Description
London: Hugh Rees Ltd, 1930. FIRST EDITION. Complete with author’s portrait on frontispiece, 3 folding maps, 38 plates (31 colored) after G.E. Lodge, Roland Green and H. Gronvold, text illustrations throughout. Original green cloth, gilt lettering, some rubbing to corners and edges of spine; despite minor browning to preliminary and blank leaves, a very nice wide-margined copy, uncut, from the library of Dr. James M. Dolan Jr., with his blind-stamp on title page. First edition of the most systematic account on Egyptian birds. The work is based on Nicoll’s manuscript with notes and description of the Egyptian avifauna. The book first treats birds of ancient Egypt and the concept of bird protection. Some ninety species of birds in the paintings on ancient tombs are identified; it is noted that many species became extinct because of the disappearance of the papyrus thickets due to the aridity of the country. The majority of the text contains a fully annotated list of the birds of Egypt, and for each species there is a complete physical description, including plumage, as well as information on distribution, nidification and field characteristics. A full bibliography appears in one of the appendices. Nicoll (1880-1925), assistant director of the Zoological Gardens at Giza, was an outstanding naturalist. It had always been his intention to publish a detailed account of the birds of Egypt, but he died before the completion of this work. His friend Meinertzhagen (1878-1967), a British war hero and ornithologist, was approached by Nicoll’s widow to complete and publish the manuscript. Meinertzhagen was friends with many prominent figures such as Winston Churchill and T. E. Lawrence. He has been known as the spy who didn’t kill Hitler when he met him while carrying a loaded gun in his pocket. He wrote numerous papers for scientific journals such as the Ibis. Anker, 363; Casey Wood, 492.
