Woodcut printer's marks on title and last leaf, two historiated woodcut initials. Morato: [28] ff. Woodcut device on title & last leaf (large cut of an angel leading a child by the hand). Provenance: J. Hunter, 1813, inscription & price note; Robert Samuel Turner (1818-1887), bookplate (sales June & Nov. 1888); George Dunn (1865-1912), letterpress bookplate (sales Sotheby's 1913-1915); the Luccan-New York bookseller Joseph Martini (signed collation note, accession no. 46 & various bibliographical pencil notes on flyleaves and on verso of second title (some with red underlining).(signed collation note, accession no. 46 & various bibliographical pencil notes on flyleaves and on verso of second title (some with red underlining).*** 1) First Edition. The poet Bentivoglio was educated at the court of his uncle Alfonso I d'Este. A friend of Ariosto and a talented musician, his talents lay rather in reflexion and observation than in action, and he viewed the diplomatic charges forced upon him as onerous and a distraction from his literary pursuits. This collection of six satires, each to a different dedicatee, and several other poems, all written around 1530, is considered his most accomplished work. The first satire mocks older men who fall in love and make a woman the center of their lives. The second is a bitter look at war, specifically atrocities committed by the Spanish during the siege of Florence in 1529. The third satire, dedicated to the well-known physician Antonio Musa, mocks the ignorance of those who declare themselves doctors having read neither Aristotle, Plato, Avicenna or Galen, but only "two recipes and Donato's writing rules" (due recette et le regole a pena di Donato, f. 7r), and advises the ailing to let nature run its course or to abide by the tried and true remedies of their forebears. In Satire IV Bentivoglio turns a withering gaze on avarice and counsels moderation of one's material and emotional desires. Satire VI, dedicated to his brother, provides a detailed autobiographical picture of the daily life of a Ferrarese gentleman of leisure, describing a balanced life of study, physical exercise and social diversion; and the final satire returns to the theme of the golden mean. The other pieces include an 8-page poem in praise of cheese (Del Formaggio), "il primo nutrimento humano," without which no meal is complete. As India has its armed elephants, so beautiful Lombardy has its astounding cheeses (types, smells and savors are enumerated), and "certo'l formaggio è cibo celeste." Bound second is Morato's popular dictionary or concordance of rhymes in Dante and Petrarch, the first rhyming dictionary in Italian (first ed. Venice 1529). This edition is scarce (it is not to be confused with another Venice 1546 edition published by the brothers da Sabbio). The copy passed through several distinguished collections. Robert Samuel Turner was "an extremely refined collector of the Beckford type, a great connoisseur of French, Italian and Spanish books" (de Ricci, English Collectors, 164). George Dunn, of Wooley Hall, Maidenhead, "had a most carefully selected series" of early printed books (ibid., 183), and was one of the first bibliophiles to pay attention to early bindings. Of the great Giuseppe Martini, bookseller, scholar and collector of Italian literature, much has been written (and he was the subject of a colloquium held in Lucca in 2014). His habit of writing notes and comments (in pencil) in the books that passed through his hands makes his books instantly recognizable. 1) EDIT-16 CNCE 5340; Bongi, Giolito 135; BM/STC Italian 84. Cf. Description
07/05/1866. Moses Sherwood Stuyvesant was in the Class of 1860. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Cumberland as aide to Commodore George J. Pendergrast, the Cumberland being his flagship. When war erupted the vessel went to Norfolk, Virginia. While there, the Navy Yard was partly destroyed and abandoned, and the Cumberland was placed on blockade duty, and took part in the capture of Forts Hatteras and Clark. Writing of this last, Stuyvesant calls attention to the fact that ""it was probably the last fight in which a ship was handled under sail. All other vessels present were steamships…” On March 8, 1862, the old frigate Cumberland was sunk by the powerful guns of the ironclad Merrimac. This was a historic event and saw an epic clash between old and new technology. Stuyvesant reportedly refused to let the flag come down: ""No, the ship will sink in fifteen minutes, and she will look a d-d sight better with her flag up."" In this battle he was wounded in the arm and commanded two crews of survivors who manned land guns during the next day's battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac. He later wrote a famous paper describing the sinking of the Cumberland. In 1862, he was a Lieutenant with the U.S. Steam Sloop Housatonic. In early 1864, the Housatonic, was outside Charleston when the CSS submarine Hunley paddled out and sent her to the bottom. He was then assigned to the Monitor Weehawken. The Weehawken sank at her anchors while off Charleston, Stuyvesant being the last to leave her. His next duty was on the U.S. Steam Frigate Minnesota, then in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and he was with her in both attacks on Fort Fisher in December 1864 and January 1865.In 1866, he was assigned to the double turreted U.S. Steamer Miantonomah, and, as her Commander, then having the rank of Lieutenant Commander, he made with her the memorable cruise across the Atlantic and through the North Sea, the Baltic and then through the Mediterranean, in 1866 and 1867. This was part of a visit to Russia ordered by Congress. This is Stuyvesant’s promotion as Lieutenant Commander, signed by President Andrew Johnson. Document signed, with engravings of Neptune, flags, an eagle, and the sea and ships, Washington, May 7, 1866. “Reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities of Moses S. Stuyvesant, I have nominated, and with the advice and consent of the Senate, do appoint him a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, from the 11th day of April 1866.” This is the rank he held when he made his famed trip across the Atlantic in 1866.It is unusual to find a military appointment to such a high rank. We obtained this from the Stuyvesant descendants, and it has never before been offered for sale.

Description
New York, 2008. Near fine.. A rich series of collages and assemblages with thoroughly referential pop-art sensibilities. The artist's identity is unknown: aside from a recurring signature ("T" followed by a five-pointed star), the only relevant information is the dedication: "N.Y. 3/20/08 / This Book / Is / Dedicated / To / My Son / Rocky / He Has Been The / Only True Inspira / tion For Me.. / I Love You!! / Forever / Tiziana [?]." The untitled book's collages and three-dimensional assemblages use a wide variety of materials (plastic, paint, printed transparency, markers, toys), and stylistically evoke a kind of lowbrow pop art, or even pop-punk, with a particular emphasis on fashion design (images of T-shirts, purses, and jeans abound). Recurring symbols include skulls, guns, movie/concert posters, album covers, and icons borrowed from other pop artists, including Richard Prince's bunny skull and Warhol's banana. The book's style brings to mind a kind of retro fashion boutique, though Tiziana's references are so motley and obscure that they would resist such easy marketing; for example, a poster for the film ROLLERBALL starring James Caan and several little-known comic book heroes are also included. The book belies a certain '80s nostalgia -- be it for punk (Misfits, Tuxedomoon) or film (a collaged purse bearing the likeness of Kurt Russell from ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK) -- and seems to have been designed by someone with a keen interest in fashion design, due to the multiplicity of clothing depicted. Altogether, an ornate, elaborate, and consistently surprising outsider book. Hardcover. Quarto. Spiral-bound boards. (24) leaves of black cardstock, plus covers. All surfaces covered with two- and three-dimensional elements. Appears complete. Traces of dust/rubbing to covers, else clean and unmarred inside and out.

Description
1923 1923. 10" x 8" Type 1 black and white photo. Photo of New York Giants after winning NL pennant, featuring future Hall of Famers Casey Stengel, Hack Wilson, Travis Jackson, Dave Bancroft, Frankie Frisch, George Kelly and manager John McGraw. Near fine, with light surface damage to top right, light rippling, and some writing in orange to lower margin. Overall, an excellent vintage photo featuring many HOFers. In 1923, the New York Giants captured the National League pennant, but would go on to lose in the World Series to the New York Yankees, four games to two. The team featured a young Casey Stengel, who would go on to become the legendary and charismatic manager of the New York Yankees, leading them to seven World Series titles in twelve years (1949 - 1960). Stengel was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. Stengel received important mentorship from John McGraw, who managed the New York Giants for thirty years (1902-1932) and guided the Giants to three World Series titles (1905, 1921, 1922). Dave Bancroft and Travis Jackson, both elite shortstops, were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971 and 1982 respectively. . Photograph.
