Description
New York: np. first edition. Fine. LARGE, LIMITED VINTAGE SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPH OF BASQUIAT FROM 1984. ONE OF ONLY THREE VINTAGE PRINTS PRODUCED OF AN ICONIC BASQUIAT PORTRAIT. Trained under Richard Avedon, the photographer Richard Corman has been one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the last thirty years. Rolling Stone refers to his photographs as "iconic" and documentarian Ken Burns says Corman's versatile body of work is an "artistic vision dedicated to the highest aspirations of human endeavor... the photographs record in big moments and small, among the famous and ordinary, the gifted and challenged, larger truths relevant to all of us." Corman's 1984 photo session with the 23-year old Jean-Michel Basquiat at Basquiat's Great Jones St. studio produced wonderfully evocative images of the now legendary artist. As Corman explains: "In 1984, I was asked to photograph Jean Michel Basquiat for L'Uomo Vogue. When I walked into the artist's loft I was immediately engulfed by a wave of creative confusion. The room was a swirl of people, paint, canvas, color, and smoke. Off in the corner was Basquiat, submerged and almost invisible. "I tried to be as prepared as possible for my shoot, but until I had walked into his studio, I was really entering the unknown. His space was packed with people - Jean-Michel attracted people for all kinds of reasons. He was charismatic, beautiful, a bit haunting and a genius in his own right. There was just a wonderfully crazy energy of smoke and people and music and painting. It was messy and cool in the best way. I decided to kind of isolate him in the photos from the chaos. For me, that's what makes these pictures so interesting - the focus is on him, instead of the mad energy surrounding him. "All I had with me was a twin lens Rolleiflex camera, one strobe, and a 4-foot-wide grey seamless paper. I hung it up, had him stand in front of it, and began taking pictures. I would say he was comfortable, uncomfortable, angry, curious, and intense. He just created his own space and energy, and I followed it... His hands, eyes, and body language were so expressive, and he revealed so much through his luminous presence. "For me, as a young photographer, and even 30 years later, I'm always looking to find someone's story behind their eyes, and in his own way, Jean-Michel shared that with me. It was kind of magical, even though I didn't know what I had at the time. I didn't know who I was photographing, other than someone with a unique soul and spirit. I felt how multi-layered he was. His presence was quiet yet mesmerizing." The vintage photographs from this photoshoot are exceedingly scarce. Corman printed "a few" of his favorites for his portfolio at the time, including three of this image. Signed, dated, and numbered ("1/3") by Corman on the verso. New York: 1984. Size: Image = 16x16 inches; framed 23x25 inches. In stunning archival, hand-painted frame with museum plexi-glass. Fine condition.

Description
[Lyon: Claude Nourry, 1524. Small 8vo (131 x 93 mm).  [16] leaves. Collation: A-B8 (A1r title, A1v blank, A2r text, B8r explicit, Explicit iste liber gemmis qui charior extat, B8v blank). Title in two lines (Cura clericalis in very large type / Lege relege in the larger of the two text types), title woodcut of a scribe at his pulpit (54 x 70 mm., break in left border); the cut worn or poorly printed. Rounded French gothic types in two sizes. Text type G76, 27 lines and headline. One 5-line white on black floral initial. (Printing flaw on B4v obscuring a couple of letters; traces of adhesion on same page opening, else in fine condition). 19th-century dark blue morocco, by Cuzin, sides and spine blind-paneled with gilt fleurons, spine lettered in gilt, turn-ins gilt, gilt edges, ribbon marker. Provenance: Fernand Gaulthier, armorial bookplate.*** A rare Lyonese edition of a popular pocket guidebook for priests. A succinct survey of every aspect of the priesthood, the text opens with the meaning of sacerdos (priest), a definition of the job: the care and salvation of human souls, and the requirements for fulfilling this office: basic literacy and the ability to express oneself correctly. From abstract concepts to practical applications, the fundamental tenets of the Christian Church are methodically reviewed: the articles of faith, seven deadly sins, cardinal and theological virtues, three keys of the church, three parts of penitence, etc., as are the different kinds of sacraments, the materials used for them and their meanings, and the various clerical offices. The telegraphically short entries (with abundant use, in this small format edition, of abbreviations) permitted the inclusion of a vast amount of indispensable knowledge for the practicing priest. The last third of the text is devoted to an equally condensed introduction to the Computus (with headline Abbreviatio compoti), the all-important calculation of time based on the yearly date of Easter; it includes mnemonic verses and syllables. “The Cura clericalis, reflecting the received wisdom on the subject, defined four rules for the priest. He was to be a celebrant of Masses, and so needed to understand the basic texts and to be able to pronounce the Latin grammatically and clearly. He must be a minister of the other sacraments, and so needed to know what and how many they were, to grasp the essential matter of the sacrament and be able to distinguish it from the peripheral features, and to know the proper mode of administration. He was to be a confessor, and so must above all be able to distinguish venial from deadly sin ... Finally, he was to be a ‘plebis doctor’, the teacher of his people, able to instruct them in the articles of faith and the other precepts of God” (E. Duffy, The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England 1400–1580 [New Haven, 2005], p. 57). Dozens of editions are recorded, most surviving in one or two copies, and some with no currently known locations. ISTC records nine incunable editions, printed from ca. 1492-4 to 1500, all but one undated, of which 8 from Germany and one printed in Paris. In the next century the earliest editions appeared in the northern Rhine and France, and later in England and Italy. Pettegree and Walsby list 30 editions printed in France from ca. 1511 to 1580 (French Books III & IV: Books Published in France Before 1601 in Latin and Languages Other Than French [2011], 637490-63778).  The anonymous printer of this edition, of which one other copy is known (Besançon Municipal Library), was Claude Nourry, as recently identified by Dr. Helwi Blom, whom we thank for her kind assistance. Much of Nourry’s output was published without his name, and he printed many editions without the place or date of printing. He issued another edition, with full colophon, in 1524 (Baudrier 12, 129; Gültlingen 1, 86: 113; USTC 130305), but no present locations for that edition are known. The title woodblock was used in other Nourry editions, including his 1523 Beroaldo, Carmen lugubre de dominicae Passionis die (USTC 130303), and the initial C on A2r appeared in editions from 1520. Not in Baudrier, Gültlingen, or USTC.

Description
Ithaca, (NY): Moosewood; [printed by Glad Day Press], 1974. Comb-bound quarto (28 x 22 cm.), 79 pages. Illustrated. Second Printing of the original self-published edition of this classic of counterculture cooking. The Moosewood Cookbook was published in a trade edition by Ten Speed Press in 1977 with significant expansion and revisions from these earlier works and went on to become one of the bestselling cookbooks of all time. The restaurant opened in 1973, originally as a worker's collective, and has been honored as one of the thirteen most influential restaurants of the 20th century by Bon Appetit and received a James Beard Foundation "American Classic" award. This earlier edition was compiled by and credited to the collective, with Mollie Katzen – who would go on to be credited as the author of the trade edition – given credit here for "design, editing, handwriting, pen and ink illustrations". It is the first to contain illustrations, including the iconic moose, and is distinct in a number of ways from the first printing, notably in that the leaves are printed one side only, and that the copyright notice states, "Copyright 1974, Moosewood collective". Tiny spot to front panel of the decorated wrapper; publisher's dark brown plastic comb binding is complete. The original self-published issues are very scarce, doubly so in this condition.

Description
Little Rock: Central Printing Company, 1924. Good.. 291pp., plus thirty-one photographic portrait plates. Publisher's green cloth with titles stamped in black. Considerable wear and staining to boards, edges worn. Hinges partially separated but holding by mull cloth. Latter portion of text dampstained. A well-worn copy of a rather scarce book. An uncommon work detailing the history, activities, and prominent early members of the Mosaic Templars of America. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, the Mosaic Templars was "an African-American fraternal organization offering mutual aid to the Black community, founded in Little Rock (Pulaski County) in 1882 and incorporated in 1883 by two former slaves, John Edward Bush and Chester W. Keatts. Taking its name from the biblical character of Moses, the organization offered illness, death, and burial insurance to African Americans at a time when white insurers refused to treat Black customers equally. The name metaphorically linked the organization’s services to African Americans and the oppressive conditions of the Jim Crow South to Moses’s leadership during the Israelites' Exodus from slavery in Egypt and into the Promised Land. At its peak in the 1920s, the organization had an estimated membership of over 100,000 members and had chapters in twenty-six states, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. Headquartered in Little Rock throughout its existence, the MTA exemplified a successful black-owned business enterprise." The photographic portrait plates picture the founders J.E. Bush and C.W. Keatts, the editors of the current work A.E. Bush and P.L. Dorman, as well as about forty additional members of the organization, including several women who worked in both local chapters and for the national organization, often printed in pairs and with accompanying biographical details. The editors were themselves notable members of the Mosaic Templars; Aldridge E. Bush was the son of the co-founder, John E. Bush; Percy L. Dorman was a field agent for the Arkansas Council of Defense during the First World War. OCLC records nine physical institutional copies, at Central Arkansas, Auburn-Montgomery, Arkansas-Mullins, U.C. North Regional Library, Howard, Harvard, Kansas City Public, Louisville Public, and New York Public. Not in Blockson or the Library Company's Afro-Americana Collection. Work, p.414.
