Description
London: The Verona Press [Printed at the Officina Bodoni, Verona, 1939], 1939. Limited Edition. Leather. Very Good Plus. Laurencin, Marie. No. 10 of 30 de luxe copies, quarto size, 328 pp., signed by Marie Laurencin (twice). Kathleen Mansfield Murry (1888-1923), born and raised in New Zealand, moved to the UK at the age of 19 where she became a friend of modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf; she died at the age of 34 from tuberculosis. This work is a collection of her short stories, wonderfully illustrated by Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), a French painter and an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde. She was a member of the circle which included Pablo Picasso and other cubists, and is known as one of the few female Cubist painters (n.b., above info from Wiki). The lithographs in this volume are more traditional, being lovely portraits of the characters evoking the deep emotions of the stories. ___DESCRIPTION: De luxe version bound in turquoise leather and signed by the artist (two signatures, as set forth above), simple embossed ruled borders in dark green on both boards and the spine, tan leather spine label with gilt lettering, top edge gilt, ruled borders in gilt on the turn-ins, title page in rust and black with a decorative border, Publisher's Note tipped in after the copyright page (7.25" by 5"), sixteen colour lithographs throughout the text, colophon page at the rear, this signed twice by Marie Laurencin (once on the page titled "Colophon", again on the colophon page itself), limited edition of 1200 copies of which numbers 1-30 were signed by the artist, this no. 10; small quarto in size (approximately 10" tall), pagination: (i-x), 1-316, Colophon (317-318). The custom box is quarter-bound in turquoise leather, black leather spine label with gilt lettering and decorative rules over natural linen boards, the sides of the box being of ivory cloth, the interior sides of ivory paper. ___CONDITION: Very good plus to near fine overall, with the leather boards being smooth and supple, a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, the original ribbon marker is present, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the spine is somewhat sunned, ribbon marker faded at the bottom, some wear on the bottom edges of the boards, some light foxing on the fore-edge of the text block, and some very light toning to the free endpapers from the turn-ins. The custom box is fine, with some sunning to the spine from turquoise to teal. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
London: M. Cooper, 1753. 53 pp. Lacking the half title, foxing and light staining. Nicely bound in 3/4 morrocco. Young Elizabeth Canning disappeared from her home in London. Her family had no idea what happened to her. Almost a month later she returned home with injuries and dressed rags. She told a tale of being kidnapped and held in the garret of the home of a London woman. The story was confusing and some supported Canning and some supported people she indicated kidnapped her. Eventually she was accused of lying and was transported to Wethersfield Connecticut where she died at age 38.

Description
Los Angeles, California, 1985. 131 photos measuring 3 ½ x 5 inches with fourteen pieces of ephemera, in a photo album. Near Fine.. A photo album documenting West Hollywood’s 1985 Pride parade. Eighty-seven photos are of the parade and forty-four are of the photographer’s trip to Ventura with, presumably, her girlfriend. Marchers include feminist lawyer Gloria Allred, The Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, Gay Vietnamese of Southern California, actress and HIV/AIDS advocate Judith Light, and drag queen mayoral candidate Kitty Cole. There is also one shot of protestors with signs such as “Repent Arrogant Sinners God’s Judgment and Hell are Coming”. The Times estimated about 8,000 marchers and 50,000 to 150,000 “well-mannered spectators”.[1] The album also contains a small collection of ephemera, including an admission ticket to the parade, flyers for the “Girls Club” dating service and Papi’s Escandalo club, a condom from The AIDS Project of Greater Los Angeles, and various other events, publications, and so on. 1895 was the twenty-fifth anniversary of Pride in the LA area. The first LA Pride was held on Hollywood Boulevard in 1970, and commemorated the previous year’s Stonewall riot in New York City. The parade moved to West Hollywood, now a notable LGBTQ neighborhood, in 1979.[2] [1] Daryl Kelley, “Thousands Turn Out for Festive Gay Pride Parade,” Los Angeles Times, Metro, June 24, 1985, 1–2. Description
[Washington?, 1870. Caption title, as issued. 40pp. Text clean, bound in modern plain wrappers. Very Good. Signed in type at the end by B. H. Bristow, Solicitor General of the United States. This case demonstrates the Supreme Court's grudging recognition of -- indeed, its reluctance to implement -- the Reconstruction Congress's efforts to provide black citizens with equal treatment under the law. Blyew and Kennard, adult "white persons," were convicted in a Kentucky federal court for having murdered Lucy Armstrong, an elderly "citizen of the United States of America, of the African race." The case was open-and-shut, the murder having been witnessed by several American citizens "of the African race." They heard Kennard declare, "in presence of Blyew, 'that he [Kennard] thought there would soon be another war about the niggers; that when it did come, he intended to go to killing niggers, and he was not sure that he would not begin his work of killing them before the war should actually commence'." Under the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the seminal Reconstruction statute and the predecessor of the Fourteenth Amendment, trial occurred in a federal rather than in a Kentucky State Court: Under State law, "colored persons were denied the right to 'give evidence' against white persons." This, the United States argued, was sufficient to bring the case into a federal court, where the entire case could be heard, with witnesses regardless of race. Astonishingly, the Supreme Court disagreed. Its opinion is recorded at 80 U. S. 581 [1871].

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1946. First edition. Very Good+. Publisher's tan cloth. Some wear to corners and fraying to cloth at spine. A bit of dampstaining to edges. Illustrated by Samuel Hanks Bryant. The novel was adapted for the stage in 1948; this copy is warmly inscribed by seven members of the original Broadway cast to fellow cast member Harvey Lembeck, who played the character of Insigna in over a thousand performances from 1948 to 1951. The hit production received Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Performance by a Leading Actor (Henry Fonda), Best Producer, Best Author, and Best Director. It also received a Theatre World Award for the performance of Ralph Meeker, whose friendly inscription ("Luck to a wonderful actor, and room-mate") can be found in this copy. Thomas Heggen wrote Mister Roberts based on his experiences on a US Navy cargo ship in the South West Pacific theater during World War II. The novel was subsequently adapted into films in 1955 and 1984 and into a television series that ran from 1965-1966. Heggen died just a year after the play was first staged; Mister Roberts was his only major publication. Inscriptions: Robert Baines (who played the role of Wiley), Steven Hill (Stefanowski), Karl Lukas (Lindstrom), Casey Walters (Dolan), Ralph Meeker (Mannion), Rusty Lane (Chief Johnson), and Joe Marr (Dowdy). Very Good+.

A loose note sheet of paper is laid inside the album. It reads: "Lynn June 12-96 (1896) I came across this book in Lynn and I thought it might prove interesting to some one in Lowell a place I have never visited. I was born in 1859 at New Hampton where young Wilson apparently attended the New Hampton Literary Institute. Please do not return the book. Herbert W. Hartshorne 112 Alley St. Lynn.
