Very good.
Description
Philadelphia: Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1866. Very good.. 84pp. 12mo. Original embossed publisher's cloth, spine gilt lettered. Light wear to corners and spine ends. Scattered foxing and dust soiling internally, heavier to initial leaves. Contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper. The third tract in this slim volume, "Uncle Johnson: The Pilgrim of Six Score Years," is the first appearance of the Reverend Gustavus Foster's biographical account of the former slave Uncle Johnson. An early footnote clarifies that Johnson, "was purely of African descent. His full name was Johnson Harrison -- the Harrison, as he said, being his master's name in Virginia, and the Johnson his own. For this he preferred to be called Johnson." Johnson was born into slavery during colonial times and given freedom in his old age in the mid-19th century. He relayed the events of his life to his neighbor Foster over the years before his death -- his enslaver marking Johnson's birthdate in his Bible (1745, thus improbably making him 120 years old at the time of his passing); General Washington making frequent visits to the plantation; celebrations of the Declaration of Independence; and more. Foster continues in his own vein to describe Johnson as a good an pious neighbor. The two tracts preceding the account of Johnson are reprints of writing by English preacher John Ashworth. The narrative of Johnson's life went on to be published the next year separately under the title, "Uncle Johnson: A Pilgrimage of Six Score Years." We locate three copies of the present edition, at the Princeton Theological Seminary, the University of Utah, and the Presbyterian Historical Society. Scarce.

Description
CHILDE HASSAM (1859-1935). Frederick Childe Hassam was an American Impressionist painter who was developmental for the introduction of Impressionism to American collectors, dealers, and museums. He was known for his urban and coastal scenes, producing over 3,000 paintings, oils, watercolors, etchings, and lithographs over his career. He is known for his series of art called the Flag Series, having one titled The Avenue in the Rain located in The White House.ALS. 1pg. N.d. Old Lyme, Connecticut. An autograph letter signed Childe Hassam to Mr. Church. My dear Mr. Church Your letter just reached me here and I will send out my short address by October thirty-first as you wish. Yours very truly Childe Hassam. This letter was likely to F. Edwin Church, the nephew of artist Frederic Edwin Church. Hassam did not start visiting Old Lyme Art Colony in Connecticut until 1903, and Frederic Edwin Church died in 1900. However, his nephew that is named after him was an artist and illustrator known for his portraits and Japanese-influenced style. F. Edwin Church was a member of the National Academy of Design and the Salmagundi Club, where Hassam was also a member. This letter mentions sending a short address, likely referring to an administrative task regarding one of these shared clubs. The letter is framed below a reproduction of Hassams work Allies Day, May 1917. This letter is professionally framed and in very fine condition.

Description
Orthwine. No binding. Fine. New York: Roy Blakey Photography, 1974. Vintage original 14 x 11" (36 x 28 cm.) double weight oversized black-and-white photo. With photographer stamp on back. Accompanied by a 6 3/4 x 5 7/8" (16.5 x 12.5 cm.) blueline proof (date stamped Oct 3, 1974) used for publication, very possibly in After Dark magazine (as evidenced by publisher Rudolf Orthwine's stamp on verso). Fine. An unusually glamorous image of Warhol superstar Jackie Curtis in a sumptuous large format. Curtis appeared in many off-off Broadway productions in the early to mid-1970s. While performing in drag, Curtis would typically wear lipstick, glitter, bright red hair, ripped dresses and stockings. Curtis pioneered this combination of trashy and glamour, a style that has prompted assertions that Curtis inspired the glitter/glam rock movement of the 1970s. Andy Warhol said of Curtis, "Jackie Curtis is not a drag queen. Jackie is an artist. A pioneer without a frontier." Primarily a stage actress, Curtis debuted at the age of 17 in Tom Eyen's play Miss Nefertiti Regrets produced in 1965 at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club along with fellow newcomer Bette Midler. Curtis began writing her own plays immediately after this production. Her productions often featured well-known transgender performers, such as Candy Darling and Holly Woodlawn. And photos of her can be found -- but I have personally never seen another to give her this kind of deluxe and, frankly, elegant treatment.
