Description
(New York): (Adventures in Poetry), 1973. Near fine.. Lettered copy of the doubly signed limited first edition of Elliott's debut, with a cover illustration of a burning cruciform box by Edward Gorey. Gorey and Elliott, a writer described by Fagin as "completely off the radar screen" when these prose pieces were published, shared a connection in John Ashbery: Elliott's unhappy former co-worker at the Brooklyn Public Library, who first met Frank O'Hara at an exhibition of Gorey's paintings. Elliott, a close friend of Paul and Jane Bowles and a fellow resident with them in the February House, the short-lived Brooklyn artist's commune, was for Ashbery the best thing about working at the library, introducing the younger poet to Bowles, Mary Butts, and Jean Rhys, among others (Roffman). Elliott died in 1974, only a year after this first book publication; his other works were written variously under his own name and the pseudonyms Richard Fields, Richard Hotchkiss, and David Martin. A great copy, published by Larry Fagin's Adventures in Poetry imprint. 11'' x 8.5''. Original side-stapled pictorial wrappers by Edward Gorey. Mimeographed text. [60] pages. Edition of 26 lettered copies signed by author and artist; this copy no. U, signed by Elliott and Gorey at colophon. Light soil/toning to wrappers, minor edgewear.

Description
Philadelphia: Published by Barclay & Co., 1887. Original printed wrappers, the front wrapper with illustration of a woman holding her child: "My God, My Child is Dead." Illustrated rear wrapper with caption, "The disguised mother, Mrs. Burleigh, knelt by the side of her sleeping child and, with heaven-lifted eyes, prayed for courage." [4], 21-78, [2 publ. advts.] pp, as issued. Stitched. Five full-page illustrations, their versos blank. Front wrapper laid down on sympathetic card stock. Else Very Good. Another in the pleasingly lurid Barclay "true crime" genre. Its inclusion in Wright's bibliography suggests that the account is fiction. But Francis Tracey, commissioned by Barclay, assures that his report is "true history," now available to the public only because he has "persevered in the face of great obstacles." Thanks to the "liberality" of the Barclay firm, Tracey was able "to thoroughly investigate the matter," a disturbing tale of family strife, lust, jealousy, and death at the Burleigh Mansion in North Reading. III Wright 3932. OCLC 228695552 [1- Huntington], 1143795147 [1- Yale], 77679756 [1- Clements] as of March 2026.

Description
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First printing, octavo size, 185 pp. From the Clarendon Press, "This is an important work of original scholarship by two of the most distinguished East European economists, now working in the West. The authors, both of whom were involved in the Planning Office of the Polish economy in the 1950s and 1960s, present here the results of their efforts to develop theoretically a system of economic management which could in practice avoid the worst excesses of both market capitalism and central planning. The conclusions derived from this analysis are shown to open up a new dimension to the 'socialism versus capitalism' controversy which has dominated much of the world throughout the twentieth century and which is especially significant as the countries of East and Central Europe re-structure their economies". ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in black cloth over boards, gilt lettering on spine, light blue endpapers, occasional black and white colored graphs; octavo size (9 3/8" x 6 1/8"), pagination: [i-vii] [1 blank] [1-3] 4-177. Dust jacket is unclipped, unpriced, with illustration on front panel, summary on front flap, author bios on rear flap, related titles from OUP on back cover. ___CONDITION: Volume is fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, and a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings. Dust jacket is fine overall, unclipped and unpriced, it is clean and bright without any signs of sunning; nearly imperceptible edge wear at fold of flaps, else fine. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
