Description
London: Impensis G. Bishop, 1601. FIRST EDITION, second issue with cancel title page. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary English calfskin, ruled in blind, re-backed and re-cornered in morocco. An excellent copy internally with very minor faults. A few signatures have very marginal damp-stains, there are occasional rust spots, minor marginal tears, and a few natural paper flaws (no loss to text.) The first title page features an elaborate architectural border with Solomonic columns. "The 'Natural History' of Pliny the Elder is more than a natural history: it is an encyclopaedia of all the knowledge of the ancient world... It comprises 37 books with mathematics and physics, geography and astronomy, medicine and zoology, anthropology and physiology, philosophy and history, agriculture and mineralogy, the arts and letters... The 'Historia' soon became a standard book of reference; abstracts and abridgements appeared by the third century. Bede owned a copy, Alcuin sent the early books to Charlemagne, and Dicuil, the Irish geographer, quotes him in the ninth century. It was the basis of Isidore's Etymologiae and such medieval encyclopedias as the Speculum Majus of Vincent of Beauvais and the Catholicon of Balbus. One of the earliest books to be printed at Venice, the centre from which so much of classical literature was first dispensed, it was later translated into English by Philemon Holland in 1601, and twice reprinted (a notable achievement for so vast a text)... Over and over again it will be found that the source of some ancient piece of knowledge is Pliny." (PMM 5) "Holland's first book, the first complete rendering of Livy into English, was published in 1600 when he was nearly fifty. It was a work of great importance, presented in a grand folio volume of 1458 pages, and dedicated to the queen. ... "The Livy was followed in the next year by an equally huge translation, of the elder Pliny: The Historie of the World, Commonly called, the Naturall Historie. This encyclopaedia of ancient knowledge about the natural world had already had a great indirect influence in England, as elsewhere in Europe, but had not been translated into English before, and would not be again for 250 years."(ODNB).

Description
(NAPOLEON's Memoirs) Guerre d'Orient. Three volumes, including a folio atlas with 18 double-page maps by Alexandre Moisy, also including a partially printed proof duplicate of map 11: Siége de Saint-Jean-de-d'Acre laid inside rear cover (split at center fold). 8vo, [iii], lv 406pp + errata - [iii] 455pp + errata; both volumes bound with original printed front and rear wrappers, later blue cloth with gilt-titled spines, ex-libris label Mario e Fiammetta Witt to front pastedowns, the atlas volume in gilt leather-backed marbled boards (spine lightly chipped at ends, scuffed at ribs), the title-page with PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION at the top: "A Mr Rapette souvenir affectueux Genl Bertrand". First and only edition of Napoleon's memoirs during his French campaign in Egypt and Syria as dictated to his general and grand maréchal du palais Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844) during his exile at St. Helena (1815-21). Bertrand was the only companion in exile with Napoleon to have participated in this earlier campaign. Its publication 26 years after Napoleon's death was due to the initiative of Bertrand's son General Henri Alexandre Arthur Bertrand who inscribed it to its first owner. The two volumes of text present an ample, if subjective account of these famous military campaigns, enriched with transcripts of numerous official documents and letters relating to the events described. The 18 maps are mostly in direct connection with the campaign. Including a general map of the south-eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, a map of the Mediterranean with the movements of the French and British fleets, a map of Egypt, a map of Syria and the Middle East, maps of the invasion of Malta, the Battle of the Nile, the Battle of the Pyramids, the Siege of Acre (with an engraved veduta of the city), the Battle of Mount Tabor, and the Battle of Aboukir. Four maps of parts of Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands represent additional theatres of War during the Second Coalition in 1799.

1972. [Women's History] [Comic] Famous 1st Edition oversized 30th year anniversary reprint of Sensation Comics No. 1, originally published in January 1942 by DC Comics. 1972. Measures 10" x 13.75". As part of the Limited Collectors' Bronze Mint Series, this edition faithfully reproduces the debut of Wonder Woman in Sensation Comics, marking her first major solo appearance following her initial introduction in All Star Comics No. 8. The cover, featuring Wonder Woman in her iconic red, blue, and gold costume, depicts her leaping into action, deflecting bullets with her bracelets while subduing criminals. Inside, the comic presents early Golden Age stories of Diana Prince, an Amazonian warrior from Paradise Island, who arrives in the modern world to champion justice and fight for peace. This collector's edition maintains the original artwork and storytelling from the early 1940s while introducing a new generation of readers to the origins of one of DC Comics' most enduring Superheroes. The Famous First Edition series was produced in the 1970s to celebrate key milestones in comic book history, with the first edition in very good condition having sold in 2020 for $120,000, and another in excellent condition sold in 2016 for $290,000. This particular issue remains a significant part of Wonder Woman's publishing legacy and this 30th year anniversary collector's edition retains a valuable piece of women's history. In overall very good condition.

Portland: Nazraeli Press, 2009. First Edition, 349/500. [13]pp. Duodecimo [19 cm] Burgundy boards with the title in white on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. 12 four-color plates and one signed original print at the rear. Additionally signed by the artist on the title page. Steampunk aesthetic in these imaginative "found" cdvs that depict Victorian robots and automatons. "This collection documents a sampling of carte de visites selected to show the range of cultures and roles filled by these mechanical creations. The carte de visite was an immensely popular form of photography invented by Disderi in France in 1854. The name comes from the size of the cards: approximately that of a visiting card. They were widely traded and collected with subjects ranging from portraits of everyday people to that of luminaries of the times. Memory and change now marched hand in hand, creating the world we live in today and leaving behind worlds that only exist in images." Edward Bateman is an artist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Utah. He received his MFA from the University of Utah in 2003 and joined the faculty in 2008. That same year he was awarded the Salt Lake City Mayor's Award for his contributions to the arts. In 2009, Nazraeli Press released a book of his work titled Mechanical Brides of the Uncanny, which is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard University, Art Institute of Chicago, Stanford University, Getty Research Institute, New York University, Columbia University, Amon Carter Museum Library, and George Eastman House, among others. In 2010, he was a visiting professor at the Kaunas Faculty of the Vilnius Art Academy in Lithuania. In 2012, he was profiled in the UK publication Printmaking Today, the authorized journal of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Also in 2012, he was one of four professors recognized by the University of Utah for an Early Career Teaching Award. His work has been shown internationally in twenty-two exhibitions in seventeen countries and is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Getty Research, the Pforzheimer Collection of the New York Public Library, Cornell University, Brown University, and others.
