He further remarked on the specific apparatuses with which the silkworm is provided, among them the air ducts (tracheae) and the blood duct with a number of pulsating centers (corcula)" (DSB IX, p.65). Description
London: J. Wright; Philanthropic Reform, 1801. First editions. Two pamphlets bound together in modern quarter calf over marbled boards with morocco label to spine. Measuring 203 x 120mm and both collating complete: [4], 136; 27, [1, blank]. Toning throughout both tracts, with closed tears to pages 69-70 and 77-80 with no loss of text; contemporary pencil annotations throughout the first tract documenting one reader's responses to the controversial claims. Numbers 2 and 4 in ink to headers of each title suggest these were part of a larger compilation of legal tracts (likely the set of four that were offered for sale in the 1923 Walpole Galleries sale, which bear matching marks). Each scarce, OCLC reports approximately 20 copies of the first title and ESTC locates 3 copies of the second title; they are the only examples currently in trade. Two scarce pamphlets engaging in a longstanding debate about whether, how, and when divorce should be socially and legally acceptable. These two take up the issue of women's sexual agency, and Thoughts on the Propriety specifically espouses the notion that women who have engaged in adultery should not be allowed to divorce an existing spouse in order to marry a man with whom they've been unfaithful. Biblical justifications for this ban are presented throughout; but the hypocrisy woven into the argument makes it clear that its author is manufacturing a problem in order to punish and shame the few women for whom this circumstance even exists. Marriages, at the time, could only be dissolved through divorce in an Act of Parliament; thus, divorces were only available to the titled and the wealthy. Additionally, at the time of Thoughts on the Propriety's publication in 1800, no woman had ever successfully petitioned Parliament for divorce and been granted one. This landmark would come in 1801 (the year of publication for Nuptiae Sacra), when Jane Campbell successfully petitioned to divorce Edward Addison on the grounds of abuse. "Of the 314 divorce Acts issued before 1857, all but five were initiated by men. Of the five women who petitioned for divorce, Jane Campbell was the first to successfully unbind herself from her husband" (History of Parliament). Whether the author of Thoughts anticipated such a ruling or not, it is clear that the issue at stake was not so much women gaining divorces as women more openly at the turn of the century engaging in pre and extra marital sexual relationships or even in some cases paid sex work. This was, in fact occurring; and it was the subject of numerous satires, erotic works, and religious diatribes dealing with cuckoldry and whoredom. The desire to shame and control women who expressed sexual subjecthood, and the impulse to position them as the sinning parties (rather than the men who equally engaged in the behavior with them) is telling and predicts how future divorce laws would unfold.

Description
1865. Civil War military activity along the James River in Virginia documented in stereoscopic photographs produced near the end of the conflict. The images record Union engineering operations at Dutch Gap Canal and naval patrol activity along the James River while also capturing the presence of African American servicemen within Union forces. Following the authorization of the United States Colored Troops in 1863, thousands of Black soldiers served in the Union Army and participated in labor, engineering, and combat roles that supported military operations across the Confederacy. Photographs depicting African American soldiers in operational settings provide visual evidence of Black military service during the final years of the Civil War. Anthony, E. & H. T. The War for the Union. New York: E. & H. T. Anthony & Co., circa 1865. Pair of stereoview photographs mounted on yellow cardstock with printed series title and descriptive captions on recto and additional text on verso. The first stereoview titled "Dutch Gap Canal and Group of Soldiers. Taken after the bank was blown out" shows Union soldiers standing along the banks of the Dutch Gap Canal in Virginia. The canal project was ordered by Union General Benjamin Butler in 1864 as an engineering attempt to bypass Confederate artillery positions along the James River. Among the soldiers visible in the photograph is an African American serviceman positioned near the water holding a mooring line. Black soldiers frequently participated in engineering and labor details connected to Union fortification and canal construction projects during the war. The remaining bank formation in the image reportedly resembled the profile of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, a feature referenced in the printed caption. The second stereoview titled "Gun boats Undela and Maume, James River, Va." depicts two Union vessels anchored along the river while an African American soldier or sailor stands in the foreground observing the scene. The USS Maumee, a wooden steam powered gunboat commissioned in 1864, served in river patrol and blockade operations that helped maintain Union control of strategic waterways. During the later years of the Civil War the James River became a focal point for Union engineering projects and naval operations intended to secure transportation routes and weaken Confederate defenses around Richmond. The Dutch Gap Canal project represented one of the Union Army's largest wartime engineering efforts in Virginia, while naval patrols along the river protected supply routes and supported ground operations. Photographs from the War for the Union stereoview series circulated widely in the postwar period and provided visual documentation of military operations and landscapes associated with the conflict. Each stereoview measures approximately 7 x 3.25 inches and remains mounted on the original cardstock mounts with publisher imprint. Light toning, scattered discoloration, and minor wear to mounts visible with clear photographic detail retained. Overall very good condition. The pair preserves photographic evidence of Union engineering work and African American military presence during the final phase of the Civil War.

Paris: Payot & Cie, 1919, "troisieme mille", octavo, [6] [7] - 256, [2 blank] pp., original yellow printed paper wrappers, some dustiness to wraps, else very good. Important Source Book for W. E. B. Du Bois' The Black Man and the Wounded World This book was an important source book for W. E. B. Du Bois' The Black Man and the Wounded World: A History of the Negro Race in the World War and After, the work was of great personal importance to Du Bois, however, it remained unfinished. In the years during and immediately following World War I, W.E.B. Du Bois was deeply involved in organizing and writing a multi-volume work on the role of African Americans in the American Expeditionary Force. He hoped that African-Americans, through their participation in the conflict, would finally achieve their full rights of citizenship in the country they helped to defend. As Du Bois progressed on his work, he expanded his hopes that the participation of the soldiers of the African diaspora in the European conflict would result in the end of colonialism in Africa and better treatment for members of the African diaspora worldwide. The book also influenced Du Bois' own burgeoning Pan African movement which engaged him simultaneously, organizing two Pan-African Congresses in Paris and Lisbon. Part of this inspiration came from the book offered here. Alphonse Séché was a well-known Parisian journalist, poet, and playwright. He had commanded a regiment of Senegalese soldiers during the war. The book offered here is a combination memoir, history, and propaganda concerning the place of African soldiers in post-war French colonial life. The book has a preface by Séché's friend Charles Mangin, the architect of the French Force Noir. The book is not without its issues, including a paternalistic tone which falls flat today, but for Du Bois Séché's book had one major practical conclusion: "The war has revealed a new factor in French power, The Black Army, whose general valor, as much European, as Colonial, tested now, can no longer be doubted." For Du Bois the book was proof and served to countermand the disdain for Black troops exhibited by their white officer corps – something Du Bois saw first-hand and bitterly resented. Vindication of the African American soldier was the motivation behind Du Bois' work. For a complete study of Du Bois's efforts to complete his work see the recent excellent study by Chad L. Williams, The Wounded World W. E. B. Du Bois and the First World War (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2023) For Williams's treatment of Séché's work see pages 234-235.
