Description
Brooklyn: [Fowler & Wells], 1856. Second edition. Very Good. Second edition, one of only 1,000 copies rumored to have been printed, per Myerson. iv, 5 - 384, [1] pp, tissue-guarded frontispiece, advertising page at rear. Bound in publisher's green cloth, blindstamping to boards, gilt stamping to front board and spine. All edges speckled red, yellow endpapers. Very Good, skillfully rebacked with original spine cloth laid over. Mottling and fading to cloth, fraying at corners and head and tail of spine, slight bumping to corners. Overopened in several places with stitches showing, contents foxed. Occasional pencil marks to margins and penciled numbers to verso of advertising page. An extremely scarce and very early edition of Walt Whitman's iconic poetry collection. Published one year after the first edition, this edition contains 20 new poems and a new portable format. The publishers withheld their names due to the controversial reviews of the first edition, and the second edition sparked yet more controversy. Critics objected to the sexual themes of some of the poems, and to Whitman's inclusion of Ralph Waldo Emerson's letter of praise, one line from which -- "I greet you at the beginning of a great career" -- is boldly excerpted on the spine, designed by Whitman himself. It has been called the first publishing "blurb," although the term wouldn't be invented for another 50 years. The tide finally turned with the publication of the third edition in 1860, which won more positive notice.
