Description
London: Indica Gallery, 1966. First edition. Very Good. The exhibition catalog for Yoko Ono’s transformative one-woman show at London’s Indica Gallery. Famous for the place where she and John Lennon first met. A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL: THE ONLY COPY WE CAN LOCATE WITH ALL THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND SLIPS INTACT. The “Yoko at Indica” catalog is an interactive work of performance art, much like her actual exhibit, held in November 1966. There are eight leaves of black and white images of the exhibits printed on gummed paper, with three images to a page, perforated so each of the 24 images can be removed and pasted onto a half-page slip with the correct caption. The slips were created by splitting the text pages horizontally – the caption slips are on the top, while the bottom slips, moving independently of the top slips, contain vintage Ono sayings, instructions, and “imaginations”, as well as a somewhat humorous sales/price list, a bio (“gave birth to a grapefruit / collected snails, clouds, garbage cans”) and an artist’s statement (“People went on cutting the parts they do not like of me finally there was only the stone remained of me that was in me but they were still not satisfied and wanted to know what it’s like in the stone”). Some of the pieces exhibited (and illustrated in the catalog) include her famous white chess set (Play It by Trust), Painting To Be Stepped On, Painting To Hammer A Nail, and significantly, Apple, and Ceiling Painting. “Apple” was the piece that first got John Lennon’s attention when he visited the gallery before the opening at the request of the gallery co-owner John Dunbar. The exhibit – an apple on a pedestal – was supposed to decay over the run of the show as a commentary on the cycle of life, impermanence, and deterioration, but Lennon walked up to the apple and started eating it. He then discovered “Ceiling Painting”, where a ladder was placed under a magnifying glass attached to the ceiling. If the visitor – in this case Lennon – climbed the ladder and used the magnifying class, they could view the tiny painting on the ceiling, simply the word “yes”. Lennon was impressed, much more so than with the apple. As he later explained: “Well, all the so-called avant-garde art at the time and everything that was supposedly interesting was all negative, this smash-the-piano-with-a-hammer, break-the-sculpture boring negative crap. It was all anti-, anti-, anti-. Anti-art, anti-establishment. And just that ‘yes’ made me stay in a gallery full of apples and nails instead of just walking out saying, ‘I’m not gonna buy any of this crap.’” (quoted in Sheff, 62). Although their relationship didn't begin immediately, the impression each made on the other at the Indica Gallery set the stage for the future. Interestingly, the catalog notes “production by Anthony Cox.” Cox was Ono’s husband at the time, and soon to be in a very contentious relationship with Lennon and Ono over the dissolution of their marriage and the custody of their daughter Kyoko. The catalog is often overshadowed by the fact that it marks the place where Ono and Lennon first met, but that does a disservice to the remarkable nature of the catalog itself. With its innovative format and provocative Ono quotes, the catalog is an interactive work of art, inviting the reader to fully participate in the exhibit through the catalog. It is a natural sequel to Ono’s groundbreaking Grapefruit from 1964, and a monument of the Fluxus movement. London: Indica Gallery, 1966. Size: 5.5x11 in. (14x28 cm). Composed of illustrated card stock wrappers, complete with 8 thin sheets with 3 photographs per sheet (perforated but still all held together) and gummed adhesive on back (but not sticky, thank goodness) for a total of 24 images; 12 interior text sheets split along the horizontal with the top sheets designed for the 24 images (front and back of each sheet) and the bottom with Ono’s text. Housed in custom box. Some light rubbing to covers, a few sheets with just a hint of adhesive offset. An absolutely remarkable survival in such beautiful and complete original condition. Description
Leipzig: Hirzel, 1865. First edition. Original wrappers. FIRST EDITIONS (JOURNAL ISSUES IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS) OF TWO LANDMARK PAPERS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF TOPOLOGY, IN WHICH IN WHICH, AMONG OTHER THINGS, MÖBIUS DESCRIBED THE MÖBIUS STRIP, DEFINED THE TOPOLOGICAL CONCEPTS NOW KNOWN AS GENUS AND ORIENTABILITY, AND SHOWED THAT ALL CLOSED ORIENTABLE SURFACES OF A PARTICULAR GENUS ARE TOPOLOGICALLY EQUIVALENT TO EACH OTHER. The two papers offered here contain three key discoveries that pioneered the branch of mathematics known as topology. 1. The Möbius Strip. "Möbius first described the 'Möbius band' in a paper presented to the Paris Academy in 1861 as an entry to a competition on the theme 'Improve in some important point the geometric theory of polyhedra.' Möbius's paper, written in bad French and containing many new ideas, was not understood by the jury, and like the other papers submitted to the competition, was not awarded the prize. The content of this paper was later published by Möbius in [the two articles offered here]." (Kolmogorov, Andrei N. and Adolf-Andrei P. Yushkevich, Mathematics in the 19th Century: Geometry, Analytic Function Theory (vol. 2) (1996), at 101.) Möbius's notebooks make it clear that he discovered the Möbius strip in 1858, and as noted above he first described it in his unpublished submission to the Paris Academy in 1861. However, he did not publish the discovery until the 1865 paper listed here. Although the Möbius strip will forever bear his name, the mathematician Johann Listing beat him to the actual discovery (two months before Möbius), and to the publication of the discovery. "Working independently, Listing first 'encountered' the surface in July 1858 and published his findings in 1861. However, Möbius seems to have taken the concept a bit farther than Listing by more closely exploring the concept of orientability as it relates to Möbius-like surfaces." (Clifford A. Pickover, The Möbius Strip: Dr. August Möbius's Marvelous Band in Mathematics, Games, Literature, Art, Technology, and Cosmology (2007), at 28-29.) "It is an accident of history that Möbius's name is remembered because of a topological party-piece. But it was typical that Möbius should notice a simple fact that anyone could have done in the previous two thousand years - and typical that nobody did, apart from the simultaneous and independent discovery by Listing." (Ian Stewart, "Möbius's Modern Legacy," in John Fauvel, et al., eds, Möbius and His Band: Mathematics and Astronomy in Nineteenth-Century German (1993).) "[T]he Möbius strip is the ultimate metaphor for something simple, yet profound - something anyone could have discussed centuries prior to its discovery, but didn't. The Möbius strip is a metaphor for magic and mystery, and a perpetual icon that stimulates us to dream new dreams and look for depths even in seemingly shallow waters." (Pickover, op. cit., at 197.) 2. Classification of surfaces. In the 1863 paper, Möbius discussed the classification of closed orientable surfaces in terms of what is now known in topology as their "genus," and showed that any two surfaces of the same genus have "elementaren Verwandtschaften" ("elementary relationships") to each other. (Roughly, "genus" refers to the number of holes in a surface; thus, a spherical surface has a genus of zero and a toroidal surface (donut shape) has a genus of one - as, for that matter, does a coffee cup (the handle is the "hole").) Möbius' theory of "elementary relationships" was the origin of the modern concept of "homeomorphism" - a fundamental idea in topology. Two surfaces are said to be homeomorphic if one can be converted to each other by any strictly continuous process of stretching or bending, avoiding discontinuous processes such as tearing the surface or punching a hole in it. (Imagine pressing a dimple into a donut made of clay, and then enlarging the dimple and shrinking the hole so as to create a coffee cup.) "The classification of compact surfaces was 'known,' in some sense, by the end of the nineteenth century. Möbius and Jordan offered proofs ... in the 1860s. Möbius's paper is quite interesting; in fact, he used a Morse-theoretic approach .... The main interest in Jordan's attempt is in showing how the work of an outstanding mathematician can appear nonsensical a century later." (Morris W. Hirsch, Differential Topology (1997), at 188.) 3. Orientability. In the 1865 paper, Möbius defined the concept of the orientability of a surface in terms of whether the surface can be covered with polygons such as triangles, with each polygon assigned a direction of rotation (clockwise or counterclockwise around the vertices) such that the direction of rotation is the same for any two adjacent polygons. (An equivalent idea would be to assign arrows pointing perpendicular to the surface to each small region of the surface, such that adjacent arrows point in the same direction.) He identified the Möbius strip as an example of a non-orientable surface. (Try making a Möbius strip and decorating it with arrows in the way suggested above. It can't be done - at some point on the strip arrows pointing in opposite directions will meet.) "In fact, Möbius did rather more [in his 1865 paper] than just give a description of the [Möbius] band. His major contribution was to explain how to describe one-sidedness in a way which is independent of intuitive notions. Indeed, his idea was so fundamental that mathematicians still use it as a definition of non-orientability." (Fauvel, at 108.) IN: Berichte der Königlichen Sächsischen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig 17 (1865), pp. 31-68 and ibid., 15 (1863), pp. 18-57. Leipzig: Hirzel, 1864; 1866. Octavo, original wrappers. 1865/1866 issue with crease to back wrapper, a little soiling and occasional light foxing; 1863/1864 issue fine. Text largely unopened. Outstanding copies. Description
London: Henry G. Bohn, 1848. First edition. Octavo (8 5/8 x 5 5/8 inches; 219 x 143 mm.). [viii], [1]-453, [1, blank] pp. Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette title-page and twenty-four fine engraved plated by George Cattermole. Bound ca. 1910 by Rivière & Son in full maroon straight-grain morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt and blind, spine with five raised bands, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt-ruled board edges, gilt decorated turn-ins, pink endpapers, all edges gilt. A very fine example with the remains of the bookplate of Frederick S. Peck and an old bookseller's descriptions on front paste-down. Housed in a felt-lined burgundy cloth clamshell case, spine with leather label, lettered in gilt. Fore-edge painting by Miss C.B. Currie depicting Haddon Hall. Together with a letter of authenticity from Jeff Weber and the original receipted invoice to Randall Moscovitz dated September 5, 2012. Featuring a delicate fore-edge painting by Miss C.B. Currie "showing the dignity and grandeur of Haddon Hall... flanked by towering trees and beautiful greensward. Horses are being led to their stable by a groom and a mounted horseman can be seen in the middle distance talking to two young ladies" (Weber). The artist Miss C.B. Currie [Caroline Billin Curry] (1849-1940) was one of the most beloved book painters of the 20th century, who spent the majority of her career working for Henry Sotheran Booksellers, in London. "She became famous for her miniature paintings applied to two art forms. First on ivory, mounted on Rivière bindings and named by her employer as "Cosway" bindings. Later she expanded her work into the art of painting on the fanned edge of a book -- called a fore-edge painting. Most of these paintings were signed and numbered by the artist. Whereas fore-edge painting history is replete with unknown artists, Currie is a notable exception... In the book world, the name Miss C.B. Currie is widely recognized, yet her personal life and real name remained guarded and unknown until now. It turns out her name was, in fact, partly a pseudonym. Though her work is highly prized, there is no known published biography. Her correct full name was recently discovered to be Caroline Billin Curry. During her entire artistic career Curry used the slightly altered version of her name "Currie". Her true full name is not to be found in any published record of her work from Sotheran's" (Weber). Although unsigned, expert Jeff Weber firmly attributes the painting on this book to Miss C.B. Currie based on style and binding. He explains "... though unsigned, and as such this is the only known book without a Currie signature but bears all the signs of having been painted by her. It is on the Rivière binding, it lacks the usual "colophon" leaf seen with nearly all other Currie paintings. Currie painted both fore-edge paintings and Cosway miniatures on ivory, both in bindings commissioned and bound for Sotheran's by Rivière and Son. There are Currie paintings on ivory that are datable to pre-1910 and yet they are not signed. Peck was an active book buyer during this same period (his home and library was built in 1905), raising the likelihood that he bought a Currie fore-edge prior to her signing them" (Weber). Provenance: Frederick S. Peck - Parke-Bernet Galleries, November 14-15, 1944, lot 114; G.J. Guthrie Nicholson, Parke-Bernet Galleries, November 8-9, 1948, lot 231; Jeff Weber Rare Books - sold to Randall Moscovitz, September 5th, 2012. Frederick S. Peck (1868-1947), born in Providence Rhode Island, became a Legislator, and lived in Barrington, R.I. His papers are located at the Rhode Island Historical Society. London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First impression, second state binding without the gilt gun to the upper board. A nearly Fine copy in like dust jacket. Book with a bit of foxing to the top-edge of the text block, otherwise a lovely example overall. Published a year after Ian Fleming's death, The Man with the Golden Gun is the final James Bond novel written by its original creator. Fleming's health rapidly decreased while writing the book and though he finished a draft of the novel in 1964, he never fully re-worked it. After Fleming's death, the novel was published in the United Kingdom and then serialized in The Daily Express and Playboy. Ironically, in this novel, Bond is presumed dead before returning to London. He's been brainwashed by the Soviet Union and attempts to assassinate "M." After regaining his senses, Bond is sent to the Caribbean to assassinate Francisco Scaramanga, known as "the Man with the Golden Gun.". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

"Lodovico Ariosto represented the sentiments, the passions, and the vices and virtues of 16th-century Italians in his epic poem, L'Orlando Furioso (The Crazy Orlando). This Renaissance classic, based on romances popular at the time, furnished the framework for the chivalric narrative in Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene. Orlando Furioso is a tale of knights, dames, and courtesies when the Moors invaded France to avenge the death of their king's father. In the story Orlando (Roland), Charlemagne's nephew and most famous knight, falls madly in love with Angelica, who is also pursued by many other Christian and Moorish knights. She flees these attentions only to bestow her love in the end on a poor man without rank. Ariosto's view of life, reflected throughout the poem, is one of ironic disillusionment-love is madness. John Harington (1561-1612) was a witty courtier and godson of Queen Elizabeth. (He is also the acknowledged inventor of the flush toilet.) According to lore, Harington first translated the racy tale of Jocundo from Canto XXVIII and circulated it among the ladies of the Court. The Queen feigned to be shocked by some passages and reprimanded her godson for endangering the morals of her maids of honor. Elizabeth sentenced Harington to stay away from the Court until he had translated the whole of Ariosto's poem. Harington completed the translation by 1591. Harington's Orlando Furioso is one of the major translations of the age, freely executed but faithful to the spirit and style of the original. At 33,000 lines in length and nearly 6,000 lines shorter than the original, the translation is seldom exactly what Ariosto wrote, shorter in places and expanded elsewhere-with moral truisms added. Each of the forty-six cantos of the poem is preceded by a full-page illustration (including the especially risqué one for Canto XXVIII). All are copied strictly or with slight variation from the plates used by Girolamo Porro in a Venice edition printed in 1584. The engravings are unsigned, purportedly the work of several engravers, including possibly Jodocus Hondius. (Clark Library, UCLA Chrzanowski 1607a : Regarding the 1607 Second edition). STC 748. Pforzheimer 447. HBS 69070. $3,000.

150 pages with 42 color imprints in green, black and red and one wood cult illustrations of chess piece. Small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in quarter leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. (Hagedorn: 6; Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:457) Later edition of Philidor's work first published in 1749.Fiske noted that the paper, typography and general appearance of the work prove to have been printed in Europe and probably Belgium. But despite its spurious imprint, Hagedorn felt that it required inclusion in his bibliography of Chess in America to 1859. He goes on to suggest that the problems of its pedigree have yet to be solved. America had at that time achieved no fame in the chess world that would make a book from the United States attractive to foreign players. It does not seem to be based on any known American work. He suggest that the answer might be found in the publishing records of early nineteenth century Belgium. In 1736 at the age of 10, Francois-Andre was exposed to chess by the musicians who played chess during spells of inactivity. Cards were forbidden to pass the time, so chess was played. He learned the game by watching the band members play. He later visited the Cafe de la Regence in Paris and spent much of his time playing chess there. In 1737, at the age of 11, his first music composition, a religious piece, was played before King Louis XV. He left the Chapel Royal choir in 1740 when his voice changed. In 1740 he went to Paris where he earned a living by copying music and giving music lessons. In 1741 Philidor was being instructed by M. de Kermur, Sire de Legal (1702-1792), the leading French chess player. Legal initially gave Philidor rook odds. For the next three years Kermur taught Philidor until Philidor was too strong for his teacher. By 1750 Philidor was considered the strongest player in France, England, and the Netherlands. The French Ambassador, the Duke of Mirepoix, invited Philidor for his weekly chess dinners. In 1751 Philidor left England for Prussia, playing before King Frederick (Frederick the Great) at Potsdam. He then visited Berlin where he played 3 blindfold games simultaneously, winning them all. He then returned to England. In November 1754 he returned to France after being gone for 9 years. He started composing music again. He did not return to England until 1772. He applied unsuccessfully for the post of court composer at Versailles. A rumor had started that nobody could be a chess master and compose good music, so his church music was not really his own. His church music was not accepted by the French royalty because Philidor added an Italian influence to it, so he turned to comedy opera. In 1755 he beat Legal in a chess match at the Cafe de la Regence. On February 13, 1760, at age 33, he married Angelique Richer (1736-1809). He had 5 sons and 2 daughters with her. Description
New York; Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company; Country Life Press, 1938. Large, comb-bound octavo (23.5 x 17 cm.), [6], 126 pages. Thumb indexed. FIRST EDITION. The cookbook of The Marigold, a popular Niagara Falls restaurant, issued in the year the restaurant underwent its first expansion. Recipes range from Dixie Cake to Dixie Bread to Dumplings. Despite its Western New York State origins, this is a Southern recipe collection. While owned and managed by Mary Baldwin, a white woman, the kitchen was operated by African-Americans, some of whom Baldwin brought up from the South. Baldwin also profited from her African-American employees by using an image of Ellen Robinson on dishware and on this cookbook without permission. Robinson took Baldwin to court over the misuse of her image, but did not prevail. The Marigold was in operation until 1956. There was also a Marigold Restaurant in New Orleans, opened in 1933. Internally clean and sound. In stiff paper-covered boards, bearing a "Mammy" illustration with title. Some mild abrasion to corners, otherwise very good. Inscribed in ink on the half-title, "gift to Ruth M. Holmes, from Marigold Owner" in the hand of the recipient, a serious collector of cookbooks. An additional pencil annotation on the front paste-down records the address of the Marigold company.

Description
Philadelphia, Penn: I. L. Cragin & Co, 1890. Cord-bound booklet, stapled in wrappers (11.5 x 7.8 cm.), 31, [1] pages. Advertisements. FIRST EDITION. A promotional cookbook for Dobbins' electric soap, manufactured by I.L. Cragin & Co. The recipes alternate with testimonials for the laundry soap. The company used 'electric' in the title in order to capitalize on people's fascination with electricity at that time. The soap itself was formulated with a very alkaline base, which actually gave it a bit of a 'sting' which reminded people even more of electricity. This booklet starts off with several pages of advertisement for Dobbins Electric Soap, emphasizing how the soap is so strong, one doesn't need to be rough with one's clothes to clean them. The booklet spends the rest of its pages alternating between Aunt Matilda's recipes and testimonials from customers who have used the soap. Some of the recipes included are: Pea Soup, Pepperpot, Broiled Salmon, Roast Duck, Chicken Croquettes, Lobster Salad, and Lemon Pie. It is unclear if the title of the booklet was meant as a play on words or a spelling mistake, after all it is full of recipes and 'receipts' from Dobbins' Electric Soap's customers in the form of testimonials. On the inside front cover, I. L. Cragin states if you buy fifteen bars of their soap, and mail in the wrappers as proof, they will send you a dollars worth of "first class sheet music for free!" Also there is an advertisement for J.Silver & Son of New Ipswich, N.H., a grocery and general store. The advertisement states that if you buy seven bars of soap from them you can get seven "beautiful Shakespeare cards". Very good, in publisher's black-titled yellow-ish cream colored wrappers. [OCLC locates ten copies].

Cover depicts California Poppies with inset of sun rising over the mountains. The title page reads "Have you had a kindness shown? Pass it on. "Twas not given for you alone--Pass it on. Let it travel down the years, Let it wipe another's tear, 'Til in heaven and the deed appers--Pass it on. The content is daily inspirations by an array of authors including Ruskin, Robert Louis Stevenson, Milton, Kingsley, Sarah f. Adams and many more. Cynthia May Westover Alden, nee Cynthia May Westover (1862-1931) American social worker and journalist whose energies in the latter half of her life focused on securing the welfare of blind infants and children. She married John Alden, later editor of the Brooklyn Eagle, in 1896, and about that time she began sending Christmas cards to shut-ins. A group of fellow journalists then organized themselves as the Sunshine Society to carry on and enlarge the scope of the practice. Alden spread the word through her Recorder column and continued her involvement when she moved to the New York Tribune in 1897 and to the Ladies Home Journal in 1899. The International Sunshine Society, incorporated in 1900, was headed by Alden for the rest of her life. In 1902 the society established a sanatorium in Bensonhurst for blind children (in 1917 it became Harbor Hospital), and in 1905 a nursery and a kindergarten for blind children were established in Brooklyn. In 1910 the Sunshine Arthur Home for blind babies was established in Summit, New Jersey, and over a period of years the society's efforts led to legislation providing care for blind infants and children in 18 states. Alden's other books include Women's Ways of Earning Money (1904) and The Baby Blind (1915). By the time of her death the International Sunshine Society had 500 local branches in 38 states as well as branches in 8 foreign nations. (excerpts from Encyclopaedia Britannica).
