Description
New York: Random House, 1947 Illustrated by Dr. Seuss with alternating full-page color and black and white illustrations. First edition, first printing, with open-mouthed fish to front board; in its first issue dust jacket, with "250/250" to front flap. Publisher's green boards, with fish illustration in blind to front board, lettered in blind, and color pictorial endpapers; in its original wraparound pictorial dust jacket, with a fish eyeing a worm on a hook to front panel, lettered in red. Near fine book, with light fading to spine, a touch of rubbing to spine ends, and a tiny bit of staining to fore-edge of textblock; very good unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to spine ends, and some edgewear, most notably a couple of closed tears and some crease-marks to top edge of rear panel. Overall, an excellent copy of this early Dr. Seuss title. In this Dr. Seuss book, a farmer tells a boy named Marco, who's fishing at McElligot's Pool, that he'll have no luck catching fish there. In response, Marco fantasizes about all of the fantastical fish that he might catch there if he's patient enough. McElligot's Pool was the first book by Dr. Seuss to feature watercolors, though only half of the pages were published in color to save money. The book - Seuss's first in seven years - was a success and earned him his first Caldecott Honor. Interestingly, the book's main character, Marco, also stars in Seuss's first book, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street (1937). . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Dr. Seuss.

Description
New York: Arthur A. Levine Books, 1999 With title page vignette by Mary GrandPré. First American edition, Advance Reader's Edition. Publisher's diamond patterned wrappers, with front wrapper colored purple and black, spine colored red and black, and white lettering. Very good, with very light wear to spine ends and panel edges, a hint of scuffing to front wrapper, and light spotting to edges. Overall, a sturdy copy. Errington AA4(c). A pivotal novel in the series, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban was published before the series reached the level of popularity and cult following that it has today, but still managed to reach critical acclaim. In his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter and his friends search for the villainous outlaw Sirius Black after his escape from the wizard prison Azkaban. Unlike the first two books in the series, The Prisoner of Azkaban does not end with a cut-and-dry triumph over evil, but rather begins to pose the question of how the media and popular perception affect whether someone is considered good or bad- a notion that recurs and becomes increasingly central to the storyline as the series progresses.. First American Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good. Illus. by GrandPre, Mary. Advanced Reading Copy (ARC).

Description
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1981 With a foreword by John Fowles. Limited first edition. One of 350 numbered copies (total limitation of 360), signed by Fowles and Pinter, this being number 161. Publisher's navy cloth, spine lettered in gilt, and green endpapers; in publisher's red slipcase, with white label, lettered in green and black. Fine book; fine slipcase. Overall, a sharp and perfectly clean copy. The French Lieutenant's Woman follows the relationship between former governess Sarah Woodruff and amateur naturalist Charles Smithson in the 1860s. Fowles used his knowledge of classic literature to enhance the conventional romantic plot and was influenced by the postmodernist movement. Uniquely, Fowles includes three dramatically different endings in the book, each explained by the narrator, who at this point has intervened and become a character. In 1981, The French Lieutenant's Woman was adapted by the great playwright and screenwriter Harold Pinter into a successful film, which starred Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep. In Fowles' foreword, he details some of the obstacles that had to be overcome in order to finally bring the book to the screen, and Pinter's ingenuity in adapting the work. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards, and Meryl Streep received particular praise for her dual-roles in the film - as the Victorian Sarah Woodruff and modern-day Anna. . Signed by Author. Limited First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine.

Description
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1857. First Edition in English. Five uniform octavo volumes (23cm). In the publisher's deep green grain-patterned cloth, blind-embossed on covers, titled in gilt on spines; printed terra-cotta endpapers; xxxvi, 578, [24]ads.; xi, 676; xi, 635; xiv, 641, [24]ads.; xii, 694pp; text illus; fifteen folding maps; one folding woodcut; 60 inserted leaves of lithographic plates after J.M. Bernatz, all tinted. Binder's ticket (Westley's) at base of rear pastedown in first volume. A superb set in the scarce original cloth, with expert repairs to hinges on three volumes and some inconspicuous strengthening to cloth at crown of volume I; complete and quite fresh internally, with the plates vivid and free of foxing or soil; Very Good or better. Printed front and rear endpapers contain publisher's advertisements, including full-page ad for M'Clure's "Discovery of the North-West Passage" on rear pastedown of vols I & II. Engraved bookplate of C.G. Hodgson, Sydney, to the first two volumes. "One of the greatest of all travel narratives, rich in meticulous detail and exceptional for its accuracy, it survives as a major source book for the history and geography of sub-Saharan West Africa" (HOWGEGO IV:62). Barth also devoted considerable attention to the contemporary West African slave trade, noting in his Preface: "...There can be no doubt that the most horrible topic connected with slavery is slave-hunting...hence it was necessary that I should become acquainted with the real state of these most important features of African society, in order to speak clearly about them...I shall be able, in the third volulme of my narrative, to lay before the public...the domestic happiness of a considerable portion of the human race...as well as the wanton and cruel manner in which this happiness is destroyed, and its peaceful abodes changed into desolation." There is some question whether the work was first published in German or English; Howgego asserts the latter; Abbey claims that this "is a translation from the German edition." Gay appears agnostic on the question, noting only that both German and English editions were published. In any case, a German edition appeared the same year ("Reisen und Entedkungen in Nord- und Central-Afrika in den Jahren...;" Gotha: 1857-58), if not simultaneously, then in short succession; a second English edition appeared in the same year and a cheap edition in 1859. The early owner of this set, C.G. Hodgson, appears to have been a prominent dentist in New South Wales at the turn of the 20th century; his library must have been sizeable, as books with his bookplate have appeared regularly at auction over the past century. Few sets in original cloth have appeared in commerce; this is a beautifully-preserved example. ABBEY TRAVEL 274. GAY 207.

Description
Kansas City, Missouri: Lynch & Company, 1980. Minor toning, dust soiling.. An early analysis of a new kind of chemotherapy, "Neo-Merphenol", promoted by Lynch & Company as "A comparatively new, safe, and efficient weapon" that may be used by physicians "to help them in their great humanitarian warfare against disease, suffering, and death" (p. 8). Published for scientists and physicians, not the general public, it discusses the current thought on chemotherapy in scientific detail. Chemotherapy was first developed in the early part of the twentieth century, when it was discovered that toxic mustard gas used in the first World War could be adapted to have a chemo-therapeutic application in treating lymphoma. Four-fold pamphlet (7" by 3.25" folded), printed both sides, paginated.

Various: Various, 1880. Very good. Seventeen items - trade cards, a leaflet, and a brochure, n. d. (1880s); various sizes and formats; chromolithographed illustrations; some in near fine condition, with very minor wear, others with residue to verso from being removed from a scrapbook; overall in very good condition. A lovely collection from the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, it showcased the big names of perfumery and the trendy scents of the times. - The DeVilbiss Manufacturing Company. Toilet Requisites [Trade Brochure]. London: The DeVilbiss Mfg. Co., n. d. (ca 1913). Brochure; half-fold then double-parallel fold, 8 pannels, 9 1/2 x 7 unfolded; cream stock, illustrated with monochrome images on orange background; a few small cuts to edges of folds. Dr. Allen DeVilbiss (1840 - 1917) was an inventor and Toledo's first ear, nose, and throat specialist. While treating patients in the rural communities around the city, the doctor was dissatisfied with the lack of a device for easy application of medicines to people's throats and noses. In 1888, he developed an atomizer with a hollow rubber ball, a metal jar, and a small tube for the quick dispersal and coating of the throats with drugs. His invention was so successful that by 1890, he retired from his medical practice and founded the DeVilbiss Manufacturing Company. He would soon branch into manufacturing perfume atomizers (perfumizers), and the first practical, compressed-air, paint spray guns for the automotive industry, protective coating for military equipment, etc. By the early 20th century, DeVilbiss had branches in Toledo, New York, London (where the current sample catalog was printed), and several other big cities. The brochure listed and beautifully-illustrated 9 nebulizers, atomizers, and perfumizers with inventory numbers and short descriptions. - B. D. Baldwin & Co. This Cotton is Perfumed with the New Odor Tri-Rose Bouquet...(Handkerchief Perfume Sample). Chicago: B. D. Baldwin & Co., n. d. (ca 1876 - tentative date obtained from the address of the manufacturer at the time of printing). Small leaflet with a pink cotton ball affixed to it; 4 3/4 x 4; speckled gray sheet, printed in black in several fancy fonts; faint, horizontal fold line; small crease to lower left corner. B. D. Baldwin & Co. was founded in 1873 in Chicago by Benson D. Baldwin (1841 - 1917) - a renowned pioneer perfumer in the US. He imported and created himself over 60 perfumes in the late 19th- and early 20th- centuries. The card advertised the newest company product, offering a small, perfumed cotton ball and proudly proclaiming: "It is without a doubt the finest Handkerchief Perfume ever sold for the price. Very Fragrant and Very Lasting. Try a sample bottle, it costs 25 cts. only. Handkerchiefs perfumed gratis at the Stand in the Gallery." - Fifteen trade cards, various sizes, including a die-cut in the shape of an artist's pallette, advertising Hoyt's German Cologne, Austens Forest Flower Cologne, Wana-Ranee Perfume, Rich Mikado Cologne, Eastman's Perfumes, Armant's Perfumes, Bazin and Sargent's Floral Cologne, Bowker's Odeur Du Bois Perfume, Barnard and Co. Perfumers, and Solon Palmer Perfumer. The most interesting card was, in fact, a programme for a performance of Anthony and Ellis' Ideal Uncle Tom's Cabin, perfumed with Hoyt's German Cologne. Arguably, the most beautiful was Solon Palmer's pallette die-cut card - advertising one of the United States' earliest perfumers. The silliest looking would probably be the one for Bowker's Odeur Du Bois - picturing an enraged Victorian lady, charging and swinging a closed umbrella.
