Description
Strasbourg: Ex officina...Martini Flach civis Argentinensis [i.e. Martin Flach], 20 September, 1500. SECOND OF TWO EDITIONS. The first was printed at Rome by E. Silber in May of the same year. No other editions were printed. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in modern vellum. A fine, clean copy with just some occasional, very mild foxing to the upper margin. The Hebrew passages have been transliterated rather than set in Hebrew characters. A methodical refutation of Rabbinic interpretations of the Book of Prophets. Each chapter opens with a passage from the Bible transliterated from Hebrew into the Latin alphabet, followed by its translation into Latin. The author, the converted Jew Johannes Baptista Gratiadei (or Graziadei), delivers, following each Bible passage, a rich anthology of Jewish exegesis, followed by a thorough refutation, bringing to bear Christian authorities and Aristotle. He cites the 11th c. French rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, better known by the acronym “Rashi”; the 12th c. Catalan rabbi, physician and kabbalist Moses ben Nachman, called Nachmanides; Maimonides, Levi ben Gershon (“Gersonides”), David Kimhi and other Jewish commentators. “In his prefatory epistle addressed to all Jews, Gratiadei writes that many friends have asked him why he converted; he says that he was brought to Christ neither by the desire for wealth or glory. He had long dedicated himself to the Hebrew exposition of the Old Testament and to Talmudic doctrine. However, at Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome (where Jews were compelled to listen to Christian sermons) he heard the Dominicans give Christian exposition of the words of the prophets concerning the coming of the Messiah. At first he considered these expositions alien to the true sense of the prophets and empty of faith (‘fidem vanam’). However, he began to have doubts, and looking into the words of the prophets he found the Christian expositions truer than those of the rabbis, whose perversion (‘pravitas’) of the meaning of the Biblical texts he detected. He began to see the truth in the Christian exposition of the texts. “In order to allow Jewish souls to embrace salvation, Gratiadei says that he will refute the ‘deformed errors and obstinacy which the rabbis impose upon’ their congregants. For while the rabbis say that the Messiah has not come, scripture is full of references to the Messiah that indicate that he is Jesus Christ. Although the Jews are in captivity for selling Christ for thirty pieces of silver, nevertheless there shall be knowledge of the savior across the whole world and, as the prophets say: ‘one pastor, one sheepfold’ (‘unus pastor: et unum ovile.’) “In his other prefatory letter, to Cardinal Bernardino López de Carvajal, Gratiadei writes that it is fitting that the matter of the Jews should be raised in the seventh year of the pope’s reign, since during the jubilee -traditionally celebrated every seven years- slaves were liberated. In the same way, the Jews might now be released from the servitude of their sins by reading Gratiadei’s book and converting. The book is also useful for Christians, who can now discern the disagreements of rabbis regarding the Hebrew prophets.”(Adapted from Bowd, A Database of Italian Humanists and Jews).

Description
1846. First Edition. DICKENS, Charles. Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son, Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846-48. Twenty parts in nineteen. Octavo, original green printed paper wrappers. Housed in custom cloth chemise and half morocco slipcase. $5500.First edition, first issue in scarce original parts of Dickens' novel of ""Pride,"" with 40 etchings by Hablôt Knight Browne (""Phiz""), including the famous first ""dark plate."" An excellent copy in the original parts, with all of the advertisements called for.For its inclusion of fairy-tale themes and the much discussed demise of Paul Dombey, Dombey and Son ""has a sense of the numinous, is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things, than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception, so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end, so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose"" (Ackroyd, 526). Dombey and Son ""was well received by its readers, and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity… Dickens told his first biographer, 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor [Martin Chuzzlewit] has done with Selfishness"" (Schlicke, 280). Dombey and Son contains the first of Browne's so-called ""dark plates"" (""On the dark Road,"" in part 18), created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate so as to heighten the contrast between black and white (Johannsen, Phiz, 309). First-issue text, with the following first-issue points: page 284 with ""Toot's Delight"" mentioned twice instead of ""Toot's Joy""; page 324 with ""Capatin"" on the last line; page 426 with blank space at the beginning of line 9; and two-line errata slip in the preliminary pages at the rear of Part 19/20, rather than eight. Text, preliminaries, and illustrations are all present, as are all wrappers. All advertisements called for are present. Hatton and Cleaver, 227-250. Only mild foxing to several plates, text generally clean. Some neat and unobtrusive repairs to several spines, light edge-wear and creasing to fragile paper wrappers, less than often seen. An exceptional copy in parts in the original wrappers, quite scarce and desirable with all advertisements.

Description
New York / New Jersey / Connecticut, 1915. Softcover. Very Good. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 7". Black cloth over flexible boards with two cut outs affixed to the cover. Contains 500 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 0.5" x 0.5" and 6" x 8" with some captions. Small tears and chips on the pages with several detached from the spine but present, very good with fine photographs. A young man's scrapbook and photo album during his time living in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut between 1904 and 1915. The first page features three men captioned, "The ‘Villan(sic)," "The Hero," and "The Comedian." These three men are seen throughout the album, especially the Villain and the Hero, as they are twin brothers. In one photograph there is a picture of both brothers with their younger sister sitting between them, "A rose between two thorns," captioned below. Most of the album features pictures of the young man spending time with friends, playing golf or tennis, driving his automobile, or playing the banjo. In several of the pictures he is seen working as a lifeguard and swimming or boating with his friends. Other photos show the interior and exterior of his family home near Sugar Loaf, New York. The book contains magazine and newspaper clippings as well as double exposure and hand cut photographs. The clippings range from cut outs of women and children, newspaper headers, small clips from articles, and poems. The young man had a pretty interesting life with several jobs and hobbies, one of which was his inclusions into the Royal Arch Masons, Chapter 265 with pamphlets tipped into the album. He also severed in a military band and later became a rifle ranger in Peekskill, New York and worked at the Orpheum Theatre in New York City. He worked as a lifeguard at the beaches and lakes near Rahway, New Jersey. And finally the album shows him settling in Stafford, Connecticut with his family and working at a car tire manufacturing shop. The oddest thing about the album is a few pages devoted to the women that the young man had some sort of romantic interest or activity with. He labels the pages as "Assorted Flavors" and "Ask the man who owns one" with over 50 women in total. Many of the photographs are posed, sometimes including himself with the women. He also has a couple pages devoted to several women he had longer relationships with, one of which is captioned, "A Safe and Sane Fourth" while another has a clipped poem about comfort next to one of the girl's pictures. On one page, he labels himself as "The Kiss Stealer," and is seen kissing a few different girls in each photo. An interesting scrapbook belonging to a young man from New York and detailing his life from 1904 through 1915, including his love interests, odd jobs, and misadventures.

Description
1898. Housman, Laurence. [H.M. Brock's copy] Engraved by Clemence Housman. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., 1898. 6+ pp undated ads. Original apple-green cloth pictorially decorated in dark green and gilt. First Edition. This was the third of Laurence Housman's four books of original fairy tales; the two earlier ones (same publisher and binding style) were A FARM IN FAIRYLAND (1894) and THE HOUSE OF JOY (1895); the later one (published by John Murray in decorated blue cloth) was THE BLUE MOON (1904). Many of these early stories had been inspired by [his sister] Clemence's peculiar taste for the bizarre, the passionate and the religious... She [author of THE WERE-WOLF] had an "inborn appetite, which she never lost, for heroes and heroines in suffering for the sins of others," he [Laurence] later recalled [Doyle]. Each of the ten chapters (five tales, of which one is divided into six parts) begins with a full-page plate; there are also two plates as frontispiece and title page. The twelve plates (plus initial letter designs) are engraved by Clemence (so indicated on the title page); in fact the book is also dedicated "To My Dear Wood-Engraver." This is a near-fine copy (one crease in the rear-cover cloth), unusually clean. Doyle pp 71-72. Provenance: the front free endpaper bears the signature of "H. M. Brock" (1875-1960), the British illustrator and landscape artist. Henry Matthew was one of four "Brock brother illustrators," the most-famous being C[harles]. E[dmund]., with whom he shared a studio beginning four years after this book was published. H.M. Brock is best-known for his illustrations for Victorian and Edwardian fiction -- including some Dickens novels, plus at least one Sherlock Holmes tale.

quarto, three pages, some toning to paper, splits along folds, mainly second leaf, integral address leaf somewhat soiled, else in good legible condition. "My dear Sir, … the people of the Borough of Harrisburg are mostly dutch – their manners & customs are peculiar to themselves and somewhat singular. Some of the neighboring towns are mountainous but the valleys are rich beyond belief as a general thing the farms are in advance of N York with their left handed plows and I should suppose wealthy. The river rose here about six feet tis over a mile wide without rain. So we suppose you must have had some rain in N.Y. Flour is $ 5.50. The market for everything one wants I think is generally higher than the Falls but within reach except Apples they are about 6/- pr bushel and small. I shall write you at some future day the progress of pump business – our prospect – wishes & wants… " The letter continues on pages 2 and 3 written by "Julia" the daughter of Mr. Wadsworth, who began the letter, and who provides a lively description of Harrisburg and its inhabitants to her uncle: "Dear Uncle, … The city of Harrisburg (or the borough as the Dutch say) I like very much the inhabitants are very different from us Yankeys; yet I think I shall be able to understand what they say after a while for let they say leave for said allow a shilling is a levy a sixpence fip, two shillings a quarter, If you should go to a store and trade eighteen pence then ask them the amount you have traded they should say three fips or a levy and a fip. The most simple way of calling money that can be I think. The neighbors are very sociable and friendly or those that I have become acquainted with and make me think of our folks in Johnstown often. We live in a as pleasant part of the city as there is nearly on the bank of the river or in plain sight of it which is quite a sight I should think when the water is high it is something so now we are about one hundred rods from the capitol which is a splendid building. I have not visited it yet the rest of our family have. Margret goes once a week for a book the state library is kept there and everyone has the privilege of drawing books free. I think we shall not want books now. We go to market twice a week. Wednesday and Saturdays. The market men come to the city in the morning between two and three o'clock (from the country) and meet in the market to get their things ready for sale market hours from five to eight. The laidies all go to market those that have servants take them along to carry the Basket home those that have none carry it them selves it looks like a mess of Paddies. I have not been to market yet Geoff does our marketing and wont let me go with him Margy and Father went the first market morning after we came here Margaret said she never saw such a sight in her life they have every thing to sell even to peach meats strung on a string for two cents a yard the last thing I ever thought of. We have to buy everything by the quart and peck and half peck if you ask a market man for a bushel of potatoes he would say which a whole bushel I cant let you have it But if you ask for four pecks he will measure it out to you without saying a word for what they say a word for what they say which…"
