Description
Guadalajara: En la Oficina de Don Mariano Rodriguez, 1821. Very good.. [6],18,22pp. Disbound, with later gutter staples. Very faint staining to title page. Two pin-sized worm holes at lower right margin, not affecting text. Minor foxing. An enthusiastic sermon given in the Cathedral of Guadalajara on June 23, 1821, in support of Mexican independence and the Army of the Three Guarantees. In February of that year, Iturbide and Guererro had joined forces against the Spanish crown and promulgated the Plan of Iguala, which called for "Religión, Independencia, y Unión" in Mexico. Their army steadily advanced towards Mexico City before achieving decisive victory at Azcapoltzalco on August 19. The present oration, given in the midst of that advance, uses 1 Peter 2:17 ("Fraternitatem diligite, Deum timite, Regem honorificate...") to give religious legitimacy and foundation for the Plan of Iguala and the Army of the Three Guarantees. A scarce Guadalajara imprint; OCLC locates four copies at U.S. institutions -- Yale, Illinois Chicago, Berkeley, and Indiana.
