Description
New York: Tibor De Nagy Gallery, 1953. First edition of Ashbery's first book. One of 300 copies printed under the supervision of the artist Nell Blaine. Kermani A1. Presentation copy, inscribed on the title-page "To John B. / John Ashbery / 11/20/53 / 'What is it that you do,' I said, / 'And how is it you live?' / The answer trickled through his head / Like water through a sieve." Ashbery is here quoting four lines from "The Poem" by The White Knight from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, a poem which is deliberately - and deliberately confusingly - referred to by different names and which plays on the philosophical concept of "use-mention distinction". There is an angular ink mark pointing out where a space was omitted between two parts of the poem "Turandot", presumably by the poet. The recipient was John Baxter Black, a classmate of Ashbery's at Harvard. Wrappers cleanly splitting along spine, otherwise a bright copy of this fragile pamphlet with a few nicks and tiny closed edge-tears in wrappers. 8vo, original decorated stitched wrappers with printed paper label on front cover. Wrappers cleanly splitting along spine, otherwise a bright copy of this fragile pamphlet with a few nicks and tiny closed edge-tears in wrappers.

Description
MILHAUD, DARIUS. (1892-1974). French composer of Le Boeuf sur le toit, La Creation du Monde and other 20th-century repertoire staples; a member of Les Six. AMusMsS. ("D. Milhaud"). 3pp. Folio. (11" x 13 ¼"). N.p., [1941]. In French. Three pages of a musical manuscript scored for first violin entitled Trois Chanson de Ronsard, totaling 156 measures for three of the four poems: "A une Fontaine (Mouvt. de Valse)," "A Cupidon (Modéré)" and "Dieu vous gard' (Vif)." One of the 20th century's most prolific composers, Milhaud's modernist works bear the influence of Brazilian popular music as well as jazz and make innovative use of polytonality. A student of Charles Widor and Vincent d'Indy as well as a member of Les Six, Milhaud's pupils included Dave Brubeck, Burt Bacharach and Steve Reich. Milhaud first set the poetry of Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1585) to music in 1934 with his Les Amours de Ronsard. He drew further inspiration from the French poet to compose Quatre Chansons de Ronsard in 1941 for French coloratura soprano Lily Pons, known for her long association with the Metropolitan Opera. Our manuscript is accompanied by an ALS written by the copyist Alfons Wallis on August 27, 1841, who had been employed to make a copy of the works parts. "Milhaud wrote the parts himself – strange enough for such noted a composer. The publisher, however, thought they were not nice enough. Thus I had to copy them and was allowed to keep the originals…" Pons premiered the Chansons de Ronsard on December 8, 1941, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. Milhaud composed this work while living in California, having been forced from his native France by the Nazis. Though separated from the land and tradition which had been his greatest inspiration, Milhaud continued to compose, and teach at Mills College, where he had been offered a position upon his arrival. He returned to France in 1947. Neatly and darkly written on the rectos of three separate sheets of 12-stave printed music paper. The first page is lightly toned and all three sheets show some gentle wear. In fine condition; musical manuscripts of Milhaud are uncommon.

Description
Madrid: D[on] Francisco Martinez Dávila, 1814. Duodecimo (14 x 9.5 cm.), xxvi (sic, should be xxii), 152, [1] pages. Illustrated with a single wood engraved plate depicting twenty-one kitchen tools. A later edition of Altimiras' classic Spanish cookbook. Originally published in 1745 (that first edition known only by a single copy), this book revolutionized Spanish cuisine in the 18th century. Anne Willan writes that Spain, "with its empire faltering, and only one notable cookbook emerged." It reflects such popular tastes as seasoning with the medieval favorites, cinnamon and sugar... The distinguishing feature is a dozen groundbreaking recipes for tomatoes, showing an early acceptance in Spain of this New World novelty" (The Cookbook Library, page 228). Text block clean and sound; one corner tear to pages 31-32, not effecting the text. Contemporary Spanish tree calf, with gilt-titled red morocco spine label; marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to binding extremities, small split to top of front hinge. With a Roman bookseller's ticket and the small bookplate of Lord Westbury. [OCLC locates just one example of this 1814 printing (Biblioteca Nacional de Espana); there are just nineteen recorded copies combined for all thirteen printings between 1745 and 1822, and just five in the U.S.; Palau 8980 * 8981 (citing 1758 and 1760 editions); Pennell, My Cookery Books, page 168 (citing various editions); Willan, The Cookbook Library, page 228].

Description
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1950. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Quarter beige cloth with blue spine lettering and blue paper over boards, dust jacket. x, 83pp. Near fine/fine. Superb, tight first edition of this (to cite jacket front panel) "bold, thoughtful book by an outstanding citizen offering real hope for the future" published on the eve of the Korean War. Best of all, this special copy bears a fine presentation inscription from the author "To / Honorable Adlai E. / Stevenson / with the compliments / and best wishes of the / author. / Grenville Clark / Dublin, N.H. / May, 1952." Clark (1882-1967) was a high-level Wall Street attorney known for his work in international law and world peace initiatives who helped draft the United Nations charter; Stevenson (1900-65) was governor of Illinois and the Democratic presidential candidate. In 1945 Stevenson worked for U.S. Secretary of State Edward Stettinius along with Assistant Secretary of State Archibald MacLeish on an ambitious world peace organization -- an effort to create a successor to the failed League of Nations. He was then appointed Deputy United States Delegate to the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations Organization, later becoming head of the delegation. In this role he was instrumental in the creation of the United Nations and perhaps in this capacity Stevenson and Clark came to know each other.
