A good copy; old ink stain to p. 74 has resulted in the loss of a few letters; some margins close ( but complete ); binding worn
Description
[Madrid]: [ M R de Murga ], [1719]. First Edition, second state - plates numbered.. Contemporary limp vellum.. A good copy; old ink stain to p. 74 has resulted in the loss of a few letters; some margins close ( but complete ); binding worn; text block beginning to split.. 4to. There is an eng. title, frontis. (with four saints), eng. portrait, and 39 eng. plates. A sought after book in which the author departs from usual forms of calligraphic art and presents it as a geometrical science. It is the first Spanish writing manual listed in the Hofer catalog. Harvard has two copies, both defective. The copy offered here is, according to Palau, Hofer, and others, complete with the maximum number of plates. Palau suggests that early issues of the book may have fewer plates. The author was an orphan (born in 1663) raised by the schoolmaster of his native town (Mostoles). He was to become famous as a creative and inventive ( and favored ) member of the court as well as a didactic writer on art, a mathematician, architect, and instructor of fencing. An impressive work with plates illustrating the laying out of dials and the mathematical basis for various letter forms. This resulted in a lengthy and detailed text that is most uncommon for this kind of book. The engraving throughout is elaborate and elegant. Only one plate is signed by the engraver Juan Bernabe Palomino; Cotarelo assigns all the engraving to him. The state results from the fact that the plates are numbered consecutively - Harvard has a defective copy without the numbering. What is of special interest is the crucial siginificance ( see Corbeto ) of such books and especially Aznar de Polanco on the early development of punchcutting in Spain during the formative mid-eighteenth century. The in depth analysis of the ' letra grifa ' - a cursive type - is directly attributed to Aznar de Polanco. Hofer Coll., # 137; Palau # 21133; Cotarelo y Mori I, pp. 134 - '40; see Corbeto, The Library, v. 10, #3, esp. pp. 286 - 289.

Description
(Vologda): Izdanie Vologodskogo otdeleniia gosudarstvennogo izdatelstva, 1922. Good. Second printing (published shortly after the first), 1 of 4000 copies; 10 3/4 x 9; pp. [62]; rebound in speckled, gilt-and-black paper over boards and 3/4 leatherette; original wraps bound in; illustrated with beautiful lithographed plates; a few small deaccession stamps; two of the plates with archival repairs to verso; page numbers in manuscript (as published [?]); in good to very good condition. An ambitious and beautifully-executed endeavour, the book was a collaboration between author, historian, and educator Vera Dmitrievna Andreevskaia (1886 - 1960) and painter, graphic artist, stage designer, and part of Mir Iskusstva Nikolai Pavlovich Dmitrevskii (1890 - 1938). Intended for the "general population," the publication presented the history of clothing and fashion of various time periods - from primitive garbs through ancient Greek, Italian, and Chinese, to 18th-century French and 19th-century Russian outfits. Furthermore, to enhance the character of the style of the era, the artist added in the margins of the plates ornaments and other nation-specific symbols (cuneiform, etc.). The influence of the World of Art movement on Dmitrevskii could be clearly seen, especially in the illustrations of the French and Russian clothing. However, in some critics' opinions, the project was just a marginal success, as compared to other brilliant works of Dmitrievskii, this one showed his "little interest in the matter and lack of inspiration." Furthermore, the critics felt it was impossible to cover such an elaborate and all-encompassing subject in one thin volume. Nevertheless, for what it was, the book was overwhelmingly well-received, informative, and quite-handsome.

New York: Pach Bros., 935 B'way, 1900. Ephemera no binding. Very good. Card measures 8 11/16" x 10 ¼"; mounted photograph is 7 ¼" x 9 3/8"; bottom right card corner chipped, light creasing across bottom of photograph and two light vertical scratches, spotting to rear of card; very good. Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) was best known as the author of the Gibson Girl in the late 19th and at the start of the 20th century. The drawings of these beautiful, active, and seemingly independent women first graced the pages of popular magazines such as Life Magazine, Collier's, Scribner's, and Harper's Weekly, and later were published as collections in books. The photograph of the author and artist is taken in a sitting room setting, with two long couches in the background flanking a fireplace. Long decorative draperies have been pulled across the windows, probably to block the glare from outside lighting. The artist sits at an adjustable drawing table with a smaller table holding small bottles of ink and brushes at his elbow. Not smiling, he gazes calmly at the camera with one hand lightly resting on his drawing board. Balding in his later life, here he retains a full head of hair.
