Description
New York: Harper Brothers, 1960. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good+ dust jacket. Jacket with some rubbing, chipping, and shelfwear to the spine ends, corners, and edges. Inscribed on the front endpaper: "To James Corman with regards and best wishes, Jack Kennedy." Housed in a custom black quarter-leather slipcase with chemise. The recipient James C. Corman (1920-2000) was then-Los Angeles City Councilman. As a California Congressman he later had a significant impact on the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Corman served in the House of Representatives for California from 1961 to 1981. He "helped steer the 1964 Civil Rights Act to passage... He was one of ten members appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Kerner Commission, which investigated the causes of race riots in scores of cities in 1967 and concluded that the country was becoming 'two societies, one black, one white - separate and unequal'. He gave crucial support to civil rights causes and furthered the 1964 legislation as a member of the Judiciary Committee" (New York Times obituary, 5 January 2001). In the 1970s he campaigned for welfare reform, reflecting his upbringing as a Kansas miner's son who moved to California in the Depression. He was an important ally to Jimmy Carter, but lost his seat alongside Carter's defeat, and the move of California to Reagan and the Republicans. A collection of John F. Kennedy's stirring and powerful political speeches, The Strategy of Peace emphasized the president's belief that "the freely spoken and freely challenged word" were cornerstones of democracy. Included within are addresses to the Senate, public speeches on foreign and domestic policy, and JFK's thoughts on the leading questions of his own turbulent era. Near Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

Description
ca1820. As accomplished.. Fine.. Watercolor portrait meas. appx. 185 x 148 mm.. It is on a stiff paper board. Sir Thomas Gresham was councillor, and financier in Elizabethan England as well as the founder of the Royal Exchange. Numerous portraits exist. Hilton made this skillful and appealing watercolor from the attributed Holbein portrait in the Mercers' Company Hall in London. It was once part of the Elhanan Bicknell collection (sold by Christies in a named sale in April of 1863). The watercolor was framed (since removed and retained) and a thin, solid oak board (retained) once served as a seal to the back of the frame. The board has two labels affixed to it. One label appears to be an original gum label with 5 handwritten lines identifying the work and artist. The second is a twentieth century typed label assigning a registration number and identifying the portrait. HIlton was best known for his historically themed works and came from that British school of "effortless" watercolorists at the end of the 18th century. He was a friend of Keats and is also known for the portrait of him. DNB VIII, 585-596; DNB IX, 887-888 (Hilton).

Description
Paris: [Printed by P. Didot l'aîné for] Ant. Aug. Renouard, 1811. 200 x 125 mm. (7 7/8 x 5"). Two volumes. HANDSOME BLUE MOROCCO BY BEDFORD (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in), French fillet borders, raised bands, compartments gilt with central pomegranate tool surrounded by floral tools and sprays, gilt lettering, lacy gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt. With frontispiece portrait in volume I and eight plates before letters after Moreau le Jeune. Front pastedowns with the bookplate of John Roland Abbey. Cohen-de Ricci 463; Vicaire III, 1131. Covers with just a couple negligible imperfections, plates a little foxed, a handful of trivial spots or smudges elsewhere, otherwise quite a fine and handsome copy--clean, fresh, and bright internally, in lustrous bindings--exactly the kind of books you'd expect J. R. Abbey to own.Produced by a bibliophile for bibliophiles, this is, in Brunet's opinion, the best and most complete edition of the works of Gresset, and our copy is offered with fine provenance and in elegant bindings. Jesuit poet Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset (1709-77) is best known for the first work here, the mock-heroic poem "Ver-Vert," which tells the story of a talented parrot, the conventual pet who has learned to repeat prayers and other pious phrases. Its owners take the parrot to a nearby convent to show off the bird's prowess, but during the journey, the parrot picks up startling new vocabulary and arrives cursing and swearing, much to the consternation of the nuns who brought it. The accompanying illustrations by Moreau le jeune illustrate with considerable charm the bird's fall from grace. A book collector turned publisher, bookseller, and bibliographer, Antoine-Augustin Renouard (1765-1853) was known for his collaborations with Moreau le jeune and other talented illustrators, as well as for issuing his books in various luxurious states. According to Vicaire, the present work was offered with or without engravings, on "papier vélin satiné" with engravings, or, as here, on that smooth, satiny paper with the plates before letters--at four times the price of the basic edition. Jean-Michel Moreau, known as Moreau le Jeune (1741-1814), provided illustrations for Diderot's encyclopedia and engraved works for François Boucher, in addition to illustrating the works of Rousseau and Voltaire. According to the Getty Museum, "publishers sought him out for his powers of observation and ability to capture nuances of gesture, pose, and light." Ray says that the best work by Moreau "showed him to be the equal of the established rococo masters Boucher, Eisen, and Gravelot," and that in his heyday, "he carried all before him." Our set was bound by Francis Bedford (1799-1883), who managed the firm of Charles Lewis for the latter's widow for five years and then was in a partnership for 10 years with John Clarke before establishing his own bindery in 1851. He shortly became recognized as the leading binder in fashionable West-End London, and his firm enjoyed prosperity not only until his death, but for a decade afterwards, under the ownership of Joseph Shepherd. Bedford bindings are almost always elegantly traditional in their design, as here, and they are consistently so well executed that their appeal to a wide audience has not diminished with the passage of time. Our copy was previously owned by John Roland Abbey (1894-1969), the most ambitious and successful English book collector of his time, whose library contained one of the finest collections of illustrated books and of fine and historic bindings ever assembled.

Description
1940. Original vernacular photograph archive of African American family c. 1940s. 21 silver gelatin photos ranging from 3.5 x 5 to 4.5 x 3 inches. 16 photo negatives, some are copies of the prints. Photos show family members posing individually and in groups, many in front of the same large white clapboard house with broad front porch, a garden to its side. In one photo two women in Sunday dresses and hats, one older, one younger, stand with linked arms, the younger woman's eyes hidden behind sunglasses, the older squinting into the sun with a rolled newspaper in one hand. Two images show the same woman in white 1940s bathing suit with sleeves and bloomers standing with her feet in the ocean, a small boy playing nearby. In one image he points at the horizon, in the next he crawls through the water. Group photo shows 12 subjects, young men and women in suits and dresses, the men with ties and hats, one posing with a cigar hanging from his mouth, smiling into the camera, their faces bright and relaxed. Subjects ages range from early childhood through old age. The University of Virginia's Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library describes "Black joy" as "a phrase used by historians to highlight the positive aspects of Black history separate from its suffering. Representations of African Americans living lives at once ordinary and inspired, both deeply personal and universal, is an integral piece of any American history archive.

Description
MATTHEW RIDGWAY (1895-1993). Ridgway was a United States Army general. He held a number of major commands, but was most famous for salvaging the United Nations effort in the Korean War.TLS. 1pg. 7 x 10. July 22, 1968. Pittsburgh. A typed letter signed Matthew Ridgway. The letter, on the Generals personal letterhead, stated who influenced his life the most: I find it very difficult to chose between Major General FRANK ROSS MCCOY and General of the Army GEORGE CATLETT MARSHALL, both now deceased. No doubt my father was the greatest single influence up to my mature years, but that is something an adolescent cannot accurately evaluate. Both General McCoy and General Marshall were possessed of all the attributes which I regard as constituting true greatness courage, integrity, professional competence of the highest order, vision, selflessness, modesty, compassion, willingness to accept responsibility. Of these two men, I believe my answer would be General McCoy, because I came under his influence at an opportune time early in my career; served in close association with him in both troop duty and on diplomatic missions. The letter has mailing folds and is in fine condition. A revealing letter.

Description
Florence: Insegna di Dante [printed by Felice Le Monnier], 1842. Edizione di proprietà dell'Autore. Good. Octavo (205 mm), 91, [3] pages. In original printed blue wraps. Pink paper backing . Well-read copy, with penciled ownership inscription of Patrizio Muschi, who was a prominent figure in literary circles in Siena in the middle of the 19th century. Occasional light foxing. This five-act tragedy in verse by the19th-century historian and Dante scholar Pietro Fraticelli is an account of the tyrannical and brutal dictatorship exercised over Florence by Walter VI, Count of Brienne in 1342 and 1343. Walter agreed to be installed as "Signore" (Lord) of Florence by the city's wealthy oligarchs for a defined period of one year in order to stanch the city's financial hemorrhaging. Walter presented himself as a populist, and at his inauguration the dense crowd in the piazza shouted "for life! for life!" IN the event, Walter was a brutal and despotic leader, using his office to increase his own wealth, instituting policies of arrest, torture, and murder of political enemies, and plunder for his soldiers in the provinces. The action of the drama tells how Florence freed itself of Walter's tyranny. The booklet was printed by the great Florentine publisher Felice Le Monnier (the firm is still active). This "author's edition" dated 1842 was followed by an edition bearing Le Monnier's standard imprint twenty years later. Le Monnier also published Ugo Foscolo's edition of Tasso's great epic, "Gerusalemme liberata," with historical notes by Pietro Fraticelli in appendix. OCLC lists the Harvard copy alone in North America, and few scattered copies in Italy.
