Description
[no place]: [no publisher], 1940. Very Good. Two albums containing black and white photographs of members of the 442nd Infantry Regiment, a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei) who fought in World War II. The regiment was formed in response to the War Department's call for volunteers to form the segregated Japanese American army combat unit, initially comprising 2,686 volunteers from Hawaii and another 1,500 drawn from mainland U.S. internment camps. Many of the soldiers from the continental U.S. had families in internment camps while they fought abroad. Original string-bound boards, measuring 11"x8.25 and 9.5"x6.5. Very Good, with wear to bindings. Dampstaining to rear cover of larger album, with associated bleeding onto final rear blank unused sheet of larger album. Indentation to front cover of smaller album. These albums depict portraits of servicemen, many identified in inked captions below, as well as scenes of soldiers encamped in the field, interacting with members of other battalions, or at rest. The captions in both albums appear to be in the same hand. The larger album includes 51 photos of various sizes, of which 20 have notes about the identity of the depicted individuals. The first photo depicts a plaque dedicated to the 442nd, acknowledging the rescue of the 1st Battalion, 141 Infantry Regiment, in Biffontaine, France. Also laid in are several loose photos without identification. The smaller album is captioned on six of the 22 mounted photos, along with three loose photos and two French postcards. The record of the Japanese Americans serving in the 442nd and in the Military Intelligence Service helped change the minds of some anti-Japanese American critics in the U.S. In Hawaii, the veterans were welcomed home as heroes by a grateful community that had supported them through those trying times. However, the unit's exemplary service and many decorations did not change the attitudes of the general population in the continental U.S. towards people of Japanese ancestry after World War II. Veterans came home to signs that read "No Japs Allowed" and "No Japs Wanted", the denial of service in shops and restaurants, and the vandalism of their homes and property.

Description
1678. First Edition. Signed. WALTON, Izaak. The Life of Dr. Sanderson, Late Bishop of Lincoln… To which is added, Some short Tracts or Cases of Conscience, written by said Bishop. London: Richard Marriott, 1678. Octavo, 20th-century full dark green morocco gilt, raised bands, brown morocco spine labels, all edges gilt; housed in a custom chemise and pull-off box. $6500.First edition of the last of Walton's four famed biographies, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Sanderson, inscribed by him on the title page, ""For Mr. John Millington, I. W., "" with a number of corrections in the text in Walton's hand. Handsomely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe.Best known for his classic work on fly-fishing, The Compleat Angler (1653), Walton is also celebrated for the four biographies he wrote on Sir Henry Wotton, John Donne, Richard Hooker and Robert Sanderson. ""More than most authors [Walton] lives in his writings, which are the pure expression of a kind, humorous, and pious soul in love with nature, while the expression itself is unique for apparent simplicity which is really studied art. His character is no less apparent in his biographies than in his Angler"" (DNB). Sanderson (1587-1663) took orders in 1611 and quickly rose within the church, appointed a royal chaplain in 1631. Charles I held him in particularly high regard; Walton reports in this work that Charles I said of him ""I carry my ears to hear other preachers, but I carry my conscience to hear Mr. Sanderson."" His appointment as professor of Divinity at Oxford was barred during the English Civil War, but after the Restoration in 1660 he was appointed Bishop of Lincoln. With ink corrections in two different contemporary hands, one of which is clearly that of Walton. The corrections in Walton's hand are found on b2r, b5v, b7v, c3r, d5v, d8r, h7v and 1lr, all of which correspond to errors listed on the Errata page. Pforzheimer 1053. The recipient of this copy, John Millington, was executor of the estate of Anthony Farindon, minister of St. Mary Magdalen, Milk Street; at one point he contacted Walton to propose that he finish Farindon's uncompleted work on theologian John Hales (an offer Walton appears to have declined). From the collection of publisher and bookseller William Pickering, appearing in the sale of his library at Sotheby's in 1854, and later from the collection of American industrialist and philanthropist John Gribbel, with his bookplate.Interior clean; very handsomely bound. An exceptional presentation copy.

Description
New York: William De Lacy, Steam Printer, 1881. Folding plate, woodcut illustrations. 31, [1]pp. 8vo. Original wrappers, minor wear and spotting. Provenance: J. J. McCormick Steamship and Exchange Agent (inked stamp on title and upper wrapper). Folding plate, woodcut illustrations. 31, [1]pp. 8vo. Founded in 1850, the Inman Line was one of the three largest 19th-century British passenger shipping companies on the North Atlantic. By 1870, Inman landed more passengers in New York than any other line, mostly catering to emigrants departing from Liverpool in steerage class. The present promotional piece, written from the first hand experience of a passenger, paints a pretty picture of the crossing aboard the ship City of Brussels, with plenty to eat, singing and dancing, clean rooms, medical services and even the introduction of electric light. Pages 27- 31 include the process once the ship arrives in New York: "In single file the newcomers filter into the enormous rotunda, and the courteous police officer in charge ushers them towards the registering clerk. Here each one is asked his or her na,e, place of birth and destination, the replied being entered into an enormous ledger. Then comes the question of departure, trains, boats, etc. and the queries uttered in French, Italian, Irish, Danish, Finnish, Russian, and fifty different dialects, are briefly but courteously responded to. Those who propose remaining in New York emerge into the Battery Park, and are cared for by the agents of the Inman line..." As for those not remaining in New York, "our emigrants march to the railway depot, enter cars, and - Go West! In a few brief months the almighty dollar rolls across the pond, and the ear ones left behind follow in the footsteps of the pioneers." OCLC records only a single example at the Peabody Essex Museum.
