Description
NBC Television. No binding. Just About Fine. [New York]: NBC-TV, 1978-1985. Set of 43 vintage original 7 x 9" (18 x 23 cm) black-and-white photos. Almost all have promotional text as well as old photo agency stickers affixed on verso. Overall just about fine. Diff'rent Strokes is a sitcom which originally aired on NBC from November 3, 1978, to May 4, 1985, and on ABC from September 27, 1985, to March 7, 1986. The series starred Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, respectively, who are two boys from Harlem taken in by a wealthy Park Avenue businessman and his daughter. Phillip Drummond (Conrad Bain) is a widower for whom their deceased mother previously worked; his daughter, Kimberly, is played by Dana Plato. During the first season and the first half of the second season, Charlotte Rae also starred as Mrs. Edna Garrett, the Drummonds' first housekeeper, who ultimately spun off into her own sitcom, The Facts of Life, as a housemother at the fictional Eastland School. The second housekeeper, Adelaide Brubaker, was played by Nedra Volz. The third housekeeper, Pearl Gallagher, was played by Mary Jo Catlett, first appearing as a recurring character, later becoming a main cast member. The series made stars of Coleman, Bridges, and Plato and became known for the "very special" episodes, in which serious issues such as racism, illegal drug use, alcoholism, hitchhiking, kidnapping, and child sexual abuse were dramatically explored. (Wikipedia) Coleman or Bridges, or the pair of them, are in every single photo in this archive.

Very good.
Description
Paris: Simon de Colines and Galliot du Pré, 1543. Very good.. Benedictine" edition of the New Testament in Latin, edited through careful comparison of multiple medieval manuscript sources. An important New Testament edition in the Latin history of the Bible, for which Benoît collated "most of the then known" medieval manuscripts (Schreiber, 149), seeking the most accurate readings and correcting transcription errors. Produced in the midst of the foment about translations spurred partly by the Reformation, this translation did not seek novelty but rather a refinement of the established tradition. First issued as part of the complete Bible (also by Colines) in 1541, this is the first independent printing of the translation. Two years after its publication, the Council of Trent would affirm the doctrinal preference for Latin editions in the Catholic Church. Octavo, 6.5'' x 4.25''. 18th-century full speckled calf, raised bands, red goatskin spine label, gilt-stamped spine compartments. Marbled endpapers, all edges stained red, two silk ribbon markers. Index at rear. 183, [1]; 140; 8 ff. 18th-century ink notes to rear fly leaf, listing the order of Epistles according to Fleury; later ink annotation to front fly leaf "très rare" and noting it was published two years before the Council of Trent. Cracking to front hinge (still firm); light chipping and wear to boards. Faint dampstaining to text block.

About very good.
Description
[Various locations in the American Southwest and West, 1923. About very good.. Two oblong folio photograph albums bound in brown pebbled leather, each titled in gilt on front cover, "WANDERLUST," containing a total of 266 full-page vernacular and professional photographs. First albums: [146] leaves, illustrated with 128 full-page landscape photographs, each around 6 x 8 inches or slightly larger, and occasional manuscript or hand-fashioned sectional title pages and maps. Second volume: [148] leaves, illustrated with 138 photographs and occasional manuscript or hand-fashioned sectional title pages. All contents mounted one per page to recto of each leaf. Spines perished, but holding strong, boards worn, scuffed, and soiled. Contents noticeably curled, with minor to moderate dust-soiling throughout. A studio photograph of a young man is laid-in to the first album, likely the compiler of the albums but sadly unidentified. An elaborately-produced pair of vernacular photograph albums documenting an epic cross-country train excursion in 1923 by a well-to-do but anonymous traveler from New York, comprised of over 260 full-page photographs. The photographs are a mixture of silver gelatin images, printing out paper prints, handcolored photographs, and a handful of cyanotypes. Most of the images appear to be taken by the traveler en route, but some images may have been bought along the way. The images largely picture the landscape or architecture seen along the way, with a healthy number of images showing the railroad and the railcars themselves, with many images taken at train depots. The occasional manuscript sectional title pages denote the regions of travel, as the compiler moved west to California and then eventually back east towards home. The first album begins with a manuscript title leaf quoting the text of Gerald Gould's poem "Wanderlust," supplemented by two small drawings and two thumbnail photographs. A map on the second leaf traces the voyage from New York, down through the American South and Southwest to California and back to New York through Arizona, Colorado, and the Midwest. Thereafter, the album is comprised mostly of full-page photographs grouped together by location, with anywhere from a few to several images per section. The first section in the first album shows the first major stop on the trip -- Washington, D.C. and Mount Vernon; this section contains photographs of the Capitol, the Lincoln Monument, other D.C. buildings, and several on the grounds of George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. The album then includes sections featuring New Orleans (six photographs); the route between New Orleans and El Paso (five images, including the train depot at Langtry, Texas); El Paso (five shots featuring the city and street views); Juarez, Mexico (eight shots, mostly either street scenes or a bullfight); "Thru New Mexico and Arizona" (four images); The Apache Trail in Arizona (nineteen shots, mostly desert landscapes but with some buildings along the trail); and onward through the Carriso Gorge (seven photos) to California beginning at Coronado Beach (eight photographs). The remainder of the first album features California locations, namely San Diego (sixteen images, mostly missions); Pasadena (ten photos mostly featuring gardens); Catalina Island (eight shots of the island scenery or the bay); Los Angeles (eight views in Santa Monica, Venice, and Ocean Park); and ending with fourteen images featuring missions and other notable structures in Santa Barbara. The second volume picks up the excursion in Del Monte, California, featuring fifteen scenes in Carmel by the Sea and Monterey. The photographic journey of California then continues to Santa Cruz and the Big Trees (five shots); San Francisco (eleven views around the city and in the Japanese gardens); Mt. Tamalpais (a dozen shots of elevated vistas, big trees, and forests); Yosemite National Park (twenty park views); Mariposa Big Trees (seven shots); and ends with the Glenwood Mission Inn in Riverside (twenty-two images of the hotel grounds and other local scenery and missions around Riverside). The remainder of the album features photographs from the Grand Canyon in Arizona (twenty-six images, mostly landscapes but with a few featuring Native American ceremonies) and Colorado Springs (twenty landscapes and other views of the city, surrounding desert, Pikes Peak, and so forth). Concerned mostly with scenery of the American South, Southwest, and West Coast, the compiler did not see fit to record photographs of the remainder of his trip back home to New York. In addition to the information contained in the photographs here, the elaborate materiality (custom matching albums with matching gilt titles to the front board, handcrafted sectional title pages, the hand-drawn and traced map) and the nature of the organization of the albums (arranged in the order of travel from east to west and back east again) speaks volumes about the importance the compiler placed on the trip. Substantially documented western travel albums are growing rare in the market, and the present example is one of the most carefully-assembled examples we have ever seen.

504 pp. photographically illustrated book showing the structures at every address on both sides of New York City's most famous street from its point of origin to Central Park. Oblong 4to. Very good. Original wrappers preserved in recent linen boards. [439] A fascinating project intended to provide a photographic atlas of Manhattan's premiere commercial strip. De Leeuw's book offered businesses along the route advertising space to accompany the images of their location. Now it remains a marvelous document of a city in flux during the early days of the 20th century. An overlooked and important photobook. Scarce in the marketplace.

Description
First Edition. 32 pp., letterpress on commercial stock in printed gold stiff wrappers. 4to. Good. Cover lightly soiled with a few light creases and minor edegwear. Interiors clean. [2158] An unusual and uncommon pamphlet of African American protest songs, published from the collection of Lawrence Gellert following one earlier, titled "Negro Songs of Protest", and advertising two more forthcoming titles on the inside cover which appear not to have materialized. Gellert, born in Hungary, became an avid collector of African American music after moving to South Carolina to recover from an illness. Songs in the present pamphlet were arranged for voice and piano by Adomian, originally from Russia, a musician and composer who had also fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and eventually moved to Mexico. An interesting collection for having an implicit leftist/Marxist political bent, and being from the era immediately preceding the Civil Rights Movement.

Description
Amsterdam: Chez D. J. Changuion, 1770. 169 x 104 mm. (6 3/4 x 4"). Two volumes. Translated from the German by Réneume de Latache. Inexpensive contemporary half sheepskin over sprinkled paper boards, smooth spine divided into panels by gilt rules, one tan and one black morocco label. Engraved printer's device on title pages. Verso of half titles with bookplate of M. Le Syndic [Jean-Louis] Masbou, dated 1827. Leather with minor stains and losses, isolated spots of foxing, but in most ways a beautiful copy--the spine ends and joints unworn, and the text extraordinarily fresh and with virtually no signs of use. This is a really excellent contemporary copy of an early edition of a French translation of the first attempt at a rigorous analysis of animal behavior. Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694-1768) is largely remembered for his contributions to Deist philosophy, but his wide-ranging research interests included mathematics, philology, and economics, as well as natural history, as evidenced in the present work, initially published in German in 1760. Reimar argues in the text here for instinct as a driving factor in animals' actions, rather than a response to bodily necessities or taught behavior. Our French translation, by journalist and natural historian Jacques Réneaume de Latache (1725-96), features additional notes and commentary, concerning Latache's own observations of animals. These include such charming details as the romance of butterflies and the work ethic of beavers. Our copy is from the library of Jean-Louis Masbou (1770-1836), an important player in Geneva politics in the early 19th century. Masbou held several government posts between 1814 and 1832, including serving as one of the four mayors, or syndics, six times during the period between 1821-32. This bookplate was evidently produced during one of these mayorships, as it refers to the syndic office. Our 1770 Amsterdam printing seems to be the only collectible edition that appears on the market..

Description
Yokohama: H. Takemura & Co. [Hideo Takemura], 1930. Decorative Box. Each group of cards held together by paper band. Fine. Hiroshiga. Stunning group of place cards that transcend the genre -- these place cards are exquisite miniature woodblocks based on Hiroshiga's immortal artwork. Plus there is the added interest of the extra ten cards (two of two designs, three, of the other two designs) that obviously aren't quite yet the finished version of their artwork, yet are lovely just the same. These extras have some similarities to the artwork in the four complete sets, but they are unequivocally different -- the placement and size of a tori, for instance, is distinguishable, etc. N.d., probably from the 1930s when this printer and publisher, Hideo Takemura, was active and such place cards would have had an enthusiastic pool of buyers among Western tourists. H. Takemura was known for his printing of woodblock prints, generally, of course, in a larger format. Place cards would have been a novelty offshoot of that, but in our view, they are more than just throwaway variant reproductions. Besides the charm of the small to some collectors, these cards have an intensity of color that is breathtaking; that intensity is undimmed even after a century. These cards -- and the card is thick and near unbendable -- are almost too nice to use for a party just to have tossed after. Even though Takemura printed his own artwork, one can understand the incentive to use Hiroshiga imagery for place cards because of their irresistible appeal to tourists wanting to take home a piece of quintessential Japan as they imagined it, and the traditional virtually always shapes their view of a foreign culture. Not to be slighted is the packaging of these cards. The box paper pastedown is itself a work of decorative art, with its faux wood grain design, a trompe d'oeil one could say, and a pattern that captures something of the evanescent notion that informs much Eastern art -- there is a sense of movement in the irregular rippling pattern. The paper label on top of the lid is has a silhouette design and some calligraphic characters. Condition: All the cards, including the bonus cards, are pristine. Whoever bought the cards when visiting Japan clearly never dipped into the box once home, as it is complete and virtually untouched. The box has minor wear and soiling, as boxes not kept in a vacuum inevitably undergo.

Description
The Mohawk and Hudson Railroad was one of the first railroads in America and the very first in the state of New York. It was began in 1826 and opened in 1831. ALS. 1pg. 8 x 10. 1831. New York. An autograph letter signed H. Beeckman to Barrent Beeckman, the Treasurer of the Albany and Schenectady Turnpike. Beeckman wrote to an Albany man about investing in an early railroad. Originally known as the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, it was one of Americas first railroads, established only a few years after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Beeckman also mentions the Albany and Schenectady Turnpike Company, which had managed the road between those two towns since 1797. Yesterday I recd a written notice from T. Van Vechten Esq. President of the Albany and Schenectady Turnpike d 20th ulto In conformity to said notice, I agree to become entrusted in the Rail Road contemplated to be made in the same numbers & shares I now hold in the Turnpike & Eighteen shares. I remain Yours respectfully H Beeckman. Teunis Van Vechten was later Mayor of Albany. This is a very early mention of public railroads anywhere. It is in very good condition with mailing folds.

(1950s); 8 1/2 x 7; pp. [4]; pictorial wraps with a silhouette of the Eiffel Tower in white, purple, and green; 15 square sample chips in bright, brilliant colors; generally very mild wear - a faint spot from a removed bookshop label to back wrap; one of th echips with a tiny scratch; in very good or better condition. A lovely advertising and sample catalog, it showcased some of the casein colors offered by Luminall Paints in the 1950s. Casein paint, derived from milk casein (protein) is known for drying to an even consistency, with a matte finish, which visually resembles oil painting. The pamphlet reads: "Just as the Eiffel Tower is known to the four corners of the world as a symbol of Paris, so are Luminall Casein Colors known world-wide for their richness and purity of color, for true color value, for smoothness and ease of painting."
