Description
[England?], 1837. Good +. 11¾" x 21", in frame measuring 13½" x 23¾". Manuscript map in pen and ink, highlighted in pink, yellow, and blue. Good plus: not examined outside of frame, a few tears, chips and small losses. This is an exquisite world map in pen and ink. We think it's English in origin as there is a notation on the far left of the equator in the Western Hemisphere which reads "Longitude West from London." We imagine the artist used a map dated 1824 or earlier, as Australia is drawn as "New Holland" whereas "Australia" was officially adopted by the British in 1824. Everything West of the Mississippi is denoted as "New Mexico," North and South America are outlined in yellow, while Africa and New Holland are outlined in blue.

Description
London: Geo. Strahan, 1726. Cheyne, George (1671-1743). (1) Tractatus de infirmorum sanitate suenda, vitaque producenda. [44], 248pp. London: George Strahan, 1726 (2) De natura fibrae ejusque laxae sive resolutae morbis tractatus. [2], vii, 98, [2, adverts.]pp. London: George Strahan and James Leake, 1725. Together 2 works in 1, 8vo. 197 x 116 mm. Calf ca. 1726, gilt spine, very slight wear. Fine. First Edition in Latin of (1); First Edition of (2). One of the most widely read medical authors in England, Cheyne began producing a series of popular treatises on health beginning in the 1720s, including An Essay on Health and Long Life (1724), the Latin translation of which (by John Robertson) appeared two years later. Like his other medical works, Cheyne's Essay was essentially a practical guide strongly emphasizing moderation in diet and alcohol consumption-a personal issue for Cheyne since he himself struggled with obesity, at one point weighing over 400 pounds! The Latin edition of Cheyne's Essay was issued together with the first edition of his De natura fibrae: "[Cheyne] was much committed to directing attention from the body's fluids to its fibrous solids, his uncited guide in this matter almost certainly being the influential Leiden professor Herman Boerhaave. Cheyne's most elaborate development of his views on the bodily fibers was contained in the treatise De natura fibrae" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). .

Description
Atlanta: Southern Regional Council, April 1, 1960. Very good.. [2],6,xxv leaves printed on rectos only, stapled, with "Special Report" wrapper. Minor wear, light soiling. The revised edition of a special report on the student protests and sit-ins that occurred in early 1960 in the American South. The report was issued on April 1, 1960 and covers the background, principal events, legal precedents, public reaction, patterns, spread, and more related to student protests that had just taken place in February and March. The work concludes with a seven-page "Chronological Listing of the Cities in which Demonstrations Have Occurred," beginning with the lunch counter sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina. The report opens by stating that the Greensboro protest sparked similar demonstrations in more than sixty-five Southern cities, and that "state and local law enforcement authorities showed an obvious intent to place the power of the state against the right of the Negroes to express dissent." One of the central issues, according to the text, is that the protest movement "is no longer between citizens, but has become a struggle between Negro citizens and state power." The Southern Regional Council was established in 1944 as a majority-white interracial organization. When the council decided to publicly condemn segregation in 1949, it cost the organization about half of its membership. Thereafter the SRC was generally supportive of efforts by African Americans and others to end legal segregation. The council also issued numerous reports on various conditions or efforts to improve conditions in the South. OCLC records ten copies of the present work.

Description
Berkeley CA: Samisdat Press, 1974. First Edition. First Printing. Publisher's pale green wraps, titled and decorated in black to spine and front board, with a reproduction of the author's USMC telegram notifying his parents of him taking a shrapnel wound to the stomach to the rear wrap. A touch of fading here and there, with soome very light shelfwear, but a very good, strong copy. 116pp. Internally clean. Signed by the author to the title page. One peculiarity is that the final leaf of the story "Diehard" has been typed manually and added to the volume at the rear (where a printed leaf would belong) with no sign of an "original" leaf being missing. Whether this was a later fix from a previous owner, or something done in house due to a binding error is difficult to establish, especially with "homemade" publishing. This is the first appearance of "A Few Good Men", a series of short, vicious little war stories that are amongst the clearest invocations of the prevalent lunacy present in the canon. It was eventually reprinted in a book form in 1978 by Morrow/Avon, this first appearance seems elusive, especially signed.

Description
Montgomery, Alabama: Black Belt Press, 1995. First Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's gray cloth titled in black to spine. Dustjacket. [xvi]; 400pp. Light bumping to spine ends and some very light soiling in places, in a bright, clean dustjacket, internally clean, a near fine copy. Inscribed by the author to the half title: "To Walter Burch, Keep up the Work, Fred W. Gray 4/27/95" The Walter Burch in question is almost certainly the man who was originally part of the Greensboro PD and was a witness to (and professonal participantin) the manner in which the South treated those who defied the shackles and chains of "tradition" and in later life seems to have developed an intense interest and sympathy in the cause. Mr. Burch's LEO history is also possibly the reason for the unusual "keep up the work" inscription, rather than the more usual "good work" phrasing; Mr. Gray had more than earned the right to a healthy skepticism, but they both would have been men of advanced years at this point. Fred Gray was, among many other things connected to the African American struggle for Civil Rights, a lawyer who worked with MLK Jr., prosecuted on the Tuskegee Syphilis revelations on behalf of men who had been in the program, the desegregation of schools in Albama, the 1965 Selma March, and was the defense lawyer for Rosa Parks in her trial for breaking the segregated seating laws on Montgomery public transport. At just about every major flashpoint in the mid 20th century history of civil rights, Fred Gray was present, standing up, and being counted.

Very good. Lohr "became one of the world's foremost authorities on Medieval Western Aristotelianism." "In an incredible academic accomplishment, he catalogued nearly all the Latin commentaries on the works of Aristotle from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. "It was a great intellectual project and became an incredible work of reference," said Jesuit Father Joseph E. Lienhard, professor of theology and the journal's current managing editor. "He considered the collection to be the scholarly achievement of his life."" / In Memoriam, Lohr, Charles H. (Father), Jesuits.
