Description
1981. First Edition. Signed. ADDAMS, Charles. Creature Comforts. New York: Simon & Schuster, (1981). Tall, slim quarto, original half orange cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket. $4700.First edition, first printing, of this collection of Addams’ cartoons, inscribed to actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and his wife, with a pen-and-ink drawing to the fly-leaf depicting Addams’ famed character Uncle Fester flashing himself under a rain coat; appearing as a tattoo on Uncle Fester’s chest is the inscription, “To Marydee [in red ink] and Douglas [in green ink] with Love [in blue ink] Chas Addams 82 [in black ink].” Uncle Fester wears boxer shorts striped in a bright red and green.""Addams specialized in a bizarre brand of comedy founded on the inexplicable in nature and the antisocial in humanity… Although he sold cartoons to many magazines during the 1930s and 1940s, Addams is most closely associated with The New Yorker, where his macabre sense of humor became a fixture. That magazine bought its first Addams cartoon in 1935"" (ANB). Novelist Wilfrid Sheed remembers Addams as ""a tall, laconic man, with a head he might have drawn himself and a voice straight out of Casket and Sunnyside, the mortician's manual."" Addams' prototypical American family, described by Sheed as ""an American classic, a Halloween version of Norman Rockwell and Grant Wood,"" inspired a hit television series and two movies. Price sticker to rear panel of dust jacket. With armorial bookplate of recipient Douglas Fairbanks Jr., famed ""actor, producer, administrator, bon vivant and Anglo-American ambassador,"" whose many films include Morning Glory (1933) with Katharine Hepburn and Prisoner of Zenda (1937). After a brief marriage to Joan Crawford, during WWII Fairbanks enlisted in the Navy, becoming ""the first American officer to command a British flotilla of raiding craft during a commando operation."" Using his ""prestige and administrative skills as a volunteer for the United Nations… his contributions won him many honors, including Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire"" (New York Times).Interior fine; light wear to binding extremities. Light wear to extremities of bright dust jacket with shallow chipping to spine head. A near-fine copy with exceptional provenance, scarce with a sketch by Addams.

Description
Hollywood/New York: The Edward Small Company. Fair. [1926]. First Edition. Flexible boards. (flexible leatherette-overed boards; no dust jacket, as issued) [extensive white paint staining at edges of front cover, with some impact on the interior; it appears that somebody once used this book to support something that was being painted white; why do people do such things?]. (B&W portrait photographs) A directory (like the title says) of actors, actresses, directors, and writers who were under the management of Edward Small (1891-1977), who up until this time (1926) was primarily an agent; he had established his agency in New York in the mid-1910s, and in 1917 set up shop in Hollywood. (The title page of this directory indicates that he also had offices in London, Paris, and Berlin.) It was in 1926, though, that he began to shift his focus to the production of motion pictures, and over the next 45 years or so was one of the most successful and prolific of Hollywood-based independent producers. Judging from this volume, he had a pretty extensive roster of talent -- there are full-page portraits here of over 100 performers, each with their three most recent credits -- although most were character actors rather than top-line talent. (Some of the more notable names are John Gilbert, Nita Naldi, Baby Peggy, Lionel Barrymore, and Francis X. Bushman -- although those who are steeped in the history of the American silent film will recognize many more. Two more who caught my eye the sisters Eva and Jane Novak, who appear on facing pages; this volume was acquired from a relative of Jane Novak, so it can reasonably be assumed that it belonged to her.) Only a relative handful of directors and writers are included, notably Joseph Henabery (whose name is misspelled) and John M. Stahl. The firm's motto (at the bottom of the front cover and title page) was apparently "Service Plus Integrity." There's also a quote from Edward Small inside that pretty much sums up the agent mentality: "Personality is a Commodity." .
