NKVD had murdered the Polish prisoners. The current statement was issued by the outraged Soviet Government, protesting the reopening of the case, the investigations, and the allegations, and resupplying the facts of their own discoveries, which proved the Nazi's responsibility for the murders.
