Description
Chicago: Meyer & Brother, 1893 First edition. Publisher's reddish-purple cloth stamped in gilt with portrait of Amanda Smith. . Octavo. With frontisportrait and twenty-five full-page engravings. Slight edgewear. Dark blue coated endpapers. Some marginal toning, as usual. A very good, clean copy of this important autobiography of a Black preacher and missionary. Amanda Berry Smith (1837 - 1915) was a missionary, Methodist preacher, evangelist for the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and founding member of the Federation of Colored Women's Clubs. Smith was born into slavery in Maryland and, after her father bought the freedom of their family, she married a Methodist deacon and became a preacher in black churches in New York and New Jersey. Smith spent eight years as a missionary in West Africa and, upon returning to the United States, established the Amanda Smith Industrial Orphan Home, an orphanage and school for Black children in Chicago. The Amanda Smith Industrial Orphan Home, founded in 1899, appears in 'Efforts for Social Betterment Among Negro Americans' (1909), the report of an Atlanta University sociological study directed by W.E.B. Du Bois. Between 1899 and 1909, the orphanage had housed and educated sixty Black children. In this book's introduction, Smith's colleague Bishop J.M. Thorburn attested to Smith's striking presence and command of an audience: "During the many years that I have lived in Calcutta, I have known many famous strangers to visit the city…but I have never known anyone who could draw and hold so large an audience as Mrs. Smith," (p. vi).

Description
Chicago: The University of Chicago Press. Very Good. 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [front hinge starting, other than that quite a decent copy with only light external wear]. (The University of Chicago Social Service Series) Series From the Preface: "This is not a book of 'readings.' It is a source book, compiled to make available for students of immigration a collection of published documents and hitherto unpublished case records that will throw light on some of the historical, legal, and social aspects of the subject." The author goes on to credit her sister, Grace Abbott, "who was from 1908 to 1921, except for an occasional leave of absence, in charge of the work of the Immigrants' Protective League and the Immigrants' Commission. Many of the social case records I have used were selected for me by my sister, and I have also had the benefit of her suggestions and criticisms." (Both Abbott sisters, by the way, rate pretty extensive Wikipedia entries. And both were born in Grand Island, Nebraska -- just a bit up the road from where I was raised.) The material is presented under three broad headings: (1) The Journey of the Immigrant; (2) The Admission, Exclusion, and Expulsion of Aliens"; and (3) Domestic Immigration Problems. The administrative nuts and bolts of the individual case records make for fascinating reading. (I'm not kidding.) ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." You can access this catalog and its contents in any one of three ways: (1) email us to request a PDF to be emailed to you; (2) view or download the catalog from the link on our website's main page; (3) browse the books individually (including a few that didn't make the cut for the catalog) on our website under these two subject headings: "Immigration: Fiction" and "Immigration: Non-fiction." .

Description
Cologne: Wienand Verlag, 2014. As-new in shrinkwrap. 4to. 103 pages. Boards; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION. "Michael Raedecker occupies his own unique position within the field of contemporary painting: essentially dedicated to figuration, he replaces the concrete surroundings of his motifs with fields of color. His houses, plants, and laundry pieces can be understood as critical analyses of painting and pictorial composition and are often characterized by a mystical atmosphere. Typical of Raedecker s works is the combination of paint and thread. The contours of his motifs are developed as three-dimensional drawings with the aid of colored woolen threads embroidered into the canvas. This comprehensive exhibition catalog features the artist s works from Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen and the Sprengel Museum in Hannover" (the publisher).

First edition. 1/4 inch tear to jacket corner, owner bookplate with name inked out on front endpaper. 1994 Hard Cover. xiv, 344 pp. 8vo. From the jacket: ''I want to give something back,' the author insisted. His counselor at the Vet Center suggested, 'You can give the guys in treatment hope. You know what PTSD looks like from both sides. You can tell these guys what it's like, and what's different when you get beyond it.' Ron Zaczek had been a good crewchief. He was 'Zack' then: Marine Observation Squadron Three, '66-'68; Phu Bai, Dong Ha, Khe Sanh; 393 missions in Huey medevacs and gunships; 19 Air Medals and a Bronze Star. He'd succeeded in college and in industry. Good marriage, two fine kids. Then things began to fall apart. Too much anger, depression. Thoughts of suicide. So many missions of mercy, and death, returning in nightmare and flashback, out of control: 'You gotta get us out, Scarface. We're burning up!' Marine crewchiefs never lost control! Control was survival, and Zack was trained to survive. He entered the Vet Center Outreach Program as a last resort, not believing it could help. Farewell, Darkness is a probing, personal look at war's psychological toll. Told with a vision of healing and hope, Zaczek's story captures the passion and idealism he felt as a 19-year-old Marine new to war, his pride in doing a job well, his fear and perseverance in the face of enemy fire, his grief over the loss of friends, and the anger and sadness of his homecoming. The reader lives Zaczek's brutal, honest journey through war as well as his treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
