Description
New York: Jack Green, 1965. Near fine.. Complete run of one of the rarest and more unusual journals of the mimeo revolution. NEWSPAPER published seventeen issues from editor Green's Village apartment between 1957 and 1965, at which point Green ceased publication and refunded his subscribers. Best remembered today for almost single-handedly establishing the reputation of William Gaddis' THE RECOGNITIONS through Green's thorough and devastating deconstruction of the novel's negative reviews (originally published in Newspaper 12-14, reprinted as FIRE THE BASTARDS in 1992), as well as (most infamously) his 1962 full-page ad in the VILLAGE VOICE extolling the work's virtues, Green's eccentric journal also covered topics as diverse as Joyce and Faulkner, voting and peyote, William Reich (frequently), and insurance. "[P]art conceptual art, part political tract, and part 'zine [...] 'Green' used his underground tabloid for cultural commentary and deliciously satirical (yet superbly well-documented) assaults" (Clay and Phillips p. 77). A very fragile production of which not many survived; this is among the finest we've seen. Individual issues are scarce (we've handled only a handful in almost 15 years of looking), and runs of any kind rare. Ephemeral and elusive. 14'' x 8.5''. Top-stapled legal-sized mimeo. All issues heavily toned as usual, with some minor chipping to edges of some issues. One issue had two illustrations tipped onto the front page: both present, but glue tender. About half the issues unfolded (typically not so) and very clean. [WITH]: rare example of one of Green's occasional one-page "supplements," which summarizes previous issues and provides ordering information. Overall a sound set of a very fragile production.

Description
1847. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1847. 4+32+1 pp Vol I ads dated January 1847. Original drab boards with purple ribbed cloth spines and printed spine labels, title pages printed in black and red. First Edition of this supernatural tale about the goings-on in a haunted castle -- with the opening line (borrowing from a notorious 1830 Bulwer-Lytton novel) "It was an awfully dark and tempestuous night...". James (1800-1860) trained for medicine but became a prolific novelist after meeting Sir Walter Scott; James's 40 three-volume novels, most of them historical, exceeded the number written by Scott himself. In 1845 he and his family made a planned short visit to Germany so that he could do research for a novel, but two of the children's illness detained them there for a year, where he wrote two tales including this one. (In 1850 James and his family moved to Massachusetts; two years later, he was appointed British Consul in Norfolk, where over the next seven years his health suffered from the climate (read: yellow fever), so much so that he requested and got a transfer to Venice; however they arrived there just as that city was besieged, and he died of ill-health within months.) This set is in remarkably near-fine condition, with a little wear at the spine ends and some (typical) fading of the purple cloth. Whoever first read this had little patience: except for the first 30 or so pages of Vol I, the leaves of all three volumes remain unopened. Sadleir 1251; Wolff 3503 (a rebound copy); Ashley (Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction) p. 103 ("his masterpiece of terror... a superb portrayal of a ghost-ridden castle spoiled only at the end by its natural solution"); Punter (The Literature of Terror) p. 174 ("a Radcliffean tale of the explained supernatural"); Bleiler 900 ("A haunted chapel with bats and spectral lights, phantom figures in armor who hold ghostly court..., skeletons, the Black Rider, spectral music are only a few in a long list of phenomena.").

Description
Hudson, 1938. Chip with loss to corner, discoloration to lower portion, overall good with fine contrast. Good.. An advertisement for a game between the barnstorming team the Mohawk Colored Giants and Washington D.C's Hillsdale Club, taking place in the Colonels’ stadium near Hudson, New York in 1938.[1] The Giants reformed in 1929 after an initial stint in Schenectady in 1913–1914, and were active for around fifteen years. Washington, D.C. had a robust network of African American teams during the period. Sam Lacy, who played semi-professional baseball after college, apparently played for the club at one point.[2] We find no record of the “South Atlantic” division, but it could very likely have been hyperbole to build enthusiasm for the game. [1] “Mohawk Colored Giants vs. Hillsdale,” Hudson Evening Register (Hudson, NY), August 25, 1938, sports section, listing games scheduled for Friday, August 26, 1938. Description
London: Harrods, Ltd, 1911. First Edition. Wraps. Two staples. Very Good. All the tchotschkes one sees at antique stores relating to the Royal Family and then some, all sold by the legendary department store in connection with the coronation of George V and Queen Mary. Categories listed on the first page (page 3) are Public Decorations, Illuminations, Pavilions and Marquees Erected, Artistic Decorations of Every Description, Armorial Shields, Rich Draperies, Banners, Mottos, Heraldic Trophies, Flags, Pennants, Floral Displays, Decorative Illuminations for Buildings, Parks and Gardens, Electric, Gas, Candle Lighting and Transparencies, Temporary Ball Rooms complete with every requisite, Coronation Souvenirs, Medals and Novelties of every kind." To be more specific about products not so obviously on this list, the products include toy flags, plaques and medallions, Printed in full color, with 27 of the pages qualifying as color plates, with all or almost all of the page taken up with a colored display of products, generally photos processed to look a bit like drawn illustration, or truly drawn illustration. And surprisingly scarce, given the prestige and prominence of Harrods. No copies listed on OCLC First Search, nor any found in internet commerce on the date this description was drafted. Oblong, 21.5 by 28 cm. 3-36 pp. (Wraps were counted in pagination in the front.) Front cover has mounted color illustration of a smartly dressed attractive couple waving from a balcony overlooking the parade route, and the title page within has a soft focus impressionistic color illustration of a larger group of mostly female spectators gathered on a grand balcony, all sporting the large feather-y hats of the day. The last page of the catalogue, finally, is given over to four lush color illustrations of Harrods' patrons in the inviting ultra-luxe parts of the store -- the restaurant, the flower and fruit department, the millinery department, the Royal Exchange -- we presume that this last department handled payments and the like in the days long before the advent of credit cards. Otherwise, the illustrations of the many things on offer are based on or derived from photographs. We are including with this catalogue, which is complete, a four page folded sheet, each of its four pages about the same page size of those in the catalogue, and each page with photographs of medals and ribbons created for the event, and a smattering of other things -- spoons, cigarette cases, etc. These pages look as if they could have been pulled out from the catalogue, but that isn't the case. Just an additional piece of promotional literature, perhaps a supplement. The wraps reattached to the rest of the text block with archival tape, front and rear. Front cover has a narrow chip on top edge. Light foxing to wraps, mostly on rear cover. Glossy leaves within mostly clean. The four page separate promotion is rougher, with shallow closed tears and a good bit of dusty soiling.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1934. Very Good/Very Good -. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1934. First Edition Stated. Octavo; publisher's cloth, red topstain, in pictorial dust jacket retaining original price ($2.50), decorative map endpapers; vii,[3],303pp. Wear to jacket margins including closed tears and chips with extensive old tape repairs to verso, spine panel quite toned, cloth spine darkened and corners bumped, else a Very Good copy in a Good to Very Good example of the scarce dust jacket. Inscribed and signed on front free endpaper in year of publication to the author's fellow New York Times drama critic Lewis Nichols, "with gratitude for many kindnesses including the chore of reading proof. Sincerely, Brooks Atkinson / Oct. 24, 1934." Also laid in a later (1969) typed letter to Nichols in the original postally used envelope congratulating him on his retirement but declining to attend the retirement party, "I don't drive any more than I absolutely have to these days, since my eyes are not what they used to be, and New York traffic scares the hell out of me." Atkinson also apologizes to Nichols for abruptly leaving his job as theatre critic to travel around the world (the result of which was this book). "When I went off to China I really put you on the spot in a way that was unforgivable. I wrote an enthusiastic Sunday piece about The Skin of Our Teeth which you had to review when it opened on Broadway. But I hope some of the other things you had to review provided compensation. You had Oklahoma!, Carousel and the visit of the Old Vic and other wonders that I have forgotten.
